NM - 10-month old baby ET safe after 5yo child injured, mother and friend murdered, suspect in maroon Honda, Clovis, 3 May 2024 *suspect in custody*

I'm glad though but what are the chances? He must have been spotted on camera with his license plate. Or someone in Texas dropped a dime when he returned with a baby.
Abilene Police spokesman said he had no ties to Abilene, yet Narcotics Agents located him at a home in Abilene. If you are spotted and your plate is run, they get the registered owner's info. If he was the RO, and he had no ties to Abilene, how did they come to know about this home in Abilene? It was a tip from the FBI. So the plate thing is unlikely, but the dropping a dime idea is possible.

There's a lot more to this story than his sad girlfriend wanting to raise a child, something probably more sinister.

No KNOWN ties to Abilene, anyway.

Yeah, I think someone saw this black guy with a Hispanic baby that met the description in the Amber Alert, and called the police, possibly knowing that they were putting themselves and a lot of other people at risk.

Clovis Deputy Police Chief Trevor Thron said the suspect was located “though investigative leads, through witness statements, videos and cell phone records, including some GPS investigation as well.”
(…)
Tomlin said Collins was being held in Abilene on charges of aggravated robbery and assault on a peace officer with other charges pending. It wasn’t clear if the robbery and assault were related to the Clovis slayings.

That is amazing police work being able to track him down so quickly. I wonder if something was captured on the victims phone before they were shot? Or could the suspect have been at the Walmart and followed them to the park? I’m also curious how the robbery charges fit, if they are related to the dog sales or if that occurred separately in Abilene. MOO

I have to wonder about who he was staying with...

It also sounds as though the robbery took place in Abilene. MOO

From the article:

“Officers located a home in North Abilene where the suspect was reportedly staying,” Tomlin said. “At 4:30 a.m. on Monday, May 6, narcotic agents set up surveillance on the home, and the subject was eventually taken into custody without incident.”

During a search of the minivan registered to Samantha, investigators found a receipt to Dollar Tree with a time stamp of 2:48 p.m. on May 3. Investigators obtained video from the store. On the video, Samantha and Taryn were seen, along with the children.

Phone records for Samantha’s phone showed it to be at the Twin Cronnies restaurant around 2:15 p.m. The phone also showed to be at the park around 2:59 p.m.

Investigators obtained search warrants for cell phone providers to obtain any phone numbers near the area of Ned Houk Park at the time of the incident.

During the search of the numbers, a phone number registered to Alek Collins was located to be at the park around the same times as the incident. The phone also appeared to be near the area of Dollar Tree at the same time as the women and children.

Investigators also obtained video surveillance from a nearby McDonalds that showed a maroon Honda in the drive through lane around 2:44 p.m. on May 3. The car appeared to have a missing sideview mirror cover on the passenger side of the car.

Investigators learned the car was registered to a person in Texas and had been rented out on the Turo app. The car had been rented on April 21 and was supposed to be returned on April 23.

The person who had rented the car was identified as Alek Collins.

The car’s GPS monitoring system showed the vehicle to be located in Clovis at the date and time of the incident.

Perhaps he thought he was entitled to take one?

Scary dude. Horrifying to think of him tending to that baby.

I'm assuming McDonalds and the dollar store are nearby to each. Close enough for him to see them and decide he wants that baby? Follows them to the park.

It's just so frightening to think that you can be living your life, doing nothing out of the ordinary when evil walks in.

From page 3:

The responding officer reported that the 5-year-old was bleeding from her head, had one boot on, and dried dirt and blood on her mouth. When other units responded, he advised them he believed a possible wreck had occurred due to seeing the maroon vehicle part near the child. When EMS lifted her shirt, the officer observed scrapes and scratches.

From page 4, they later learned that the 5-year-old sustained a gunshot wound to her head. As well as a gunshot wound, Samantha also appeared to have multiple scrapes and scratches on her body. The stroller was found pushed up against the van, appeared to have been damaged, and also appeared to have red paint transfer on the bottom of the stroller.

There is no mention of damage to the van. Did he run them over? :(

God only knows what he did to them, the details of the scene don’t fully tell the story. Im horrified to think how frightened they all must have been.

I wonder if he really does have a daughter? How long hes been mentally ill and was he under some sort of treatment? How long was he committed back in October?

I was able to find him in a civil record in Fort Bend County. He does have siblings and parents.

Did LE confirm that in addition to Collins having no ties/being unknown to any the victims that he also had no ties/was unknown to the fathers of the 5 year old & 10 month old too? I'm assuming no ties to them either just based on that reported crazy call Collins made to the FBI before all of this, but just wanted to be sure/confirm.

WHAT?! They didn't investigate his claim of kidnapping a woman and her son. Is this going to be the tip of a large iceberg?
