MINEOLA, N.Y. — The discovery of human remains found just feet from a suburban New York seashore stirred suspicions Wednesday that another victim of a suspected serial killer may have been located, although a detective insisted there is no evidence so far linking it to the earlier unsolved homicides.

Cops: Manorville man charged in two cold case murders
by Grant Parpan
07/22/2014 12:20 AM

A 48-year-old Manorville man was arrested Monday in connection with a pair of cold case murders from the 1990s, Suffolk County Police announced late Monday night.

John Bittrolff of Silas Carter Road, in Brookhaven Town, is accused of killing two women and dumping their bodies in wooded areas in East Patchogue and Shirley. Mr. Bittrolff, who was charged with two counts of second-degree murder, was connected to the crimes through DNA evidence, police said.

On Nov. 2, 1993, Rita Tangredi, 31, was found nude in a wooded area off of Esplanade Drive in East Patchogue. Ms. Tangredi, who was also identified as Rita Tangredi-Beinlich and whose address was unknown at the time of her death, was beaten and strangled to death, police said.

On Jan. 30, 1994, the body of Colleen McNamee, 20, who was living on Hyacinth Lane in Holbrook, was found dead in the woods near Express Drive South, near the William Floyd Parkway in Shirley. Ms. McNamee was also found nude, beaten and strangled to death, police said.

Prosecutors said in court their evidence is extremely strong and they have DNA evidence from a single male source from both crime scenes. In addition, prosecutors say DNA has been confirmed to be Bittrolff.

A defense attorney described Bittrolff as a family man, married with a wife and two children.

Police tell News 12 Long Island say there is no evidence right now between the two murders and the bodies found at Gilgo Beach.
However, it remains unseen if six other bodies found in the Manorville area between 2000 and 2012 are connected.

As News 12 has reported, the bodies of three men and three women were found scattered throughout Manorville. Some were naked and partially dismembered.

The judge has ordered Bittrolff to be held without bail. The carpenter and married father of two said nothing and showed no emotion at his arraignment Tuesday at First District Court in Central Islip.

Officials alleged that Bittrolff left the nude bodies “uniquely positioned,” and he is also being investigated in a third cold case of a woman found posed in a similar way.

Long Island Murder Suspect May Be Linked to Three Deaths, Say Officials
By Tom Winter
First published July 22nd 2014, 2:35 pm

The man arrested Monday for killing two women on New York’s Long Island 20 years ago may also be linked to a third unsolved murder, officials said Tuesday.

John Bittrolff, 48, has been charged with killing two women and dumping their bodies in Manorville, N.Y. in 1993 and 1994 after enhanced DNA techniques allegedly linked him to the murders. Once he was in custody and drank from a cup, officials say they pulled more DNA from the cup and matched it to the crime scene.

[...]

Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota said that the condition of the body and the position in which it was found make Bittrolff a suspect, as does an item of clothing that was missing from all three bodies. Spota would not specific which item of clothing was missing.

Wood chips bolster case against Long Island man accused in 20-year-old murders: prosecutors

Defendant John Bittrolff’s semen, as well as the chips, were found on victims Rita Tangredi and Colleen McNamee, said Suffolk County assistant district attorney Robert Biancavilla, who also noted, ‘Mr. Bittrolff has been a carpenter his whole adult life.'

A Long Island carpenter charged with strangling two prostitutes more than 20 years ago was tied to the grisly cold case crimes by DNA — and wood chips.

“Wood chips were found on both of the victims,” Suffolk County assistant district attorney Robert Biancavilla said while accused double-murderer John Bittrolff shook his head defiantly. “And Mr. Bittrolff has been a carpenter his whole adult life.”

Also, Biancavilla said, the semen found on Rita Tangredi and Colleen McNamee were a match to Bittrolff.

[...]

Suffolk County DA Thomas Spota said after the hearing that Bittrolff was also a suspect in another unsolved murder — that of 28-year-old Sandra Costilla of Queens.

[...]

“Wood chips were found on or near both of the Tangredi and McNamee victims also were found at the scene of the Sandra Costilla crime scene," he said.
