Netherlands crime journalist Peter R. de Vries shot in Amsterdam | DW | 06.07.2021
''Rutte's Justice Minsiter Ferd Grapperhaus spoke of a "black day," both for those close to de Vries and for freedom of the press.

Police said that three people had been arrested, including the suspected shooter, but gave no details on the possible reasons for the attack.''

''Unverified footage shared on social media showed de Vries lying on his back with blood on his face; according to witnesses quoted by public broadcaster NOS, he was shot up to five times, once in the head.

On a hit list
In 2019, de Vries wrote on Twitter that he had been informed by police and justice officials that he was on the hit list of a fugitive criminal.

From 1995 to 2012, he hosted a highly popular Dutch television program on crime that covered high-profile cases.

He is also known for his investigative work following the 1983 kidnapping of beer magnate Freddy Heineken. A novel he later wrote pertaining to that case was adapted for screen into the 2014 film "Kidnapping Freddy Heineken" starring Anthony Hopkins.

He won an international Emmy Award in 2008 for a television show he made about the disappearance of US teenager Natalee Holloway on the Caribbean island of Aruba in 2005.''

Dutch crime reporter Peter R. de Vries fighting for his life after shooting
''Dutch police said in a statement Wednesday that two suspects -- a 35-year-old Polish national living in Maurik and a 21-year-old man living in Rotterdam -- are in custody in relation to the shooting. The statement said the two would be arraigned on Friday.''
''The police statement also said property searches were conducted overnight in Tiel, Maurik and Rotterdam where "various data carriers and ammunition were seized there." Police added that an 18-year-old local resident who was initially arrested has "since been released and is no longer considered a suspect."

Authorities responded to reports of a shooting on Lange Leidsedwarsstraat, a street near popular Leidseplein square on Tuesday evening, where de Vries was found and "immediately rushed to hospital," according to an earlier police statement.

Dutch broadcaster RTL said de Vries had just left its studio in downtown Amsterdam when one of five shots hit him in the head.''

Looks interesting, movie based on PRdV's book about the case.

Dutch Celebrity Crime Reporter Peter R. de Vries Shot on Amsterdam Street

Local police said in a statement, “Peter R. de Vries was shot down in Lange Leidsedwarsstraat.” De Vries, 64, had visited broadcaster RTL’s television studio that evening and appeared on a talk show. He is now in “serious condition,” police said, and Amsterdam’s mayor said he was “fighting for his life.”
The alleged shooter and two others have been arrested. Authorities are on the hunt for another suspect identified in CCTV footage.

''Five gunshots blasted like fireworks on a sunny evening, just behind Amsterdam’s busy Leidseplein. To the horror of the Netherlands, a cold-blooded shooting has left prominent Dutch crime journalist Peter R de Vries fighting for his life in hospital.

Everyone from European leaders to the Dutch king Willem-Alexander and Amsterdam mayor Femke Halsema have expressed their shock at the ambush of “national hero” De Vries as he walked back to his car on Tuesday after recording a chatshow, on a busy street in broad daylight.

Within hours, the Dutch police arrested two men on the A4 motorway and are holding a 21-year-old from Rotterdam and a 35-year-old Polish national. The younger man has been named in Dutch media as rapper Delano G, the Polish man as Kamil Pawel E.

But many are speculating whether it is coincidence that De Vries, who made his name reporting on the kidnap of brewing magnate Freddy Heineken in the 1980s, has recently been involved in a high-profile gangland drug and murder court case, known as the Marengo trial.''

“The Netherlands is a very egalitarian society but in some neighbourhoods and social classes if you’re not good at football, your learning isn’t up to par and you’re not good at music, your chances of becoming a millionaire are very slim. A driving factor that brings people into crime is socio-economics.''

Dutch rapper 'shot crime journalist 5 times' leaving him critical
9 Jul 2021
''A DUTCH rapper allegedly shot a crime journalist five times, leaving the justice campaigner fighting for his life.

Delano Geerman - known as "Slick" or "Demper" - could be charged with the shooting of Peter R. de Vries that happened in Amsterdam at about 7.30pm on Tuesday.

''The 21-year-old rapper was stopped in a car on a motorway and the driver, named locally as Kamiel Egiert, 35, was also arrested, The Times reports.

A third suspect had also been arrested, but has since been released, according to Al Jazeera.

This evening, while investigations are ongoing, police raided the rapper's house in the town of Tiel.

Geerman - who has a YouTube channel accused of glorifying violence - is said to have a criminal record.

The car's driver, Egiert, has an outstanding European arrest warrant for theft and robberies which was previously issued by Poland.

Officers are allegedly investigating the men's links to Ridouan Taghi, a Moroccan-Dutch involved in organised crime.

According to police, Taghi made death threats against De Vries in 2019 after the journalist supported the main witness against him.''

The Dutch investigative journalist Peter R, de Vries has died in hospital in Amsterdam from injuries sustained when he was shot in the street nine days ago.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.

We are going to miss you Peter. There are other Dutch crime journalists, but nobody compared to you. You were such a wonderful example for all of us. Fighting for justice and against injustice. There are so many (cold) cases you worked on and rescued quite a couple of people from miscarriages of justice...with your never lasting energy and bravery. The list is so long and to long to mention. Also you were a confidant to so many families in pain with murdered and missing children or people who needed somehow your protection. Although you could sometimes be a little to smart, snippy, arrogant and "media horny" I've always admired you for who you are and where you stood for. You will always be remembered by me. I hope you are free now....and we all know you never ever bended your knee. Respect!!!

What a shame. I remember him from the Natalee Holloway case. I also stumbled across the Freddy Heineken movie and watched it, finding out later he was involved in it. Worth a watch.

A brave man, a great journalist, may he rest in peace.

Very glad to see arrests so soon.

‘Did it from the heart’: Netherlands mourns after journalist dies
“Peter fought to the end, but was unable to win the battle,” his relatives said in a statement. “Peter lived by the belief: ‘On bended knee is no way to be free.’ We’re inexpressibly proud of him and at the same time inconsolable.”

‘Afraid of nothing and no one’
The crime journalist was well known in the Netherlands for his passion for unsolved crimes and his unconditional support for the families of loved ones whose murder cases or disappearances were never unravelled.

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte said the news touched him deeply.

“Peter R de Vries was always dedicated, tenacious, afraid of nothing and no one. Always seeking the truth and standing up for justice. And, therefore, it’s all the more dramatic that he himself has now become the victim of a great injustice.”

''During his life, Peter R de Vries investigated more than 500 murders and played a pivotal role in the solving of various cold cases.

He was known to be of huge support to the next of kin of people whose disappearances or murder cases had never been solved. Aside from being a crime journalist, he also fought for the release of people who he believed were imprisoned for crimes they never committed.

According to Jan Struijs, chairman of the Dutch Police Association, de Vries played an influential role in improving the work of the police. “It’s partly thanks to him that we now have an old case and cold case team in every police unit in the country,” he said.

‘Golden tip’

One of the cold cases de Vries was trying to solve was the disappearance of Tanja Groen, a student who has been missing since 1993.''

Inside, people place flowers near the white box, with red roses on it and sometimes cards. The coffin is surrounded by flowers, from among others the family of Tanja Groen, RTL Boulevard, the family of Nicky Verstappen and the law firm of son Royce de Vries. ,,That coffin, those roses. All those photos and a portrait of him. Really impressive”, says one visitor.

Quiet pop music plays in the background, including De Vries' favorite song A Whiter Shade Of Pale by Procol Harum. Some people lay down a rose. Visibly impressed, people cross, give a kiss or simply stand still and look at the bier and the flowers.

Next to the coffin hangs a signed shirt of his favorite football club Ajax. The football shirt, with the scribble of Ajax player Jari Litmanen, was intended for Nicky Verstappen's grave, but arrived too late. De Vries kept it in his office as a reminder that the case had to be solved.

Personal connection
Some visitors had a personal connection with him, such as a mother and daughter who approached De Vries for advice a few years ago after becoming a victim of a crime. That contact gave them a completely different picture of him.

"I always thought his ego was so big that you could hardly see past it," says the mother, who wishes to remain anonymous. ,,But when we asked him for advice, I got to know his other side. That he always responded to our messages within a few minutes. It happened that we were on the phone with him for half an hour. He did that selflessly. There was no bill. That shows how incredibly involved he was. He wanted to help from his heart.”

39-year-old Aafie Kloosterman is also present at Carré . Kloosterman was the best friend of Marianne Vaatstra, who was murdered in 1999. De Vries played a major role in solving the murder. The couple comes from De Westereen, in Friesland: "Peter has traveled thousands of kilometers for us, so we can also cover these kilometers," said Kloosterman. ,,He has meant a lot to us, has committed himself for years. That man is gold. We want to show respect now.”

‘Obviously very chilling’: Peter R. de Vries killing shows the danger of Dutch crime reporting - Committee to Protect Journalists
''In the wake of de Vries killing, threats to journalism have continued. RTL Boulevard cancelled its July 10 and 11 broadcasts, after authorities warned of a planned attack on the program’s Amsterdam studio. Recording of the show resumed on July 12 from an alternate location, news reports said.

Known for his aggressive and confrontational reporting style, de Vries revealed crucial information in a number of murder and organized crime cases.''

''Regardless, the effect his murder has on Dutch journalism is obviously very chilling. It fits in a trend of increasing violence against reporters. This heavy and seemingly unrestricted form of violence threatens all aspects of the justice state; we’ve seen it with the murder of a lawyer and now again with the attack on de Vries. This is why we are deeply concerned that these groups, much like the Italian mafia, are willing to settle scores outside their own ranks.''

''Bruning: We need to be aware of how serious this is. We can’t underestimate the significance of this attack. In the days after the attack, you could see how crime reporters reflected on their own situation and realized that these people will not only threaten, but actually act on those threats, even in a busy street in broad daylight. It means they are also willing to walk into studios and editorial offices. Their targets are primarily crime reporters, but there’s also a secondary group, the people who work with those reporters in talk shows like RTL Boulevard, who feel the danger. Safety of journalists in the broadest sense of the word must be the absolute priority of everyone.''

Very shocking, the concern for safety when doing your job, fighting for justice and get the word out.
It's very troubling how far criminals go to silence, those who try to make the world better, never give up in the search for answers.
We should never forget and keep their spirits alive.
Saw that Signi search dogs and the team also payed their respect to Peter R. De Vries.
