NC Wadesboro, Wht Fem, UP114419, 20-40, May 2022 (seen when alive)

Another recent article, this time with a retouched picture. Here it is.
I hadn’t realized the clothes found with the Wadesboro Doe’s remains weren’t necessarily the same as the clothing on the woman in the photo:
The only confirmed evidence found was a bra, black in color, and material that may be consistent with a pair of leggings.

Though I’m not necessarily trusting of this article…
Eager to allay public concerns, Detective Tice confirms the “Department is not waiting on confirmation the remains are Amber [Rae Johnston]. We are pursuing leads in Winston Salem.”
How does that allay public concerns?
Detective Tice confirms that Johnston has not been ruled out and the department is working in conjunction with investigators from Arizona, as well as other relevant jurisdictions.
If she hasn’t been ruled out, why aren’t they attempting to and thus waiting on confirmation? And why did the detective on Amber’s case say “DNA takes time”?

At a guess, probably because the remains are old enough that specialized techniques for recovering DNA are required. I've read that most of the labs doing that work are backed up due to heavy demand.

Is North Carolina one of the states that requires all lab work to be done through the state laboratories?

This still doesn’t make sense to me.

If the problem was DNA extraction, why wouldn’t the detective clarify that there is currently nothing to match Amber to? If the problem was a backlog, why would the detective say that they aren’t waiting on anything?

The detective’s statements just make no sense to me, though I’m not sure if that is because of the detective or because of the article author.

I mean, yes, nothing that detective says is clear, and the reporter didn't do anything to improve it, so I wouldn't read too much into what might or might not have been said. Plus they haven't been all that forthcoming at any point, so they aren't likely to start now, unfortunately.

I thought that the "not waiting on anything" quote meant that they weren't waiting until the DNA results came in to start the investigation, they were investigating anyway. Which would be a good thing.

Othram has done some cases that were more recent, even Does found in 2023. So it's not too early, but I think they'll want to exhaust other avenues first like traditional DNA comparison and public appeal.
Forensic genetic genealogy should be used as soon as they know there is no match in CODIS, which is nearly always the case for UHRs. Waiting just delays answers (and sometimes justice) for the families.

NamUs has what I believe are the coordinates of the location of the body. I wonder where the trail cam was and from which way she came. The images show her going in a loop.
Also, does the trail cam record videos or just take snapshots?

When I zoom in to the area that looks like a clearing, near culpepper creek, I see what I see to possibly be a deer feeding stand?
There might be a couple a others a little passed the creek?

I always assumed the structure this Doe was seen walking past on camera was a deer feeding trough.

There are many reasons people feed deer, but one of the primary reasons is so they can monitor the local population and keep track of what bucks (male deer) are where. Game wardens and hunters do this. My grandpa was a hunter a long time ago but still kept feeding the deer on his property because he liked seeing them. He had a feeder very similar to the one seen on the trail cam.

Couple of thoughts here...as mentioned she's got the watermark on her leggings so she went through something. I'd imagine her footwear, esp something like flipflops, were sucked off in a mud bottomed creek. You might also take off a shirt or waterlogged sweatshirt than is weighing you down as you're slogging, or so it won't knock you off balance and let you be swept away. Her hair looks like perhaps it hasn't changed since before everything went sideways. The roll in the leggings' waistband might have been how she originally dressed, or she might have rolled it to dry off as much skin as possible.

She probably grabbed a stick for balance and/or to feel her way (and the upcoming depth) of whatever she crossed. I think she appears to be moving gingerly because she can't see. If it's pitch black you'd very likely go slowly and be looking straight down for holes (probably a reflex), as well as follow a loop. If she's already wet, at that hour, and even in August, hypothermia is a real possibility.

as well as follow a loop
On second thought, I'm wondering if she wasn't going in a loop but was just photographed in the same place because she had hunkered down close by (presumably where the remains were found). We know that lost people tend to go in circles, but barefoot in the dark you might stay put, especially recognizing a man-made structure. She might've figured it was safer to stay there and hope the feeders would be checked by people in the daylight. It's also possible that if cameras around these stations were a known thing, she might've hoped to be caught on one, even if she didn't know their placement.

As for why she might go to and fro to be photographed seemingly headed in the same direction...perhaps she wanted to relieve herself away from whatever makeshift shelter she had. And we don't know much about the backpack, perhaps she had a lighter to try to make a fire. With only 2 photos (that we know of), maybe she was collecting wood. Or maybe she was simply moving to stay warm and/or awake, and it's a case of paradoxical undressing. Just looking at her hair I don't see her being out there for weeks. And leggings wouldn't be the first choice if you were living off the grid, so I don't think she intended to be there. I want to know the undisclosed amount of money...they're definitely checking anyone on the lam, likely with both bleached and dark hair. Or it might have been split second, she may have hitched a ride, jumped out of the a car at the Sonic and took off for the woods. And lastly, she could've been on drugs or having a psychotic break. More than one MP has fled into the woods in the throes of paranoia, etc. I'd imagine they've checked all security cameras in the vicinity, but not to say she didn't get there off the nearest road.

My take on the investigation matches Carbuff's, and they are also branching out to other areas/possibilities.

I just discovered this case. It seems like she was first seen on the trail cam at 1:33AM. She's blurry and partially visible (maybe she's running?) but still barefoot and in the same muddy leggings. At 4:30AM she appears again, holding the stick and moving more slowly. I can't help but wonder what happened in those three hours.

She was said to have tattoos but I don't see any on any of her pics.
