The body of Rachel Cruise, 32, was discovered Tuesday by a passing motorist in an industrial area just a mile from where a Pittsburg teenager was found asphyxiated on Nov. 14, and about four miles from where another woman was found stabbed to death on Dec. 5.
Cruise, the mother of two young children, was apparently killed somewhere else and dumped Monday in the 1300 block of California Avenue near Loveridge Road, Zbacnik said. It was not yet known how she died.
"There is no evidence that she was killed there, no bushes bent or crumpled - nothing to indicate that there was a struggle," he said....
Police suspect that Cruise may have been a prostitute, citing interviews with local street walkers, who said they had recently seen her "working the streets," and Cruise's mother, who told investigators that she suspected her daughter of drug use and prostitution, Zbacnik said....
Zbacnik said Pittsburg police arrested Cruise in August for allegedly being under the influence of narcotics, but there were no records to show she had ever been arrested for prostitution.
Cruise's mother, he said, told investigators that her daughter's behavior had become extremely erratic since 1994, when she stopped working and drifted around the country.
"Her mother had not seen her since last Friday, and her estranged boyfriend had not seen her in several days," Zbacnik said.
Cruise's mother told police that Cruise's frequent wanderings had alienated her boyfriend and that she rarely saw her 6-year-old son or 7-year-old daughter, Zbacnik said. The children live with the boyfriend, who is their father. Investigators said he is not a suspect at this time.
