I saw that information in a news report this am, and was surprised to hear they had a formula that could determine his possible location if he had fallen in the river. And they were right.
I wondered about possible head injuries as well. He could have developed a slow brain bleed, which can lead to loss of consciousness, not necessarily immediately afterward, but can happen hours or even days after the injury. If so, the autopsy will find it.
The bar records show he was served one drink and two waters. Not enough to make someone as falling down drunk as he clearly was on video. So he either drank quite a bit elsewhere, or he was drugged. The toxicology report may provide answers.
I just learned of this case for the first time today, when a story about it was posted on Facebook. I have to agree about Coates, I mean, she was with him when she went missing. Hopefully someone will come forward with information and he will be arrested and reveal where he hid her body.

If they were able to look at Suzanne’s phone, maybe they saw the concerning text messages between Suzanne and her sister. Or maybe her sister had already notified LE of her concerns.
My guess is the searching and processing took longer due to the small town law enforcement probably lacking experience and confidence in conducting that type of search. The processing of evidence would probably take longer as well. They probably were being extra careful to dot their “i”s and...
