It’s been nine months since 19-year-old Ruthey Smith went missing in Los Angeles, leaving her family in Long Beach searching each day for any little bit of information that may bring her back home.

Smith, a North Long Beach resident, had been working in prostitution for some time as a way to make it out on her own and provide for her daughter, her family says, when she went missing on March 2. She was last seen in the area of Figueroa and 70th streets, an area in South Los Angeles commonly targeted by authorities for its human trafficking and prostitution operations.

Hoping she is safe as well, @GuyfromCanada, but I think she would have gotten in touch with her family, especially because of her daughter.
I don't see a good ending for this, but maybe, since the holidays are upon us, she would try to call.
Sometimes someone will get down a road, STS, where they can't see a good way out and they do things because they can see no other way. We here at WS see it too, too often.
Saying a little prayer for her and her family.

Her FB, no posts since Jul 2021.

Wow looking at Ruthey's facebook page hurt my heart. That baby girl needs her Mama to be whole and healthy :(
Hoping the news story and the Google hits here at WS, help in the family's search for her.

Its so sad when people go into this profession like this. I hope she wasnt forced.
They really face danger
Agreed. In a statement from her Mom (noted in this thread earlier) she stated that her daughter had gone into the profession "to make it on her own". That doesn't sound like it was forced. Doesn't alleviate the danger in any way, however. I hope she is found safe.

On Christmas Day in 2021, Smith had arrived at her family's home in Long Beach, California late and "messed up", and admitted to working in the sex trade. Her family asked for assistance for her from Gems Uncovered, a Long Beach nonprofit that aids victims of sexual exploitation. Smith continued in sex work, however. Days prior to her disappearance, she said she didn't want to do it anymore and was afraid she would be abducted.

“She just asks why everybody else has a mommy and she doesn’t. She’s just confused. She’s hurting,” said Kathryn Smith, Ruthey’s mother, of her granddaughter.

Kathryn has been raising her granddaughter since the suspected abduction of her daughter, Ruthey Smith, over a year ago. Long Beach police have said they believe she is a victim of human trafficking, and that detectives are actively investigating the case.

Kathryn said 19-year-old Ruthey began doing sex work to provide greater income for her infant daughter near the end of 2021. Ruthey was last seen in early March 2022 on Figueroa Street in Los Angeles, an area infamous for prostitution and sex trafficking.

Lois Lee, a well known anti-sex trafficking advocate who has been aiding victims in LA County and beyond since the 70s, told the Signal Tribune in a 2022 interview that sex workers who offer their services on the streets are particularly vulnerable to abductions by traffickers.

Ruthey may also go by the aliases Grayson or Winter, according to the California Department of Justice.

Smith’s family acknowledges she had been working as a prostitute in order to support her daughter, Ocean, who was 1-year-old at the time of her disappearance.

Smith’s mother, Kathryn Renesto, and her younger brother had painstakingly searched the area where she disappeared, looking for leads and evidence.

They were able to track down the last known video of Smith, seen with a group of people in a neighborhood that was well-known for sex work at all hours of the day, NewsNation reports.

Authorities believe Smith is a victim of human trafficking. Her family said she would never voluntarily leave her daughter behind.
  • Missing Woman Ruthey Smith
“Somebody here in the United States has information about Ruthey Smith and who she was last seen with,” said Moses Castillo, a retired Los Angeles police detective.

Castillo spoke at a press conference held March 2 at the San Pedro United Methodist Church while surrounded by Smith’s family.

“My daughter’s been missing for two years but I won’t stop and I’ll continue to say her name,” Renesto said tearfully. “We will never give up until we find you. I need somebody to say something. It’s the worst in the world, to not know if your child is dead or alive. If you see something, say something.”

She has a pierced nose and belly button. She has several tattoos with the names “Ezra” and “Lamarion” tattooed near her ears and the name “Ocean” tattooed on her chest along with a wave.

She was last seen wearing a light-colored jacket, black sandals and a black purse. She also goes by the names “Winter” or “Grayson,” her family said.

“She is a kind and loving soul,” said Ingrid Klungreseter, Smith’s grandmother. “We need the community’s help to bring her home safely. Trafficking is a horrific crime. If anyone knows anything, I’m begging you to do what’s morally right and speak up with any information you may have. People who are trafficked deserve for [information about their disappearance] to be national.”

Wow, 2 years with no answers. :(

Smith’s family has provided DNA to be placed into a federal database called NamUS, which uses genetic information to help coroners identify unknown bodies.

Moses confirmed that Smith’s DNA has not been located through the database yet, which has given her family a sense of hope that she may be alive and able to come home.

The Long Beach Police Department is actively investigating Smith’s disappearance as a human trafficking case and is asking for the community’s help.

“I need my child,” Renesto said. “She was involved in a horrific crime. I need the world to help me find her. These victims deserve to be found. Ruthey, if you’re watching, know your mother will never give up, your brother will never give up, we will never give up.”

Anyone who may know of Smith’s whereabouts or has information on the case is asked to call Long Beach Police’s Missing Person’s Unit at 562-570-7246 or police dispatch at 562-435-6711.

Anonymous tips can be provided to L.A. Regional Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 or online at lacrimestoppers.org.
