You can see in the photos from the mall he is 20kg lighter in recent times. His face is all sunken in and he has veins protruding through the skin of his arms. This to me suggests more someone with drug addiction, likely meth, who also happened to have schizophrenia.

Just my opinion, purely speculating here, but I truely believe Australia has a very serious drug problem (and alot of it is very poorly manufactured) they aren't doing anything about.

I'm not trying to discredit you. Just offering my opinion on what it is.
It does look like some kind of lake with a creek or drainage system running through it. It also looks deep due to the dark and seemingly clear imagery provided by satellite. Maybe a man made catchment to help with road flooding. As there appears to be quite a few in the area.
