I agree with that, too. Of course I would like to have seen an arrest, but how many victims would he have had between then and now. It is scary to think about it.

Pam Milam's case has been resolved after 47 years. Her killer has been identified as Jeffrey Lynn Hand. I searched the forums and didn't find a post on her or this topic. Apologies if this is a double post. Police identify killer in 47-year-old cold case murder of ISU student

This is moving forward, and there are a few more places to look, along with the help of a genealogy expert in my family - that will help a ton.

Did you get confirmation at all on this? If so, it will help narrow the path in searching for Bertha. Respect to you.

While the Bertha Haeft info is circumstantial, I did another search for Bertha, and found that she is listed amongst records as both Marie B Tidd and Marie Tidd and married to Ernest Newell (as a previous poster submitted :). I am going to keep working these angles, and if we can eliminate...

I have tried that email, and I got a reply that it was invalid.

I agree that this is now pointing to the Bertha that is featured in these articles. As well, I think it can be determined that she simply walked away, due to untreated mental illness. The only way we can try and get a resolution is through loads of documents.

Exactly. The surnames throw things off. There is heavy circumstantial evidence. I do believe that she did walk away, though.

I went through this thread because I was thinking of this case. I did notice some things some other things. In the 1910 US Census, Bertha is listed as having been born in Ohio, not W.V. When you compare that record, and the one from Find A Grave, there are some very big similarities -such as...

I suspect foul play is the biggest factor. So many questions, though, need to be answered. A lot of lost documents and memories can and is, hampering this.

I was thinking there was a very slim chance that, that was her.

It's funny you mention her applying for one under Croft or Vangilder. I did find one for Mary J Croft 7/11/1911 (someone else found that, too - it's in a previous post) and I did do a search for Vangilder, Mary J (that one didn't turn up). I am thinking of multiple things, but I need to sort...

What exactly did SS say? I know they can be limiting and SS#s recycle every 50 years.

I definitely would not say anything on the Facebook page about any suspects. Concrete evidence would surely be needed for that, along with LE publicly naming a POI. Someone, even if they were a child at the time, knows something. Someone always does.

I am still following this case, and being it is almost Christmas, there is never a better time to find the POIs visiting family for the holidays. Eventually these folks will turn up. It is only a matter of time.

OK that sounds wonderful. I just hope we can start getting some answers, beginning with Mary's case.

While I have the gut feeling that one person is probably responsible for these disappearances, I think it might be a little early to conclude that a serial killer was involved. To coincide with these disappearances, one would need known murder victims that fit the time frame, area, physical and...

Exactly. Some kind of foul play was involved. However, I feel it was just one person who is responsible for these things.
