I'm not familiar with criminal trials but I think you can (usually? sometimes? always?) ask for a trial by judge instead of a jury. In theory, a judge would be informed on the rule of law.
It seems like that would be the way to go, with a bench trial and just a judge, if the issue was something...
It's one thing when drunk drivers who kill people are acting inappropriately in the hours after the deaths. They are presumably still drunk and probably don't grasp what's going on. It's ugly and awful and being drunk isn't an excuse but an explanation for their actions.
This is days and weeks...
We had one teenaged boy drown and another nearly drowned but was rescued by paramedics this winter. It was a case of boys doing risky things or just not realizing it was risky -- in this case, playing on thin ice on a lake -- and then one boy falls in and the other tries to rescue him. It was...
IMO, with the economy the way it is these days, having kids in their 30s, 40s, or even 50s living with their parents out of financial necessity happens independent of any mental issues. Though, obviously this guy was pretty messed up based on his murdering all those people.
At least eight people have been killed and 13 wounded in a shooting in the Serbian village of Dubona, the country’s Interior Ministry spokesperson told CNN.
The shooter remains at large, and a warrant has been issued for a 21-year-old male suspect, identified as Uros B. by Interior Minister...
The BBC article says that the police were always called about gunfire in the neighborhood but never did anything. All the same, I'd not confront someone like that directly. The Daily Mail article also mentioned he was drunk at the time.
I'm guessing that moving was not a viable option for the...
I feel bad for the parents who seem to be blaming themselves, saying that they acted reasonably but not "exceptionally" and that their son needed parents who were exceptional and they failed him.
They seem like they were in close contact with him and were helping him to get in to see his...
Louisville officer who was shot at bank is transferred to another hospital
The Louisville Metro police officer who was critically injured in the mass shooting at Old National Bank April 10 has been transferred to another hospital to treat pneumonia. Nickolas Wilt is now being cared for at UofL...
I gotta admit, I wouldn't open the door to someone bleeding on my doorstep. Well, first of all, I don't answer the door at night. But if I did see someone like that I would definitely call 911, but I would be worried about opening the door for them because clearly there is someone out there...
I just wanted to mention a post I saw on Reddit that I thought was interesting.
Someone posted in the liberal gun owner group about how they were considering getting a gun for protection and asking if people thought it was a good idea. He said that he was scared in his own neighborhood and was...
I blame the presence of cable news for stoking up fear in people. I don't know why this man shot -- and to be fair I've not heard his side of the story though everything I have heard sounds really bad for him -- but I think cable news going on and on about crimes 24/7 can make people more...
It's SRO -- School Resource Officer.
RSO is Registered Sex Offender which is what I kept thinking whenever I read it, before I quickly remembered they just meant SRO.
I wonder how the 12-year-old and 17-year-old knew each other. That is a pretty huge age difference at that age. They shouldn't have been in the same school or anything. Maybe the same neighborhood? But still, how would they even meet up with that age difference? Odd.
I only heard the very tail end of it on CNN when driving in the car. I don't know what went on at the press conference but there was a guest on CNN who presumably knew something about crime and justice and she was saying that it was the strangest press conference she had ever heard.
Now I...
I'm still confused on what has and has not been verified. But if she was in inpatient care and then transitioned to outpatient care, my question is: was this purely a medical decision or did insurance come into play? Maybe doctors thought she needed more in-person treatment but she was limited...
