My heart goes out to this family. From what I've read so far, it seems that the son was way out of control and those in th house were in danger. I think that as more information comes out, we may learn that the son was very troubled.

It bugged me too - I didn't like it at all!! IMO, it seems unnatural that a loving mother would refer to any child as "it" - especially when she is aware of the gender and the name.
