The Swiss army knife is a further piece of evidence added to the crime scene to point in the direction of Linda Hoffman-Pugh. IMO many, many things are explained if we appreciate that the Ramseys set up the crime scene to point at their housekeeper. The Swiff army knife is one of these. It has been placed in the basement in order to implicate LHP. That was the Ramsey's plan. The note at the base of the stairs was designed to point directly at LHP. The "two gentlemen" in the note point to her husband and his friend who had recently done work for the Ramseys. Why was the body in the winecellar? Because Mr HP and his friend (two gentlemen) were the people who had been in the wine cellar most recently. The Swiss Army knife was placed in the basement because it would provide a definite link with the housekeeper (and only the housekeeper). Why was there no POE for an intruder? Because the Ramseys planned to direct all suspicians to someone with a key, namely LHP. Patsy immediately named LHP as a suspect. Keep this in mind and many of the little mysteries are solved. Patsy moved the knife to the basement. IMO
