Madeleine McCann case
Kate cries like a poker player

The key to the mystery lies "certainly with Kate, a very special and disturbed woman", guarantees to CM Jose Cabrera Fornero, a forensic psychiatrist who has been following the case since the beginning. The Spanish man attentively watched "the staged interview" that the couple gave to Antena 3, and its purpose was "to have the Spanish people on their side". But 70 percent of the viewers who called the channel believes the McCanns are lying, and the psychiatrist sides with them - "by crying without moving a single muscle, Kate looked like a poker player".

A specialist in facial expressions, Cabrera says that "the face of Kate is always the same, except for the tears - the first ones over the last five months and curiously only after having been criticised for not crying". Now she did it but her face "doesn't express any emotion or feeling. When one cries, one's face muscles move, and she didn't move a single muscle, just like poker players. That is highly significant", says the Spanish psychiatrist, and "brings us the certainty that she is hiding something".

Cabrera says the 30 minutes of conversation ended up being "a non-spontaneous interview, perfectly ordered in terms of the questions that were asked by the journalist. And it gives us the impression that the entire stance was staged by the couple".

The Spanish man even remembers Gerry's last sentence and even considers it "genial": "Don't talk until they take the microphone off you". This only proves that all of it was just a big theatre play, the entire interview was staged. That is clear".

José Cabrera noticed that "during half an hour of interview his only concern was to control her. It's extraordinary. Whenever she opened her mouth to speak, he squeezed her hand - and all of this because the key to this mystery certainly lies with her, she is a very special woman..."

Kate McCann "had psychiatric problems for a long time", the specialist guarantees, and "now they have become worse". Cabrera retained an interview that Maddie's grandparents gave to the Spanish television recently: "In their innocence, they said that Kate had told them, some time before the disappearance, that the little girl was looking increasingly like herself, which from a psychiatric point of view means a lot..."

For the Spaniard, the origin of a bad relationship between mother and daughter - that was reflected by the writings about Madeleine in Kate's personal diary - "which is highly significant" for all the specialists that have been following this case since early May".

Gerry's greatest concern has been "to control his wife's impulses in public - and that was once again well demonstrated throughout this interview", says José Cabrera Fornero. "He is the one who dominates the entire situation, he knows everything and he knows he must control her and her problematic personality, so she does not exceed herself in front of the cameras and talks too much..."

All the gestures and facial expressions "become fatal for someone who has something to hide" - this is dictated by the experience that was collected over the years by this specialist in forensic psychiatry. "And there is no way to avoid that."

Nothing moves Jose Cabrera "against this couple", whom he does not know, but he defended the McCanns' guilt in the 'Pros & Contras' show on RTP, when the Policia Judiciaria confirmed their suspicions on the couple - and yesterday he reinforced his theory to CM, one day after Kate and Gerry chose Spain for their first interview after becoming arguidos.

The English press itself confirmed yesterday that "70 percent of viewers that called Antena 3 believe the McCanns are lying", the online edition of the 'Daily Mail' announced.

José Cabrera was not surprised: "Any English person is cold, but there is something more to her - her personality is not normal. And he makes an impression by only worrying about her answers..."

"The interview was a circus act": Moita Flores, criminologist, considers the interview was another act from the McCanns.

Correio da Manha - What is your opinion about the McCanns during the interview they gave to Spanish television?

Moita Flores - The whole thing looked like a circus act to me, duting which the couple repeated the usual commonplaces, once again escaping the essential. And once again they revealed that they have a lot to tell, but they don't want to...

- During this interview to Antena 3, Kate shows herself a lot more emotional that usual.

- But the curious thing was that even before this interview was made, it was known the lady was going to cry, which then happened. And she even managed to play the part well...

- Do you believe there was image staging during this interview?

- One should notice that it was known beforehand that the couple would take the opportunity to compliment the Portuguese police, which then happened...

- Gerry looks confident that the DNA tests cannot incriminate them.

- When he mentioned the tests, it was a silly reply to a docile interviewer. Everybody knows that DNA tests identify people, and they don't lie. But they do not condemn anyone on their own. That was miserable.

- How can the couple's statements be defined?

- It was an act that nobody believes in. After the kidnapping theory, now they insist on their innocence. An innocent person does not need this...

Company hired by the McCanns placed dozens of men in the terrain

Top detectives are searching for Maddie

Gerry and Kate McCann have hired the Spanish private detective agency Metodo3, which offers the services of dozens of elite private investigators. This company owns the telephone number 0034902300213, which was created to collect information on Madeleine and which will soon be prepared to receive leads in several languages, as Spanish, English, French, Portuguese or Arabic.

The cost of each call will be a little over 0,85 euros, a source at Metodo3 has told 24Horas.

Yesterday, when it was contacted by our newspaper, the network of operators who are supposed to take the calls was not one hundred percent operational yet, given the fact that they had nobody to answer in Portuguese or French, and even less in Arabic. They only spoke Spanish.

Since Wednesday at 9.30 a.m., "many calls" have reached this phone line, especially from abroad.

A source at the company said the investigators' work was to "receive information, investigate the more credible ones and to pass them on to the authorities that are in charge of the investigation".

It is noted that until yesterday, the company confirmed they had not delivered anything relevant to the Portuguese police.

Without revealing the exact number of investigators that are designated for the Madeleine case, this source only stated they are more than 10 and that many of them are already on the terrain, namely in Spain and Morocco.

Metodo3 was created 20 years ago in Barcelona, by Marita Fernandez Lado, and has since then investigated over 16 thousand cases. It presently occupies the first place in the ranking of the best detective agencies in Spain. It has 32 investigators in Barcelona, 15 in Madrid and 3 in Argentina. It even received a honorable mention from the Spanish Interior Ministery for its dedication to issues of security in companies, namely in the computer area. Metodo3 has a hacker department.

But as far as 24Horas was able to discover with a source close to the family, British agency Control Risk is also helping out, covering the area of England.

When contacted by 24Horas, Liz Freeborn, a member of staff, said she could not give away detail for confidentiality reasons, but confirmed the existence of a department that handles abductions, and the company operates at worldwide level.

PJ awaits registry of McCann phonecalls

The Portuguese authorities still don't have the register of phonecalls made by the McCanns during the last five months and it is, therefore, impossible for them to check the calls.

Or, in other words, they don't know exactly who the couple called, nor when, according to what 24Horas has learned from a top level source within the Judiciary who wishes to remain anonymous. "We are dealing with a problem which is held up by the international cooperation that this case demands. The PJ and the Public Ministry have done everything necessary, but the fact that we are dealing with foreign citizens implies that things are out of our hands," highlights the same source.

When the McCanns became suspects, which happened a few days after little Madeleine's disappearance the 3 of May in Praia da Luz, Lagos, Algarve, the PJ tried to obtain a list of phone calls that the McCann made on the eve, and after, that fateful day. Except the McCanns and all their friends used cellphones on a British network.

As such, it was necessary to ask the English authorities to request this information from the British companies. This request would have been made when the investigation team was under the leadership of Gonçalo Amaral, since removed from the case for having, specifically, accused the English authorities of only performing diligences which protoected the McCann couple, which, as is public knowledge, has strong connections to the English PM, Gordon Brown, to the point that he provided his own spokesperson, Clarence Mitchell, to help the couple in their defense.

Until now, these registers, that would allow the Portuguese authorities to know who the couple called, have not arrived.

But this [type of] situation is not new to the case. The same has happened with the DNA results which were requested from one of the best known laboratories in the world, located in the city of Birmingham. The results have been dribbled in to the investigators, but the final report has still not been sent to the Portimão Public Minister.

"At this moment, we only have various contradictions from the evidence collected and the results are not conclusive," admitted the source connected to the investigation.

Maddie's case could last for 15 years

The case of the disappearance of the small girl Madeleine McCann in Praia da Luz, could drag on for 15 years, according to lawyers. In the worst scenario, the delays for the McCanns to get access to the investigation could be as late as August 2008.

According to several 24 Horas sources, the time delays for the investigation of the case only refer to the possibility that the arguidos could gain access to the process and learn what they are suspected of. However, as there are no preventive measures of coertion nor of freedom deprivation, and given the possibility that neither the McCanns nor Robert Murat will be arrested, the investigation may continue for an undetermined time.

After 15 years a case gets archived. 24Horas discovered that the prosecutor José Magalhães and Meneses, the person responsible for investigations, will request that the criminal instruction judge in Portimão, Pedro Frias, declares the special complexity of the case.

The request is based on the fact that laboratory tests are still being carried out abroad, and not all of the results have been received by the PT authorities, and because of the need to request international cooperation for carrying out certain acts, such as new interviews with the McCanns and their relatives and friends who were at the Tapas Bar on the day the little girl disappeared.

Regarding their arguido status, it will be very difficult for the McCanns and Robert Murat to free themselves of this status.

The McCanns therefore will not be able to leave the UK without informing the Portimao court.

According to the previous Penal Process Code , the arguidos could gain access to the process after 8 months, dating from the start of the investigation because of secrecy laws. Only in January 2008 will the couple’s lawyers be consult the information. Now, with the declaration of the special complexity of the case, this period will be extended for one year, or in other words, until May 2008.

The McCann Circus

The McCanns have stopped searching for Madeleine. They are forcibly trying to convince us that they had nothing to do with her death

The McCanns have entered a process of self-flagellation. The circus they built around themselves since their daughter's disappearance is starting to turn against its creators. Now they gave an interview to Tele3. Organized, studied questions, a docile interviewer and the same words again and again. Not a single explanation concerning their daughter's whereabouts. A round conversation, lacking nexus, filled with commonplaces, of ready-made sentences, but not a single word about the reason that led them to abandon three children in a foreign apartment, without a person watching over them.

For two months, the favourite circus act was the abduction theory. Sky News was called before the authorities, the world's press, the political authorities in both countries, even the polices, cried in one voice: abduction! Find our daughter. Never before had so many people been searching for one child, throughout the entire world. But the story that had been proclaimed as true, unique and inequivocal, had been poorly told. A sketch that was drawn under the directions of one of the main witnesses was the motto and the motive. Now we find out, through the McCanns' publicity machine, that it is nothing more than the sketch of a cartoon character. It could be the character of captain Haddock or Tintin or the kidnapper in any of their cartoon stories. And the huge team of private detectives, aides, advisors, consultants, insist he is somewhere in Spain, Portugal or Morocco. Why? What is the basis for this? What objective, or subjective, reasons lead to this belief?

I cannot understand how experienced lawyers allow this frightened couple, who watch their credibility fading away on a daily basis, to continue to produce this ritual of sorrow that hurts those who watch them, and listen to them, as they do not answer. They mock us.

They don't answer the police because they are arguidos and have the right to remain silent. To the newspapers, they condirion the questions that they want to answer, and they use pink journalists for the acts that they stage. And when they shut up, they mobilize their allies in order to elongate the act. But concerning the facts, not a single word.

Nobody doubts that they are suffering. Few have doubts about the truth that they refuse to answer to.

It will take some time for this case to leave the newspapers' front pages, and exceptionally neither the Portuguese nor the British police are the vehicles of the news. The McCanns have stopped looking for Madeleine. They are forcibly trying to convince us that they had nothing to do with her death. Because they are innocent? Maybe. But this is not the way - evading the essential questions, staging tears and cries, refusing to answer the more agressive questions - that they manage to convince anyone of their innocence. Quite to the contrary. And do not say that it is the judicial secret that prevents them from telling the truth. When we are innocent, we scream our sorrow into the depths of hell. We do not built propaganda circuses of poor taste.

Results are not useful to accuse the McCanns

The results of the forensic analyses that were performed at the Birmingham lab, and which have been anxiously awaited by the Policia Judiciaria for over a month in order to clarify the case of the disappearance of Madeleine McCann, are not conclusive to determine the child’s death and to accuse her parents of homicide, sources connected to those services have revealed to the British press. A situation that the PJ’s national director, Alipio Ribeiro, had admitted himself when he went to Faro, on the 10th, to present the new coordinator of the process, Paulo Rebelo. At that time, the senior officer said that “there is nothing conclusive at this moment”.

On that occasion, Alipio Ribeiro also said he expected the final report on the analyses that were performed on blood residues, hair and bodily fluids that were collected at the apartment where Maddie disappeared from, on May 3, in Praia da Luz, and in the car that was hired by her parents three weeks later, would arrive “soon”.

But 17 days later, the PJ still does not possess all the results, which is leading the investigators near a nervous breakdown. To make the situation worse, there are the formalities that are related to the trip of a PJ team to England, to again interrogate the McCanns, who, according to the investigators, have not been helping in the process. Last Friday, speaking to DN, the president of ASFIC, Carlos Anjos, said that “if the McCanns wanted to help, they should come to Portugal and answer the questions that my colleagues in Portimao have to ask them”.

The Portuguese police, who have been targeted by the attacks of the British press since the beginning of the process, was again an issue in an article published by daily newspaper ‘News of the World’, authored by Lord Stevens, one of the most prestigious policemen of the United Kingdom, who was a top detective for over 30 years.

After analyzing the known evidence of the Maddie case, Lord Stevens was peremptory in saying the child’s parents “are innocent”, basing his theory on the fact that “there is no strong evidence in the process”.

They let junior officers drive them on the 35-mile journey from the crime scene at Praia da Luz to the vehicle investigation centre in Portimao.

Former Scotland Yard detective Hamish Brown said: “It defies all rules of investigation. It’s positively wrong.

Any human who got into that vehicle would risk contaminating evidence, damaging fingerprints and possible cross-transference of fibres.

“It should have gone on to a low-loader to preserve any evidence it might contain.”

Madeleine: McCann friends deny 'silence pact'

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/main.jhtml?xml=/news/2007/10/29/nmaddy429.xml

Seven friends - Russell O’Brien and his partner Jane Tanner, Rachael and Matthew Oldfield, Fiona and David Payne, and Mrs Payne’s mother Dianne Webster - made a public statement to insist they had nothing to hide.

"We wish to state that there is categorically no 'pact of silence' or indeed anything secretive between us - just the desire to assist the search for Madeleine," they said in a joint statement.
From day one, the police in Portugal told us not to discuss our statements.
It is incredibly frustrating for us that the fact we have done as we were asked to by the Portuguese police is still being looked upon as suspicious.
Everything we have done, and continue to do, has been to help with the search for Madeleine and to end this nightmare for Gerry and Kate."

Madeleine McCann case
Rebelo tests scenarios in Luz

Paulo Rebelo was yesterday for the first time at the apartment where Madeleine disappeared from, in Praia da Luz. The new coordinator of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of Portimao led a team of six investigators who, throughout the afternoon, tested several scenarios and even made a possible reconstitution of what happened on the evening of May 3, in the apartment nr. 5A of the Ocean Club.

In the company of the team members that he brought in from Lisbon - composed of two homicide inspectors, one from sexual abuse, another that is experienced in robberies and two specialists in technical analysis - Paulo Rebelo tried to find details and loose ends that may open new leads or confirm the existing ones.

The investigators entered the apartment around 3 p.m. and soon after opened the shutters of the window to the room where Madeleine was sleeping with her siblings on the night she disappeared. Next, they passed a blue blanket through the window, folded like it was covering a child's body.

Paulo Rebelo was even one of the elements of the team who payed most attention to the window, having risen and lowered the shutters several times, apparently evaluating its operation. Moments later, the team turned their attention on the rest of the house, and on the veranda and the garden that is located on the back side of the apartment. Here, the inspectors analysed the height of the bushes and the firmness of the balcony, as the leader of the investigation entered and left the apartment several times. One of the inspectors brought a drum into the house, containing a liquid that was not possible to identify.

Halfway through the afternoon, Paulo Rebelo crossed the street into the direction of the area that gives access to Robert Murat's house, as if he were evaluating the distance between the villa and the apartment. When CM asked him what the purpose of that diligence was, he just replied he "was working".

It was 5.45 p.m. when the team left the Ocean Club: Rebelo and one inspector then walked into the direction of the Praia da Luz belvedere - walking past the church - where they stood in observation for approximately five minutes. But they did not walk the fastest path, choosing instead to walk down several pedestrian streets of the village.

(then the article reports on the news from UK media of yesterday)

"She is dead and buried close to here", Martin Van Wyk, a private detective from South Africa, investigates in Luz

Correio da Manha - Were you hired by the McCanns to find Maddie?

Martin Van Wyk - No. I contacted the girl's aunt, Philomena McCann, per email, and offered my help. The McCann couple knows I'm here, but privately. I have not even contacted the Portuguese police, in order to avoid misunderstandings.

CM - You have been in Praia da Luz for a week. What conclusions did you reach?

MVW - Unfortunately, I think the child is dead and the body is hidden close by, within the village. I think she left the apartment in the evening, walking towards the beach. She was looking for her parents and somebody catched her. The next day, that person was confronted with the news that she had been kidnapped and was scared. Not knowing what to do, the person ended up killing her, maybe accidentally.

CM - What is your experience in cases like this one?

MVW - I was with the Military Police in South Africa for six years, and I've been a private detective - a 'bounty hunter' - for 15 years now. In 1997, I investigated the disappearance of a 13-year-old girl, who was found dead. At that time, I contacted a medium whose vision ended up revealing the truth. I talked to her about this case. She has the same opinion I have.

CM - What do you think of the fact that the parents and Robert Murat were made arguidos?

MVW - The parents should have been treated as suspects right from the start, but I don't think they are guilty. Maybe one of their friends is hiding something. As far as Robert Murat is concerned, the police should dig up his backyard. I return to Cape Town tomorrow [today], frustrated because I could not go further.

Low-key service to mark six months since Madeleine's disappearance

On Saturday, the family of missing Madeleine McCann will hold a church service to mark six months since she was last seen in the Algarve resort of Praia da Luz.

Mr McCann explains in his latest internet diary entry: "We will be marking this milestone very quietly with an ecumenical prayer service for Madeleine and other missing children in the local Anglican church."

Also, From Paulo Reis:

http://www.anorak.co.uk/twitterings/177197.html

A teenager, who was with her family at Ocean Club, saw Gerry McCann and Jeremy Wilkins talking, the night Madeleine disappeared – but she didn’t saw Jane Tanner or a man carrying a child. The girl wasn’t in the list of guests, as their presence at Ocean Club wasn’t registered with the management. Father and daughter have been in Portugal, recently, to help Policia Judiciaria in the reconstruction of what happened the night of May 3 and to give a formal statement to Police, according to a source close to the case.

Speaking to SOS Madeleine, the Irish teenager confirmed she saw Gerry McCann and Jeremy Wilkins talking, for a few minutes, near the McCann apartment: “There was only the father of the little girl talking to another man.”

McCanns' dinner questioned
Rebelo went to hear people at Tapas

The investigations's leading officer left the apartment and decided himself, on Monday afternoon, to go question the Tapas restaurant's employees about the evening of the crime.

The spontaneous attitude was a surprise for everyone - PJ hadn't heard them since May - and, as far as CM was able to find out, Paulo Rebelo asked for a description of every step the McCanns and their friends did during the dinner of May 3.

The new coordinator of the Judiciaria in Portimao was always accompanied by his team. First, during the three hours he spent inside the apartment where Maddie disappeared from, as CM reported yesterday - and afterwards, apart from the walks to the house of Robert Murat, the church and the village's beach, Paulo Rebelo was at the Tapas and near the pool, which is located right in front of the restaurant's terrace.

The PJ's members analysed distances and the visibility from the terrace to the entrance of the apartment, which is practically null due to the shrubbery - and at that time, by the end of the afternoon, Rebelo decided to directly question the same employees of the restaurant whihc had been on duty on the evening of the crime.

They had all given their statements on the days that followed the child's disappearance - but six months later, the PJ wanted to hear them again in an informal way: the times at which Kate, Gerry and their friends arrived for dinner, who arrived later and how much time later, who got up during the meal and when they returned, until the final alarm, given by Kate, of the little girl's disappearance.

This happened on the same day that a nanny who worked at the Ocean Club told the private investigators of Metodo 3, according to the British press, that she caught "a stranger hiding close to the apartment shortly before Madeleine disappeared".

The attempt of Paulo Rebelo's team to reconstruct the crime is seen by Clarence Mitchell, the McCanns' spokesman, as an assumption of the couple's innocence: "We welcome the indications that the Portuguese police is seriously considering the abduction theory - because that is what really happened".

(Thank you to MariaJose in Lisbon (from Proboards 79) for the translation!!)

According to "News of the World," the new agency detective, Metodo 3, hired by the parents McCann said that Madeleine had been "targeted" by pedophiles in Praia de Luza in the tourist complex. A source, according to "News of the World," reportedly declared: "It's terrible to hear, but it gives us all the hope that Maddie is still alive." Kate and Gerry McCann face the idea that madeleine is in the hands of a pedophile network in Morocco. After considering all aspects, says the same media, the agency is convinced that Maddie was removed to his family in the vacation apartment in the Algarve then swept North Africa to be delivered to the sex industry. The newspaper added that the detective agency Metodo 3, based in Barcelona, would NEVER missed an investigation to locate a missing person, including a teenager they had rescued after the latter was abducted by a pervert .

Network organized?

The private detectives, reportedly started working for the parents of Maddie, two months ago, now have a list of countries which would be of known pedophiles to find girls of the age of Maddie. Then they will send their "international network of agents" to follow the movements of their suspects before and after the 03 May. Metodo 3 think that the kidnappers ferraient part of a highly organized network. They have watched for days the couple Kate and Gerry McCann, and their children, in their hotel Portuguese, before proceeding to the action and remove Madeleine. They allegedly used the opportunity to 8 minutes in the absence of parents in a restaurant. The small reportedly been taken in North Africa, probably in Morocco. "Once in Morocco, Madeleine would be considered a good" product "in terms of money and prestige among some patients. It could easily be sold a number of times, "added the director of Metodo 3.

Parents

A source close to the investigation reportedly declared: "Obviously mention Madeleine as a commodity that these people (note: Pedophiles) barter between them is extremely difficult for parents. But for the first time, a credible theory of what happened is being developed by a European leader in the field of research. It gives hope to parents and Madeleine is still alive! This is a significant development on the basis of information from an expert who had access to a huge amount of data. For six months Kate and Gerry had to go through innumerable torments and theories often inaccurate and without any foundation. It is illegal for Metodo 3 to work in Portugal and the investigation is separate from that of PJ but has been endorsed by the local investigators and all their information will be transmitted. "

The shortcomings of this theory.

It wants to "be believed. To believe with all our strength that Maddie is alive! Believing that parents are not guilty. The runway pedophile network has often been put forward in this matter by all defenders of the parents. Only many loopholes exist in this theory. So we ask our readers not to get out too fast. Do not start the quarter turn in a mad hope. It is not a question here of whether parents are guilty or not, or even whether such networks exist, or if they have the resources they want to lend them, but simply to put the items in their contexts in order to preserve the truth.

We already know that the trail network has been studied in ways very serious and very pushed by the Portuguese secret service. These services are quite competent in the matter. The Portuguese are no less intelligent than you and me, and their secret services are as effective as the majority of those in other countries of the EEC. There are, in fact, two "large" pedophile networks in Portugal. Both networks are under very strict surveillance. What critics do not see is an argument that could be used against Portugal because the two networks in question are very small in relation to those existing in the UK, France, Belgium, the Netherlands .. . The assumption of the network has been eliminated because its probability is so low that it is almost non-existent.

Another "loophole" in the theory: Metodo 3 states, "according to News of the World," that their investigation had nothing to do with the ongoing investigation of Madeleine McCann. We should explain how can investigate Madeleine McCann without that have nothing to do with the investigation Madeleine McCann? ? ? ? On the other hand, any investigation on private crimes and / or crimes subject to a formal investigation by the police is strictly prohibited! How then, detectives Portuguese could give the green light to this project going as well as against their own law? In addition, we know for sure that some private detectives were arrested in this case. A Morocco and another in Spain. On the other hand, "News of the World" presents in his article society Metodo 3 as "lead agency in searches for missing persons." But on the company's site Metodo3, the latter as it specializes in insurance, financial matters, fraud, mutual societies, falsifications and protections information. We are far from the search for missing persons. We do not doubt the professionalism of the company Metodo 3 or made them, like anyone, can make or devise theories, but we remain more cautious than their véracités and how some would like to press do THE truth!

"Arguidos" until May, and perhaps beyond!

Kate and Gerry may have to wait nearly a year before having access to details of the case. It was initially planned that they have access to the file has them on November 14, so they can begin to prepare their defense. But police reportedly asked the judge to extend the deadline because the police would not have any results. They were still waiting in other, the listing of calls given and received by the couple and their friends. Listing asked their British counterparts for some time but to no avail. On the other hand, the police has yet to ask some friends who were at Tapas Bar in the evening when Madeleine has disappeared. If the judge, Pedro Frias, allow the request of the police file and gives the status of "complex" (Editor's note: This will probably be the case) it will mean that parents will not have access to the file before, least me in May 2008! This represents a serious blow for McCann who had hoped that their status "arguidos" be lifted so that they can focus on the search for Madeleine.

Madeleine: British organism analyses complaints against tabloid attack on the Portuguese ambassador

London, Oct 31st (Lusa) - The comittee for complaints about the British press has received approximately fifty complaints against a chronicle that was published in a tabloid where the Portuguese ambassador in the country is attacked over statements about the "Madeleine case".

"We received approximately 50 complaints from all over the world, mostly from Portuguese [citizens], but also from other nationalities", a spokesperson from the state comission [Press Complaints Comission, PCC] stated to Lusa agency.

The comission will now analyse the contents of the complaints, as well as the legislation that is invoked by the complaints, in order "to decide whether a deeper investigation is justified", the same source said.

The chronicle's content, as well as its provocative title "Oh, up yours, senor", was considered by several Portuguese to be a "scandalous offence", prompting a current of electronic mail that incited to filing a complaint with the PCC.

The authors of this appeal invoke an infraction of 1986's public law - which prohibits racial insults, or the use of terms that instigate racial hatred - and which would have hit the Portuguese through the mentioned article.

The issue has also originated dozens of comments on the tabloid's webpage, where persons from different nationalities, including several who identify themselves as British, condemn Parsons, while others agree.

The PCC intends to reach a preliminary decision concerning the procedures that are to be adopted in this case "within two or three weeks", and could then, if it decides to proceed, ask the newspaper for a clarification, the spokesperson told the Lusa agency.

If the publication is considered guilty, it may be forced to publish a retraction in its pages.

Lusa agency has tried to obtain a comment from the 'Daily Mirror' concerning the filed complaints, but there has not been an answer until now.

Ambassador Antonio Santana Carlos also declined to react to the controversy, and is considering a more formal statement, a source with the Portuguese diplomatic representation has said, while pointing to the interview with the 'Times' for further clarification about the meaning of his words.
