'Items of Interest' Lead to Dead End
Submitted by Jasmine on 15 February, 2009 - 00:04.

After revealing Friday that they had found "items of interest" in the search for missing 5-year-old Haleigh Cummings, Florida police said Saturday the clues turned out to be unrelated to the girl's disappearance.

Even so, police remain optimistic, Chief Deputy Rick Ryan of the Putnam County Sheriff's Department said in a news conference, and investigators continue to interview family members, their friends and others. Everyone is considered a potential person of interest.

Seasoned detectives on case of missing girl
Submitted by Jasmine on 15 February, 2009 - 13:26.

Florida seems to have more than its share of child abduction cases, so when Haleigh Cummings was reported missing from her south Putnam County home early Tuesday, authorities had experienced resources from which to draw as they began searching.

Putnam County sheriff's officials quickly had dogs trying to trace Haleigh's scent. They have repeatedly searched the same areas close to Haleigh's home.

They have not only talked to neighbors but in some cases have gotten permission to search property. And they are working with state officials who have firsthand experience with such cases, such as the Florida Department of Law Enforcement's Child Abduction Response Team - known as CART.

Missing 5-year-old Haleigh puts tiny Fla. town in spotlight
Submitted by Jasmine on 15 February, 2009 - 13:28.

Four days ago, few outside Putnam County, Fla., had heard of this one-traffic-light town about 40 miles south of Jacksonville.

Now, dozens of reporters and satellite trucks have converged on Satsuma, Fla., population 5,600, to tell the world one of this community's saddest stories: the disappearance of 5-year-old Haleigh Cummings.

The fair-haired girl vanished late Monday or early Tuesday as her younger brother and father's girlfriend slept in a mobile home.

Authorities continue to treat the case as an abduction but are releasing little information.

Officials press on with Haleigh search
Submitted by Jasmine on 15 February, 2009 - 19:40.

Putnam County Sheriff Jeff Hardy announced Sunday morning that they are moving the command post to Palatka to the agency's Emergency Operations Center so that they can more efficiently investigate, and coordinate, the search for 5-year-old Haliegh Ann-Marie Cummings

Hardy said the residents of River Villas, a subdivision just off Buffalo Bluff Road, have been very accepting of the crush of media and law enforment agencies that have invaded this small town 10 miles south of Palatka. But, he said, that it was time to give them their community back.

At a 4 p.m. news conference Sunday, Putnam County deputies said nothing of significance was found on the sixth day of the investigation. Chief Deputy Rick Ryan said he was confident investigators left no stone unturned in the search area near Haleigh's home.
Officials said several people have inquired about Chad Reynolds, a sexual predator who disappeared from Marion County. Ryan said although Reynolds has ties to Putnam County, investigators do not believe he is connected to Haleigh’s disappearance.

Ryan said that other than a couple of select areas, they were suspending the search and focusing more on the investigation, which was the reason the command center was moved from a trailer in Satsuma to county offices in Palatka, where more telephones and better Internet access would help the investigators processing more than 500 leads that have come in.
"We're just as enthusiastic today about it as we were on day one," Ryan said, while also said that going nearly a week without a sighting or solid lead is frustrating.
"This is not CSI. We cannot wrap it up in an hour. We wish we could," Ryan said. "These men and women are working their tails off."

Ground search for Haleigh wraps up today

SATSUMA - A search for 5-year-old Haleigh Ann-Marie Cummings expanded Sunday to an area about 10 miles south of this rural community, though no new substantial leads or information surfaced.
Ryan said they will conduct a search of two more small locations today. After that, the ground search phase of the investigation will be complete. Search crews will be placed on standby. "We're not just going to do searches for show," Ryan said, adding that Sunday was the last day EquuSearch would be used as well. Ryan said that even though the ground search may be ending, the investigation is still in high gear. He said the Sheriff's Office is working with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement and the FBI on the case.
"We assured them we are not scaling back the investigation," Ryan said, adding that the family understood and supported the move.
Even though Sheriff's Office officials would not disclose where law enforcement was searching on Sunday, about 77 searchers from numerous agencies, including the Alachua County Sheriff's Office, were located just north of Crescent City off U.S. 17. It was an area that Ryan said was law enforcement sensitive based on tips they had received. However, a thorough search produced no new clues, he said.

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Department is planning to wrap up their ground search on Monday as well. They have moved south of Satsuma, where Haleigh was last seen, and they are searching areas near Lake Como and Crescent Lake.
It is unclear why the search area has moved, but deputies said they will provide more information at the 4 p.m. press conference on Monday.

New Area Searched For Haleigh Cummings
Monday, February 16, 2009 – updated: 12:26 pm EST February 16, 2009
<snipped>
Sixty-one deputies were conducting a grid search Monday in a wooded area just a few miles from Haleigh Cumming's home in Satsuma. Deputies think the 5-year-old was taken from her bedroom last Tuesday and there's still no sign of her this afternoon.
Monday morning, nothing was found in the new search area. Deputies and police from several agencies across the area took a break around noon, but planned to continue searching for clues later in the afternoon.
Monday's search will be the last time crews will do physical ground searches in Putnam County for Haleigh. On the first day of searching, a total of 130 law enforcement officers helped search for the little girl. It's a much different scene now.
Searchers are going through the wooded area shoulder to shoulder, grid searching, looking for anything they can find. Deputies won't say why they are searching the new area or if it was a tip that led them there.

As massive manhunt winds down, Haleigh’s relatives vow to work together

Clint Van Zandt, an NBC News consultant and former FBI profiler, came on with Gregory after Crystal Cummings and said called the case “a frustrating thing.” Statistics show that after the first day a child is missing, hopes of finding her alive decrease dramatically. “They’re playing beat the clock, and right now the clock is winning,” Van Zandt told Gregory.

He said that the girl’s family are probably still suspects, but suggested that someone with a vendetta against the girl’s father could have abducted her. He said the family had been in the trailer home for only a short time, so it’s possible that someone came there looking for a former tenant.
“They just moved into that trailer about three weeks ago, so someone could even have targeted a previous resident, or it could be some unknown child predator, but that’s tough,” Van Zandt said.

SATSUMA, FL -- Sheriff deputies are back around the home of Haleigh Cummings, checking everyone going into and leaving her neighborhood.

Authorities asked drivers if they passed by at the same time last week, which is the last night Haleigh was seen.

Misti Croslin, the girlfriend of Haleigh's father, put the girl to bed around 8 p.m. on the night of February 9, one week ago. She vanished by the time Croslin got up at around 3 a.m.
