Casey Anthony case: Her fingerprints aren't on tape, WKMG reports; Jose Baez hospitalized with stomach problems -- WFTV
posted by halboedeker on Feb 17, 2009 12:26:51 PM <snipped>
FBI lab reports to be released this week will show that Casey Anthony's fingerprints are not on duct tape found wrapped about daughter Caylee's remains, WKMG-Channel 6 reported at noon today.
"That contradicts statements bounty hunter Leonard Padilla made on the Nancy Grace show last week," anchor Erick Weber said.
Weber quoted "sources inside Casey defense team" who said they are "sick of Padilla's lies and flat out want him to go away."
The WKMG anchor provided another preview of these new documents: Duct tape wasn't found in the Anthony home but it was found on a gas can.

Also at noon, WFTV-Channel 9 reported that Casey's lead attorney, Jose Baez, checked himself into a hospital last weekend for stomach tests. Anchor Barbara West said: "We asked if this was stress-related, and his spokesperson's response was that Baez is more than ready to defend Casey in court." Casey Anthony is charged with the first-degree murder of Caylee.

"Bombshell" Casey Anthony Evidence Expected To Be Released
Tuesday, February 17, 2009 – updated: 6:16 pm EST February 17, 2009

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. -- As early as Wednesday, another stack of evidence is due out in the case against Casey Anthony, but Eyewitness News has an idea of what the documents will reveal this time.
The 500 pages to be released include investigators' reports from the scene where Caylee's remains were found, the lists of all the property taken from the Anthonys' home and FBI reports on the evidence. They've been characterized as "bombshell" reports. Detectives are still investigating whether there are discernible fingerprints on the duct tape that was stretched across Caylee's mouth by the killer. There is no answer to that question at this point.

Monday, another 1,100 pages of evidence was handed over to the defense team, including transcripts of statements witnesses gave to investigators and there's more computer evidence in the case that will go public sometime soon. Eyewitness News has learned the new evidence builds a stronger case against the one who should have been Caylee's fiercest protector, her mother.

Updated: State Releases New Evidence To Anthony's Defense Team
Evidence Includes Results Of Duct Tape Tests
POSTED: 2:37 pm EST February 16, 2009

ORLANDO, Fla. -- ORLANDO, Fla. -- Attorney Brad Conway said Tuesday he will try to prepare the Anthony family for whatever news comes out of 1,100 pages of evidence released this week.
Conway said he will review the documents, which are now in the hands of Casey Anthony’s attorneys.

“We need to see what the results say,” said Conway, who represents Casey Anthony’s parents, Cindy and George Anthony. According to a source close to the investigation, test results from the FBI crime lab on the duct tape found on slain toddler Caylee Anthony's skull are in that new batch of evidence.

A spokeswoman with the state attorney's office told WESH 2 she does not plan to release this new evidence released to the public until at least midweek. Orlando defense attorney Richard Hornsby said the duct tape evidence brings the possibility of the death penalty back in to play. Hornsby said it may force Anthony’s defense attorney, Jose Baez, to "put Casey on the stand" or "consider a plea bargain."

Casey Anthony case: What about the duct tape and fingerprints?
posted by halboedeker on Feb 17, 2009 6:18:54 PM

Who has this part of the Caylee Anthony story right?
WESH-Channel 2 was trumpeting that it was first to report that new evidence to be released this week includes FBI lab tests on duct tape found over Caylee's mouth.
Are mom Casey Anthony's fingerprints on the tape?
In a report Monday, WESH suggested they are. WKMG-Channel 6 said no at noon today.
This evening, WESH's Bob Kealing said, "Our sources are telling us that the results on the duct tape especially are complicated and open to interpretation. We'll hopefully see what that means in the morning." Reporters are waiting to look at more than a thousand pages of evidence in the case against Casey Anthony, who is charged with Caylee's murder. In an earlier report, Kealing quoted a source: "This is not going to be good news for the defense." That statement is short on specifics, Brad Conway, attorney for George and Cindy Anthony, told WESH.
Kathi Belich of WFTV-Channel 9 gave a preview of the 1,100 pages of documents to be released. "We're told the new evidence builds a stronger case against the one who should have been Caylee's fiercest protector: her mother," Belich said.

Casey Anthony documents: No fingerprints on duct tape, diary is from 2003
Sarah Lundy, Amy L. Edwards and Bianca Prieto | Sentinel Staff Writer
7:01 PM EST, February 18, 2009

<snipped>
- Several bones, including human teeth and animal bones. - Numerous pieces of plastic bags - A pregnancy test - Several discarded soda cans - A broken Winnie the Pooh helium balloon - Barbie doll legs - A disposable camera - A piece of "Henkel Consumer Adhesives" duct tape, the same kind found wrapped around the skull and attached to a gas can at the house. "Evidence on the body suggests that the child's death was not accidental but an intentional act," Detective Yuri Melich wrote Feb. 5. "As of this writing, there is nothing to suggest that anyone but Casey Anthony is responsible for the death and disposal of Caylee Anthony."

10:37 a.m. After Casey Anthony was released from jail once last year, Annie Downing visited Anthony several times at her home and spent the night once. Anthony told Downing, "when this is all said and done, I have so much to tell you," Downing told investigators.
While Downing was visiting the Anthony home, Casey Anthony found Cindy Anthony on the computer using Casey's email address and signing emails with Casey's name. They argued about it, but Cindy Anthony told her daughter that "if this can find us Caylee, then you know I'm going to do whatever I can."

At one point, while visiting Anthony at home, Downing asked her about the chloroform found in the trunk of her Pontiac, but Casey Anthony explained it away, saying she had stored cleaning supplies there. Anthony also alluded to the fact that her ex-fiancé, Jesse Grund, had a key to her car and "may have done something to it after it was abandoned," the report said.

The remains were found inside of two black plastic bags and a canvas laundry bag. Detectives also found a stained Winnie the Pooh blanket, a pair of size 24 month pink and white stripe shorts, a pink size 3T shirt with the words "BIG TROUBLE comes small" written on the front and what detectives thought to be pieces of a child's pull up.

What We're Finding In Documents
Orange County investigators found a World of Disney plastic bag near the body of Caylee.
Inside the bag: Gatorade Cool Blue bottle with unknown liquid and white sediment and a syring in a wrapper inside a toilet paper roll in the bottle.

FBI Lab: Based on examinations, the pieces of duct tape found on the body and on the gas can are "comparable to one another in all physical attributes and in the chemical composition of their backing and adhesive components. Therefore, they originated from the same source roll of tape or from rolls of tape manufactured in the same manner."

In the garage of the Anthony home, investigators found a canvass laundry bag of the same make as one found on the scene.
The report goes onto say, "During a search of the southernmost outside shed, crime scene investigators located a red metal gas can with a piece of duct tape on it. On the tape within a black oval was written the work "HENKEL". This tape appears to be of the same make and brand as the tape found on the body. This gas can was photographed and collected.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- New documents released by the State Attorney's Office show the mother of missing Florida toddler Caylee Anthony hyperventilated and asked for medication when she was notified that her daughter's body had been found last December.
Evidence discovered in the woods where Florida toddler Caylee Anthony's body was found last December also match identical items found in the house where she lived with her mother and grandparents. Documents released Wednesday by the State Attorney's Office in Orlando show the same type of laundry bag, duct tape and plastic bag discovered at the crime scene also were found in the house where Caylee lived.

WFTV.com is going through the documents and thousands of images that were released. Many images and documents will be posted online as soon as possible.

The big news: investigators say the duct tape discovered on Caylee Anthony's skull at the crime scene matches duct tape stuck on a gas can at the Anthony’s' house.
Photos released show strips of silver-colored duct tape and several plastic bags scattered at the site where Caylee's remains were found. Right now reporters are digging through the information. In the hundreds of pages of discovery, photographs of the crime scene and more interviews. At least one interview with Casey Anthony's friends say she had an emotional breakdown and "wanted to be committed"

The following is a transcript of Casey Anthony's diary entry from June 21. It was released with other evidence by the state attorney's office on Feb. 18.

I have no regrets, just a bit worried. I just want for everything to work out okay.

I completely trust my own judgement & know that I made the right decision. I just hope that the end justifies the means.

I just want to know what the future will hold for me. I guess I will soon see -- This is the happiest that I have been in a very long time.

I hope that my happiness will continue to grow -- I've made new friends that I really like. I've surrounded myself with good people -- I am finally happy. Let's just hope that it doesn't change.

Documents: Mother Wanted Medication When Told Caylee's Body Found
Casey Anthony Charged With Murder In Daughter's Death
POSTED: Wednesday, February 18, 2009
UPDATED: 3:46 pm EST February 18, 2009

<snipped>
ORLANDO, Fla. -- New documents released by the state attorney's office show that Casey Anthony hyperventilated and asked for medication when she was notified that her daughter's body had been found in December.

Along with a skull and bones, investigators found a stained Winnie the Pooh blanket, pink-and-white-striped shorts and a shirt that said "BIG TROUBLE Comes Small" in the woods at the crime scene. The skull had duct tape over the mouth similar to duct tape found at the Anthony house and the remains were found in a laundry bag and plastic bag that also were similar to ones found at the home, according to the documents.
Marti Mackenzie, a spokeswoman for Casey Anthony's attorney, Jose Baez, said in an e-mail that the detectives' reports were "biased and speculative."
In a statement, Baez and defense co-counsel Linda Kenney Baden said that the brand of duct tape was the most widely sold in the United States and that it was significant that no fingerprints were found on the duct tape.

Casey Anthony case: Stations share "blockbuster details"
posted by halboedeker on Feb 18, 2009 12:34:57 PM

<snipped>
The latest details of the case against Casey Anthony filled noon newscasts Wednesday.

Anthony hyperventilated when she learned daughter Caylee's remains were found, WFTV-Channel 9 anchor Vanessa Echols said in opening the newscast. "That was just one of the many blockbuster details released today," Echols added.

On WKMG-Channel 6, Tony Pipitone said the big news was a link between the Anthony home and evidence found with the toddler's remains. Duct tape on the child's skull is "almost identical" to tape found on a gas can that was in Casey's car trunk, Pipitone said. "The circle is tightening around Casey Anthony," Pipitone said.
WKMG highlighted other connections: The cloth laundry bag holding Caylee's remains is like one in the Anthony home. A heart sticker that had been affixed to the duct tape on the child's mouth is like stickers in the home. "There is just one thing after another," Pipitone said of the latest documents released Wednesday. Pipitone said definitively there were no fingerprints on the duct tape.

Baez responds to discovery

Released February 18, 2009
Regarding discovery released by the State of Florida (State of Fl v. Casey Anthony) . . .
According to defense lawyers for Casey Anthony, the States forensic report on duct tape, plastic bags and other items is a one-sided law enforcement-generated report and is biased and speculative. It uses junk science, the kind of flawed comparative analysis that the two-year study by National Academy of Sciences released today.
This study--"Strengthening Forensic Science in the United States: A Path Forward by its Committee on Identifying the Needs of the Forensic Science Community, released today and the subject of a public briefing scheduled for 1:00 p.m. EST.
The New York Times, CBS 60 Minutes and the Washington Post have all recently weighed in on flawed forensics evidence (see below).

Defense co-counsel Linda Kenney Baden says:
Were looking closely at the NAS report. Comparative forensic analyses like those in this discovery are conducted by law enforcement agencies with no independent oversight. Our defense experts will make sure there is an objective analysis of this biased discovery. The Anthony case may be one to set a precedent in exposing the flaws in evidence that only law enforcement has tested.

Casey Anthony case: TV sees "avalanche of evidence" against her

"It all adds up to what authorities say is a damning case against Casey Anthony, the last person to see Caylee alive," WKMG-Channel 6's Tony Pipitone said.
"It's some of the most damaging evidence we've seen yet in the case against Casey," said WFTV-Channel 9 anchor Darrell Greene.

WESH's Amanda Ober explained the defense's position in a separate report. She also talked to defense attorney Mark NeJame who said the latest evidence was bad news for the defense. "What are the odds ... that all of these unique items would singularly be found at the location where Caylee was found?" he asked. "That becomes extremely challenging for the defense."(NeJame once represented George and Cindy Anthony, Casey's parents.)
WKMG and WESH focused on former Casey pal Annie Downing. "We all know Casey's done bad things," Lee Anthony told her. "Don't protect Casey." What bad things? WESH's Gail Paschall-Brown reported that Downing told detectives, "Casey has lied to everyone she knows." WESH added that Downing had insights into the Casey-Cindy relationship. "Casey told Annie that her mother was a horrible person who was trying to control her life and take Caylee away from her," Paschall-Brown reported.

"According to defense lawyers for Casey Anthony, the State's forensic report on duct tape, plastic bags and other items is a one-sided law enforcement-generated report and is biased and speculative," spokeswoman Marti Mackenzie stated in an e-mail.
"It uses 'junk science,' the kind of flawed comparative analysis that the two-year study by National Academy of Sciences released today."

Baden addressed the duct tape evidence detailed in the legal documents: "Not only is this brand of tape the most widely sold in the United States, the State is relying on comparative analysis just like comparisons exposed as flawed in the study of bullet lead in 2004. These chemical studies have put hundreds of innocent people in jail."

Caylee files reveal details about duct tape, Pooh blanket, car trunk

(CNN) -- Police believe 2-year-old Caylee Anthony was slain within days of the time she was last seen in June, and that her body was in the trunk of her mother's car for "a period of time," according to documents released Wednesday.
A supplemental report contained in those documents says that police believe Caylee was killed between June 16, the day the toddler was last seen, and June 27, based on evidence found in the car as well as evidence found with the child's body. Evidence also suggests "the body of Caylee Anthony was in the trunk ... for a period of time but removed prior to June 27, 2008," the report says.

"Evidence on the body suggests that the child's death was not accidental but an intentional act," Orange County Sheriff's Detective Yuri Melich wrote on a Feb. 5 report included among the documents. "As of this writing, there is nothing to suggest that anyone but Casey Anthony is responsible for the death and disposal of Caylee Anthony."

One friend told investigators that 22-year-old Anthony complained about having a bad relationship with her father, George Anthony. And her parents had considered getting custody of Caylee, the report said.
Anthony once caught her mother, Cindy Anthony, sending e-mails under her daughter's name. The two argued about it, but Cindy Anthony told her daughter, "if this can find us Caylee, then you know I'm going to do whatever I can."

Anthony Investigator Searched Site Where Remains Were Found

ORLANDO -- A judge ruled an interview between deputies and a private investigator for the Anthony family could be released Thursday. This transcript was kept out of the public spotlight until Judge Stan Strickland ruled the release would have little impact on the case.
More than 500 pages of forensic reports were released Wednesday in the case against Casey Anthony.
The reports from the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Orange County Sheriff’s Office document evidence collected at the crime scene and at the Anthony home.
Among some of the biggest finds; investigators said the duct tape found wrapped around the skull of Caylee Anthony matched Henkel brand duct tape stuck on a gas canister at the Anthony’s home.

Defense Reacts
Meanwhile, lawyers for Casey Anthony released this statement Wednesday. “The State’s forensic report on duct tape, plastic bags and other items is a one-sided law enforcement-generated report and is biased and speculative. It uses ‘junk science,’ the kind of flawed comparative analysis that the two-year study by National Academy of Sciences released today.”
