Ronald Cummings arrested for burglary, battery involving brother-in-law
Father of missing Haleigh Cummings booked about 1 a.m. Thursday
By Dana Treen, Amanda Winkle Story updated at 8:06 AM on Thursday, Aug. 6, 2009

Ronald Cummings, the father of missing Satsuma 5-year-old Haleigh Cummings, was booked into the Putnam County jail at 1 a.m. on a felony charge of burglary with battery.

Cummings is charged with fighting with a brother-in-law late Wednesday.

According to the Putnam County jail's booking desk, Cummings was being in lieu of $12,004 in bail set at a first appearance this morning.

Cummings was arrested about midnight.

Cummings' grandmother said the arrest came following a fight between Cummings and his wife's brother at her house.

Annette Sykes said Tommy Croslin, his father and mother came to her mobile home in Welaka at 10:45 p.m. and were trying to get Misty Cummings into their van but she refused. Sykes said Croslin hit Cummings and started a fight.

Croslin could not be reached this morning.

During the fight, Croslin went into the van and Cummings swung at him in the vehicle, Sykes said.

Croslin and his parents left and deputies arrived at Sykes' later in the night and made the arrest.

Sgt. Stacey Dowling of the Putnam County Sheriff's Office said Cummings was charged with burglary because he went into the vehicle without permission.

Cummings' daughter has been the focus of a missing child investigation since she disappeared from his residence in Satsuma Feb. 10. Investigators have nearly 5,000 leads they continue to follow in the case.

No arrests have been made in that case.

Ronald Cummings, 25, was booked into the Putnam County Jail early Thursday morning on a felony charge of burglary with assault or battery. His wife, Misty Croslin, posted bond and he was released shortly after noon.

According to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office, Cummings got into a fight with Hank Croslin Jr., the brother of Cummings' wife, at about 11:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Hank Croslin Jr. told deputies that his sister asked for her family to pick her up because she no longer wanted to be in Cummings' company. Cummings and Misty Croslin live with his grandmother, Annette Sykes, in Welaka.

Cummings refused to talk to deputies about the incident, exercising his right to remain silent, deputies said.

After searching thousands of acres and interviewing dozens of people, the sheriff's office does not have a suspect in Haleigh's disappearance. A reward of $35,000 is being offered in the case.

"We have to operate on several theories. Stranger abduction is one of them," Maj. Gary Bowling said after Haleigh's disappearance. "We are investigating every possibility. There any number of things that could have happened."

Cummings was charged with burglary with assault and booked into the Putnam County Jail. His wife posted bond and he was released shortly after noon. Courts do not list an attorney.

According to a press release from the sheriff's office, three members of the Croslin family showed up about 11:30 p.m. at the double wide mobile home in Welaka where Cummings, his wife and his grandmother, Annette Sykes, live.

A verbal dispute escalated into a fight between Cummings and Hank Croslin Jr. Misty told deputies she was hit in the face twice by Hank Jr. and her father, Hank Sr., because she was trying to break up the fight.

On the way to jail, Ronald Cummings said he wanted to press charges against Hank Croslin Jr. and Hank Croslin Sr., the sheriff's office said. Charging affidavits signed by Cummings will be reviewed by the State Attorney's Office.

Ronald Cummings, the father of missing Haleigh Cummings, was booked into the Putnam County jail.

Ronald Cummings, 25, was arrested after his wife's brother, Hank Croslin Jr., told a Putnam County deputy that Cummings was acting crazy and started "swinging on him," when Croslin and his father arrived at the home in Welaka late Wednesday. He was charged with burglary with assault or battery.

Croslin said he was hit in the head and neck several times during the altercation. When he attempted to drive away, Croslin said Cummings entered his vehicle from the passenger side and hit him again, according to a deputy's report.

Croslin said his sister Misty Cummings called him, crying, and said she no longer wanted to be at the home with her husband, the report says.

Hank Croslin Sr. also was at the scene and told the deputy that "Ronald went crazy on his son," the deputy noted in the report.

But Ronald Cummings said the Croslins showed up at his grandmother's home after Misty Cummings told them not to come, the report says. He said the Croslins approached him in an "aggressive" way. Cummings said he ended up pushing Hank Croslin Jr. when he came too close and then fought with both men. Cummings said the father held him while the son hit him, according to the report.

Misty Cummings said she had told her brother not to come over because it was late. When he did arrive, she said her brother "began a verbal altercation with Ronald." She said her brother came at her husband and then they started fighting, according to the report.

Cummings & Croslin family speak about arrest

Last Update: 6:18 pm
Over the phone, Cummings' grandmother told Action News she has no idea why her grandson was arrested.

That reaction is very different from the one Hank Croslin, Jr. and Sr. say. Hank Croslin, Jr. was fresh from the doctor with a neck brace on. He says his doctor has ordered him to wear it as a result of the fight he was in with Ronald.

“I went there to pick her up like she asked me to and when I got there her husband went off the wall,” said Croslin, Jr.

Hank Junior says Misty called him frantic on Wednesday night, begging he come pick her up from her home. When the Croslins showed up, they say Ronald was the one who greeted them, shouting curses and throwing punches.

Sykes told Action News Misty has filed a restraining order against her brother. She says she is also thinking of filing trespassing charges on both Hank Junior and Senior for coming onto her property uninvited.

Ronald Cummings Out of Jail after Burglary Arrest
Updated: 8/6/2009 8:31:01 PM

-- Misty Croslin-Cummings has posted bail for her husband who had been behind bars since early Thursday morning on burglary charges.

Deputies arrested 25-year-old Ronald Cummings after he got into a fight with Misty's brother and father.

Cummings has been charged with burglary with assault or battery. Bond has been set at just over $12,500.

Cummings made his first court appearance just hours after being booked. It was closed to the media, a move that is standard operating procedure in Putnam County.

Shortly before 1 p.m., Misty Croslin-Cummings arrived at the jail with his grandmother, Annette Sykes. The two walked out with Ronald Cummings a short time later. All 3 left in a car.

Sykes told First Coast News before driving away she's upset with the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities say the arrest of Ronald Cummings is not connected to the case of his missing daughter, and it won't distract investigators from continuing to search for her.

Family of Haleigh Cummings still hopes for her return
Crystal Sheffield, mother of missing Haleigh Cummings, says "continues to search for her daughter and is not giving up her fight."
11:58 AM EDT, August 7, 2009
<snipped>
As the six-month anniversary of Haleigh Cummings' disappearance approaches, her mother released statement today saying she continues to search for her daughter and is not giving up her fight.

The 5-year-old girl vanished from her bed in rural Satsuma in Putnam County in February.

Sunday will mark the six-month anniversary of the last time she was seen.

Authorities have classified what has happened as an abduction. In her statement, Crystal Sheffield pleaded for her daughter's return.

"Although it has almost been six months since Haleigh's disappearance, I still have hope that my daughter will come home," Crystal Sheffield said in the statement. "I will continue to do whatever it takes to keep her face out in the public for everyone to see. I ask if anyone out there knows anything to please call Crime Stoppers or your local police.

The girl's birthday is Aug. 17.

"Haleigh is about to be six years old, I am begging once again from the bottom of my heart for whoever has my sweet daughter to let her go," the statement added. "Please, she needs to be home with her family, she does not belong with anyone else. This is tearing my heart out of my chest, a part of me is missing and that is Haleigh."

WELAKA, Fla. -– 24 hours after making bail at the Putnam County Jail for a burglary with assault charge, Ronald Cummings invited Action News to his home to speak about what the next few weeks will hold for him and his family. Monday will mark six months since his daughter disappeared from their Satsuma home. One week later is Haleigh’s 6th birthday.

*snips

*Cummings says there are several things bothering him about the investigation into who took his daughter from his home. He says the thing that bothers him the most is that Sheriff’s Officers are not giving him weekly updates on how the investigation is going.

*“They don’t contact me to let me know what’s going on. You’d think once a week, or once every two weeks they’d contact me and let me know what they’re doing to try and find her. They act like they don’t do anything,” said Cummings.
Ronald tells Action News he plans on holding a candlelight vigil for Haleigh at his church on Sunday. He also says on the 17th, he and his family will launch balloons in remembrance of her birthday. Cummings says each of those balloons will have a flier with her face and information on it so wherever it pops, someone will see her face.

*Crystal Sheffield, Haleigh’s mother, is also doing something special to honor Haleigh’s birthday. Sheffield tells Action News several of her relatives will be at Riverfront Park in Palatka from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to accept donations of school supplies for Browning Pearce Elementary School, the school Haleigh attended. Only school supplies will be accepted, no cash.

The maternal family of Haleigh Cummings has planned a school supply drive in connection with her Aug. 17 birthday while her father's family is inviting people to participate in a balloon release.

Both events are aimed at raising awareness about the child's disappearance Feb. 10 from her father's home.

"Although it has almost been six months since Haleigh's disappearance, I still have hope that my daughter will come home," Sheffield said in the statement. "I am begging once again from the bottom of my heart for whoever has my sweet daughter to let her go. Please, she needs to be home with her family. She does not belong with anyone else."

Bounty Hunter William "Cobra" Staubs Wants His Freedom Back
August 07, 2009
<snipped>
According to Staubs, he got involved in the Haleigh case just weeks after the tot was reporting missing by her father, Ronald Cummings.

"Pastor Richard Grund (father of Jesse Grund – Casey Anthony's former fiancé) got a call from a woman who was involved in the case, and she told him that there was something really wrong going on in this little girl's disappearance," Staubs said in an interview with Criminal Report Daily. "She said 'we need some type of investigator. These people are poor; they don't have any money.' So Pastor Grund contacted me, and we discussed it. I asked him what he thought and he said, 'I will tell you right now; it isn't going to be easy. It is going to be dangerous, so I suggest you prepare yourself.' So I called journalist Art Harris and asked him to come down to Satsuma to go behind the scenes with me, and I headed down there to get started."

One of the people Staubs was zeroing in on was a man who was free on bail after being arrested for alleged sex abuse. The individual caught Staubs' attention because of his alleged crimes and his allegations that he had attempted to donate furniture to the Haleigh Bug Center, a place where search volunteers would meet up. According to Staubs, the man's visit to the center – where children are often present – was a direct violation of the individual's bond. Staubs says he contacted the agency that held the bond and then went to the man's house on March 20, to pick him up.

In addition to his fears, Staubs also has regrets and wonders now whether he should have ever gotten involved in the Haleigh Cummings case.

Police deny rumors that they found Haleigh's body

<snipped>
On Friday, the day Haleigh Cummings' mother announced an event to mark her missing daughter's sixth birthday in hopes of keeping the brown-eyed blonde in the news, police in Putnam County released a statement to quell a rumor that the girl's body had been found.

Lt. Johnny Greenwood, a spokesman for the Putnam County Sheriff's Office, said the department fielded three calls Friday from reporters who said they heard Haleigh was found dead, either in Putnam County or Jacksonville.

"We just want to get (the rumor) stopped before it gets to out of control," Greenwood said after sending an e-mail to media outlets stating the "rumor is false."

The reporters -- two from local outlets and the other from NBC -- did not say where they heard the rumor, he said.

Greenwood said the department reacted so quickly to the rumor because detectives did not want anyone thinking the case was closed.

"We don't want people to think this is over. They still need to look," he said. "Somebody out there knows something. Somebody out there has the one piece of information that we need to break this open."

The maternal family of Haleigh Cummings has planned a school supply drive in connection with her Aug. 17 birthday, while her father's family is inviting people to participate in a balloon release that day.

On Friday, the Putnam County Sheriff's Office issued a statement refuting a rumor that Haleigh's body had been found.

"A rumor has spread throughout our community that her body has been located. This rumor is false, and Haleigh Cummings is still missing," the Sheriff's Office reported. "In an effort to prevent rumors from impeding our investigation, Sheriff (Jeff) Hardy wants to quell these rumors so we can maintain our focus on finding Haleigh."

Meanwhile, Haleigh's father, Ronald Cummings, and his family urged people to join in a balloon release on the child's birthday that will help focus attention on the girl's case. To participate, people can print out a flier about Haleigh from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement's Missing Child Web site link, get the flier inserted into a helium-filled balloon, and then release it at 2:16 p.m. on her birthday, in honor of the child's 2:16 a.m. birth time. The family asked that the balloons' color be red or purple, Haleigh's favorite colors.

On Monday, it will be six months since the disappearance of 5-year-old HaLeigh Cummings from her Satsuma, Fla. home. Her mother, Crystal Sheffield continues to search for her daughter, and in a press release emailed to the Crime Examiner, said,

Griffis also released a statement about her granddaughter saying,

It's been an agonizing six months since my granddaughter’s disappearance and it is pure torture waking up each morning wondering where she may be… I never imagined ever having to go through such pain, but we will get up and continue in our daily task of finding HaLeigh… This is just the beginning of our efforts to find HaLeigh. Cops have few clues in case of Haleigh Cummings, girl missing for months
August 9, 2009
<snipped>
Six months ago, 5-year-old Haleigh Ann-Marie Cummings vanished after her father's girlfriend put her to bed.

The 3-foot, 3-inch girl from Satsuma hasn't been seen since.

In the ensuing months, deputies have continued a search for Haleigh that has brought few clues since the early days of the case, and her family has faced media and law-enforcement scrutiny.

"It's still an active case; we have the same investigators assigned," Lt. Johnny Greenwood of the Putnam County Sheriff's Office said. "Every tip that comes in, we investigate."

Although the Sheriff's Office still considers the Haleigh investigation to be a missing-persons case, one of the two investigators assigned to the case is a homicide detective.

Haleigh's family remains divided 6 months later
Grandmother wants peace but sees too many issues

"Snip" By Dana Treen Aug. 9, 2009
Six months into the unsolved disappearance of Haleigh Cummings, those who deeply love her believe she is still alive.

It’s about the only thing the two families closest to the investigation of her disappearance agree on.

With Monday marking the six-month anniversary of her case and next week’s arrival of her sixth birthday, her divided family has even scheduled separate events in Putnam County.
Among the events will be a school supply drop-off and a prayer vigil the families have organized independently. A balloon release is scheduled to increase awareness that she remains gone.

Ron, said he and former girlfriend Misty Croslin — have been unfairly targeted.

“There should have been more attention to Crystal’s family,” he said. “I think they should have paid more attention to everyone rather than just me and Misty.”

Ronald ,told the Times-Union the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office focus was shortsighted.
Ronald and Misty said they gave dozens of hours of interviews in February and March, including her longest, which she said occurred just before the couple were married.
“I think the longest time I was in there was eight hours,” she said.

Maj. Gary Bowling, director LE, said detectives would like to interview Cummings again but have been resisted.

The interviews with Misty Cummings have produced different pictures, he said. She was alone with Cummings’ children the night Haleigh disappeared.

“We’ve said from day one Misty’s story is absolutely filled with inconsistencies,” Bowling said.

Bowling said it takes rock-solid alibis before detectives can eliminate anyone and those have not been established. He said the best that can be done is assign degrees of suspicion to people.

“Where is the responsibility in saying somebody is not a suspect?” he said.

RC, was at work the night his daughter vanished, He has not worked since that last night shift, then lost his job because he did not stay in contact, according to the company. Cummings said he has not been able to find another job and does not know if he can go back to work.

Pressures have come from all sides and been kept alive on the Web where bloggers argue and speculate, said family members and others in the case.

Griffis said she has become accustomed to accusations.

“If there is inconsistencies that the police know about on our side of the family, they need to come question us,” she said. “I want them to question us.”

Marie Griffis, said law enforcement authorities have asked the two families not to have contact beyond the exchanges of Ronald Jr.
