Haleigh's Stepmom Says She Was Tricked
Posted: 1:25 pm EDT September 2, 2009
Updated: 2:59 pm EDT September 2, 2009
<snipped>
The stepmother of missing Putnam County girl Haleigh Cummings says she was tricked into taking a polygraph test that EcuuSearch's Tim Miller said she failed.

Miller said Misty Cummings failed a polygraph and a voice analysis test. He says Misty came to him and asked to take the tests.

However, Misty Cummings denies that allegation and says Miller forced her to go on the record.

"He told me if I didn't take them tests that he wasn't going to look for Haleigh, so that's why I took them tests, because I don't want no one to stop looking for Haleigh," she said.

The 5-year-old girl hasn't been seen since February.

Last weekend, police in Putnam County reopened the search with the help of EquuSearch.

Haleigh Cummings' Mother Donates To Equusearch
Crystal Sheffield Says She Supports Group's Involvement In Search
POSTED: 11:28 am EDT September 2, 2009
UPDATED: 12:01 pm EDT September 2, 2009

The mother of missing child Haleigh Cummings said she supports the involvement of Equusearch in the search for her daughter and has made a donation to the Texas-based volunteer search group.

Crystal Sheffield said she and her family made the donation in Haleigh's name and encourage others to do the same.

"I still wake up every morning wondering if someone will call and tell me that Haleigh has been found and that she wants to see me. All I want is Haleigh back home. I would like to thank Tim Miller for trying to help find my daughter," Sheffield said in a press release.

There has been recent controversy involving Equusearch, its director Tim Miller and the Cummings. Miller said he invited the Cummings to Orlando to clear their heads. While they were there he said Misty Cummings -- who had fallen under suspicion in the girl's disappearance -- asked to take voice analysis and polygraph tests in order to help find Haleigh and clear her name, which she failed. The Cummings, however, said that Miller tricked them, took away their cell and pressured Misty Cummings to take the tests.

Investigators now have those test results. They said they show Misty Cummings is withholding information.

The Ties That Bind Caylee Anthony, Haleigh Cummings, and Cobra
Wednesday, Sep. 2 2009 @ 10:48AM
<snipped>
This week's New Times cover story chronicles the adventures of a Fort Lauderdale bail bondsman, William Staubs, AKA "Cobra," who fell into a world of trouble when he started searching for a missing 5-year-old from Putnam County, Haleigh Cummings. But before he began looking for Haleigh, Cobra briefly searched for perhaps the most famous missing child in Florida: Caylee Anthony.

Cobra worked on the case only briefly, when he followed up on a tip that Caylee had been seen in Glades County -- a tip that didn't pan out. Then, this past February, Cobra happened to be near Orlando chasing a drug dealer. He heard about a memorial service for Caylee involving fellow bounty hunter Leonard Padilla and decided to attend, curious to see how the dramatic case had turned out.

At the memorial service, Cobra met Richard Grund, whose son, Jessie, was once engaged to marry Casey Anthony. Grund soon hired Cobra to do some investigative work to expose the people who had tried to implicate Jessie in Caylee's murder.

Meanwhile, several hours before the service, Haleigh was said to have disappeared from the bedroom of her family's trailer home in Satsuma, a rural, spitball town north of the Ocala National Forest. Camera crews immediately descended on the town and were already drawing comparisons between the two missing-child cases. A woman who advocates for missing children asked Richard Grund to recommend a private investigator to search for Haleigh, and Grund says he referred her to Cobra.

So Cobra left for Satsuma in March, launching a search that would threaten to end his career. "Craziest s*** I ever done in my life," he says now. To read more about his adventures, check out "Cobra's Last Stand."

Jaycee, Caylee, and Haleigh: Missing Children With Strange Parallels
Wednesday, Sep. 2 2009 @ 4:24PM
<snipped>
Aside from their eerily similar first names, there are compelling parallels between the missing-child cases of Jaycee Dugard, Caylee Anthony, and Haleigh Cummings. Each time, investigators have focused on the child's parents. And each time, they've had wildly different results.

Jaycee Dugard's stepfather came under police scrutiny when the 11-year-old went missing 18 years ago. Carl Probyn took lie detector tests, and was repeatedly questioned about seeing Jaycee get whisked away in a car driven by two strangers. But then last week, Jaycee was found alive, after being held captive for 18 years by convicted sex offender Phillip Garrido, who is accused of kidnapping and raping her.

Meanwhile, Caylee's mother, Casey Anthony, has been charged with first-degree murder. Her 2-year-old daughter's remains were found in the woods last December near the family's Orange County home.

Finally, the 17-year-old woman who was babysitting Haleigh the night she disappeared from her trailer home in Satsuma is being targeted by Putnam County sheriff's officials, who say she continues to "hold important answers in the case."

Focusing on the role of the parents in these cases is a wise, and not-surprising strategy. But it will be interesting to see if any of the other cases turn out like Jaycee's, with a stranger suspect that no one...suspected.

Video of Cobra's Takedown of an Alleged Child Molester
Wednesday, Sep. 2 2009 @ 12:04PM
<snipped>
This week's New Times cover story, "Cobra's Last Stand," Fort Lauderdale bail bondsman William Staubs, AKA "Cobra," gets arrested for false imprisonment during his search for missing 5-year-old Haleigh Cummings. The confrontation that caused all the trouble was caught on video by independent, Atlanta-based journalist Art Harris.

In the video, Cobra is trying to revoke the bond on Daniel Snodgrass, a 55-year-old from Putnam County who had been arrested for capital sexual battery two years earlier, accused of sexually abusing a 9-year-old girl who came to him for unicycle lessons. Cobra suspected Snodgrass might have been involved in Haleigh's disappearance, because he had been seen trying to donate furniture to a center that Haleigh's family set up to look for the child.

There's a dispute, however, as to whether Cobra was authorized by an insurance agency to revoke Snodgrass' bond. In the video, you can see Cobra cuffing Snodgrass, then releasing him, after receiving a call from the head of the insurance agency, C.E. Parrish.

Tip Leads to $35,000 to Get Haleigh Back
Created: 9/2/2009 4:35:29 PM
Updated: 9/2/2009 4:39:33 PM
<snipped>
Texas Equusearch expects to receive a gift of $35,000 in hopes of finding Haleigh Cummings, who has been missing for more than six months.

Director Tim Miller sought out the money from a sponsor and will put it in an account.

Miller says this stems from a tip that said Haleigh's father Ronald needs $35,000 to get his daughter back.

But, Ronald Cummings' attorney says this is misinformation, and says Ronald does not know where his daughter is, and the money will not bring her home.

First Coast News is continuing to follow this developing story.

VIDEO: Miller Says Haleigh's Father Doubts Wife's Story

$35K put up for girl's return
Thursday, September 3, 2009 3:27 AM EDT
<snipped>
A Texas businessman has offered $35,000 in response to a claim that Haleigh Cummings could be found for that price.

The money, in the form of a check to Haleigh's father, Ronald, was offered Wednesday by Cypress, Texas, businessman Roy Moffitt, according to Tim Miller, director of the Texas-based search organization EquuSearch.

Miller said the figure was cited in a voice mail he received Tuesday from Cummings' father-in-law Hank Croslin.

In the voice mail, Croslin says Cummings had said he could get Haleigh "back" if he had $35,000, Miller said.

Miller described Moffitt as "a very, very kind person" who backs the search organization. Miller said Moffitt wrote on the check that it was payable only upon Haleigh's return.

"He told me, 'I pray to God that Ronald Cummings has the opportunity to cash this check,'" Miller said.

Moffitt also offered to bring cash to Florida if it would mean the 6-year-old girl could be found, Miller said.

"How do you put a dollar amount on it," Miller said, "if there's a chance that little girl is alive out there?"

"Our goal is just to have Haleigh's picture on TV every day," Terry Shoemaker said. "Even if it involves negative publicity about Misty, it puts Haleigh's face on TV."

Shoemaker began representing Cummings about a week ago when Cummings approached the St. Augustine attorney to defend him from pending charges involving a reported fight with his in-laws.

"Charges have not been filed yet, but obviously our role there is to get the charges dropped before they make a filing decision," Shoemaker said.

Croslin-Cummings has proclaimed that Equusearch founder Tim Miller tricked her into taking a polygraph, a voice analysis and undergoing hypnosis, but Miller said it was her decision to take the tests in effort to clear her name.

"He (Cummings) doesn't have much faith in the way that the polygraph was done or the results of the polygraph," Shoemaker said. "He believes what Misty has told him regarding anything that she might know, and until he gets valid proof or some facts that lead him to believe differently, he's going to stand by her - she's his wife."

Shoemaker said Cummings will do anything is takes to find his daughter, even if it means undergoing another polygraph.

"I know the investigation is continuing. We've met with law enforcement in the past couple of days and we hope to meet with law enforcement again soon to help shed any light on Haleigh's disappearance," Shoemaker said. "We will do anything we can to help resolve this.

Haleigh Cummings is Missing: Misty Croslin Cummings' Story Falling Apart?
New Detectives Brought in and New Details Emerge in the Haleigh Cummings Case
September 02, 2009
<snipped>
New details emerging out of Satsuma, Florida, and the Haleigh Cummings missing person case reveal that something may be about to break and that Ronald Cummings, the 5-year-old's father, may be the one that sends authorities in the right authorities in the right direction. The day after Ronald Cummings told Nancy Grace that he supported his wife (she and Ronald wee married in March) and wanted to focus on finding his daughter, Cummings has revealed to yet another person that he does not trust Misty's account of the night Haleigh went missing, despite public statements otherwise. He had appeared on HLN's "Nancy Grace" to talk about his wife's having failed "miserably" another polygraph test. Haleigh Cummings disappeared in February, nearly seven months ago. And from the very beginning, the babysitter, Misy Croslin, the last person to have seen little Haleigh Cummings before she went missing, has been the center of the investigation.

Nancy Grace reported Wednesday that a new team of detectives had been brought in to put "fresh eyes" on the Haleigh Cummings case. Ronald Cummings voluntarily sat through several hours of questioning at the Putnam County Sheriff's Office. Authorities were interested in the timeline that led up to Haleigh Cummings' disappearance, from the time she got off the bus to the time that she went missing. Putnam County law enforcement were especially interested in several phone conversations that had reportedly taken place between Ronald Cummings and Misty Croslin, his live-in teenage girlfriend.

Given the inconsistencies that have existed in Misty Croslin's accounts (plural because she has given several conflicting answers as to events, including the recent disclosure that there were even more people at the trailer the day Haleigh Cummings disappeared than she had previously admitted to), the Misty Croslin Cummings connection to the disappearance of the child seems to grow stronger. That she may have done something to the child is a possibility that authorities are considering, but they also are considering the possibility that Misty Croslin wasn't in the trailer the entire night, pointing to the part of the story where Misty claims to have have found a brick propping open the back door (which Ronald Cummings said was always kept locked and that he had locked himself before going to work that afternoon).

Tim Miller's statement that Ronald Cummings felt his wife Misty Cummings knew more about his daughter being missing than she was saying is not the first such statement. Back in late March, Ronald Cummings allegedly told bounty hunter William "Cobra" Staubs that he married Misty Croslin to keep her close because he believed she knew something about what happened to his daughter.

So why go on "Nancy Grace" Tuesday night -- not to mention several other interviews -- and state that he supported and believed that Misty Croslin Cummings knew nothing more than what she was telling? Perhaps Ronald Cummings was playing a waiting game, waiting for the moment Misty Croslin made a slip so he could give the information to the police.

Tim Miller of Equusearch said that he had received a call from Ronald Cummings mother in mid-August. She had told him that Ronald and Misty were not speaking to each other and that Misty Croslin Cummings was making a lot of secret phone calls. She believed that Misty was about to "break."

And perhaps she is.

It would seem that Misty Croslin Cummings has trouble keeping her stories straight...

The mother of Haleigh Cummings, the Putnam County girl who vanished from her home in February, is asking people to support a search group that has assisted in the hunt for the child.

Texas EquuSearch has been involved in the search for Haleigh, with members scouring woods near her home in south Putnam County for clues.

In a statement released Wednesday, Haleigh's mother, Crystal Sheffield, and maternal grandmother, Marie Griffis, said they appreciated EquuSearch founder Tim Miller's dedication to the search for the girl.

The family made a donation to the group and asked others to make similar donations in Haleigh's name.

"I still wake up every morning wondering if someone will call and tell me that Haleigh has been found and that she wants to see me. All I want is Haleigh back home," Sheffield said. "I would like to thank Tim Miller for trying to find my daughter."

Want to know more about the story of missing Haleigh Cummings?

HLN's Nancy Grace will explore the case at 8 and 10 p.m. Monday. The program is a combination of new and old material, an HLN spokeswoman said.

Grace's Web page offers this preview: "What happened to the missing 5-year-old tot, abducted from her own bed, with her teen babysitter & brother in the same room! Cops now call the babysitter's story 'sketchy' & announce they believe Haleigh was not taken by a stranger. What does the babysitter know? Exclusive interviews with key players, including Haleigh's dad and his new wife, the babysitter!"

All those exclamations! I can hear Grace's voice.

Haleigh Cummings is Missing: Stepmother Misty Croslin-Cummings Has "Consistently Inconsistent" Story
Misty Croslin Cummings was Last Person to See Haleigh Cummings Alive
September 03, 2009
<snipped>
So far there have been no breaking leads in the Haleigh Cummings disappearance case. The recent Jaycee Dugard case reminds parents not to give up hope. Statistically, however, the outlook is not bright for the missing six-year-old. Roughly 6% of all child abductions by strangers result in murder. While that still gives Haleigh Cummings over 90% chance of still being alive, the fact that she has been missing since February is particularly troubling.

Although not named a suspect, Putnam County Sheriff's Major Gary Bowling states the following about Croslin-Cummings: "we factually know that she is consistently inconsistent and we need some factual exactness about her activities the night before Haleigh disappeared until the morning when she was reported missing."

Since Misty Croslin-Cummings's account of Haleigh Cummings's last night is vague, authorities are left chasing empty leads. In fact, the Putnam County Sherriff's department has chased down over 4,000 leads in this missing person case.

Everyone is desperate to find Haleigh Cummings. Tim Miller and Equusearch have been working diligently to find and follow leads for the case. It is Miller and EquuSearch's involvement that lead to Misty Croslin-Cummings's hypnosis and lie detector tests. It is the hope of everyone that the firm can help locate Haleigh Cummings, and that they find her alive and well.

Haleigh Update: VIDEO: Dad's Timeline Solidifies
Posted: Saturday, 05 September 2009 7:50AM
<snipped>
More information on the timeline of the father of missing 6-year-old Haleigh Cummings of Satsuma the night she disappeared has been made public.

During the taping of Friday night's Nancy Grace Show on HLN, I was guest along with Ronald Cummings' mother Teresa Neves and Ronald's attorney Terry Shoemaker among others. Nancy asked me about the reported argument between Ronald and his then-babysitter--now wife Misty over the telephone the evening Haleigh vanished. I told her it took place at about 8:30pm while Ronald was at work.

Earlier I had reported that my sources close to the investigation told me Ronald goes to work at about 4pm and returns home after 3am.

Nancy Grace asked Ronald's attorney Friday night some questions about his timeline on February 9, 2009. Terry Shoemaker said on national television that Ronald picked up Haleigh at the bus stop at 3:30 and Iitt takes him 19 minutes to go from home to work at PDM. Shoemaker then cleared up a significant grey area stating that Ronald usually gets to work about 45 minutes or so early for his 5pm shift at PDM, putting him at work around 4pm but not actually working until 5pm.

Both investigators and PDM officials say Ron was at work the whole shift.

Tim Miller, Director of Texas Equusearch--who arranged for Misty's recent polygraph that she failed, also asked Ronald about his timeline a couple of weeks ago in the law office of Orlando attorney Mark Nejame. Miller account concurs with that of law enforcement officials. Miller also states that Ronald was seen on tape at a convenience store buying beer, cigarettes and peanuts just after 3am February 10, 2009.

Misty maintains that she is telling the truth about what happened to little Haleigh when she disappeared from her home in Satsuma.

Authorities say the side door to the trailer that Ronald Cummings lived in with his children and then-girlfriend Misty was propped open with a cinderblock.

The newspaper said Timothy Croslin, the brother of Haleigh's stepmother, and his wife were questioned about the missing 6-year-old after a possible sighting of the girl at an area Wal-Mart. Timothy Croslin lives in the area.

The published report said the couple was interviewed at the South Yarmouth State Police barracks. The police chief said the couple was cooperating with Florida investigators but did not comment on why the couple was questioned.

Haleigh's grandmother, Annette Sykes, spoke to WJXT-TV in Jacksonville on Monday after hearing about the report.

"There's always hope," Sykes said. "They have enough cameras in them Wal-Mart stores and maybe they got one that got a picture of her. And if they did, if they actually have a picture of her, then we can get happy. We may all have to go up there and tear that town apart."

On Monday, a reporter for the Cape Cod Times said her newspaper received a tip to ask state police about the questioning of Croslin and his wife.

"The sergeant there on duty that day said, 'Yes, in fact, the Florida county sheriff's department is here interviewing a local family, and that's really all I can say,'" reporter K.C. Myers said. "And he referred all other questions to the district attorney's office."

The district attorney refused to elaborate, saying his office was assisting the Florida detectives.

The Putnam County Sheriff's Office declined to detail the agency's reasons for weekend interviews in the disappearance of 6-year-old Haleigh Cummings.

"It has been the position of our investigative team not to release the details of interviews," said Sheriff's Office spokesman Lt. Johnny Greenwood in a statement released Tuesday. "I can confirm that investigators traveled to Massachusetts to conduct interviews in this case."

Greenwood reported the interviews were "totally unrelated" to an alleged sighting of Haleigh at a Massachusetts Wal-Mart.

Croslin-Cummings made statements that her brother had been acting strangely after the girl vanished.

EquuSearch reported after the tests that Croslin-Cummings had failed them.
