"It certainly appears that the culprit left the house in Sonia's car and then returned to downtown Orangeville with her car," Pritchard said, adding that police believe the person they are looking for is familiar with the Orangeville area.

Police say they are looking for one individual, who acted alone and is someone who knows or is familiar with Varaschin, but that she may not necessarily know.

There is also a video at this link. It includes a statement from Sonia's family, read by LE. I found it very touching and I am heartbroken for them.

There are a number of other comments that come out from LE during the Q&A session after the press conference.

They mention that there is nothing in Sonia's background that would indicate that there was anything that would have put her at risk.

The believe that the perp (and they clearly believe it is only one person) is familiar with the area.

When asked about the timeline and sounds that the neighbours heard, they indicate that they don't have the timeline pinned down, but that the sights/sounds reported by neighbours are an important part of the investigation.

I'm getting the feeling that this might be someone who she was casually friendly with.....a clerk at a store or coffee shop?? A mechanic at the local garage? Someone who immediately was attracted to her and then 'stalked' her.

If I recall correctly, didn't Sonia move into her townhouse just a few months ago? Has she been living in Orangeville longer than that? What local retail and service establishments did she frequent? Could it have been a neighbour?

Lots of questions. No answers. :(

Just a thought,if she just moved in, perhaps she had some work done on her place. On the other hand, maybe she moved there to get away from a situation that caught up with her.
The whole thing sounds messy and rash,if it happened around 3 in the morning, seems like teenager or young adult behaviour.

Global News reports that they closed off a road in Orangeville and they think a piece of fabric was found. They will keep us posted for any breaking news.

The vigil has been cancelled.

In this video, they say clothing was found, a little more than 10 Km north of Sonia's home. At the 1:18 mark they say both the Toronto LE and OPP mounted units are helping in the search. They show search of corn field rows (corn stalks are about 6 feet tall).

I found that home listed with a realtor in May, so perhaps that is when she bought it.

After seeing the blood smears on the bumper I envisioned a blood soaked perp reaching into the trunk and his clothing (pants) touching the bumper and creating the blood smears. I am still confused about the blood "spatters" in the car however if she was deceased at her townhome first and wrapped in sheets then placed in the car.

What I don't get is why didn't the perp just leave her in the home. The perp drives her car parks it literally downtown and leaves it with the trunk and doors open. The perp took a huge risk having her in it at that time of morning.

Blood-soaked bed sheets were taken from Sonia Varaschin’s home and investigators believe they may have been used to conceal her body.

“We’re looking for a beige or cream-coloured fitted sheet and comforter,” Det. Insp. Mark Pritchard said at a news conference on Friday.

“The culprit left the scene covered in a significant amount of blood, both on his footwear and clothing,” Pritchard said.

I doubt they will find them, if the suspect is smart, he/she will have burned the sheets along with his/her clothing. I notice on one of the pictures previously posted showing the blood on her car, it looks like someone's hand smeared the blood on the back, so I'm going to assume that she was placed in the trunk - that's JMO

I figured the perp was covered in blood just from the way the crime scene was described. Probably lives alone because hopefully a sane person would call LE if someone they knew came home covered in blood.

ITA Ruby, I have been thinking the same thing. He took a big risk also while removing her from her house and 'loading' her into her car. He was lucky that nobody saw him. Why didn't he leave her at her house? Could it be that she was still alive and he tried to take her to a hospital, then later realized it was too late and only then decided to dispose of her? It appears he didn't make any attempts to clean the crime scene neither.

I know it is strange isn't it. Just the description of the crime scene, it seems like a personal murder, a lot of anger and rage. So senseless this kind of violence.

clothing or fabric was found & the vigil is cancelled

:(

thats most likely is not a good sign...*sighs* seems like everyday its a new case ect

I thought it was very odd that BOTH of the car's front doors were open.

I know, why not dump the car where there was less chance it would be discovered as quickly. Then leave everything open to draw more attention to it.
Bizarre really.

I agree. Video cameras are probably on a lot of buildings in the downtown core. Not a bright person, obviously panicky and off the wall. I wonder if it was a psychiatric patient?

Varaschin moved into a quiet Spring Street townhouse complex about three years ago, coming from Bolton.

Darlene explained Varaschin chose to live in Orangeville because she knew people here — following a “bit of a stint” working at Headwaters Health Care Centre — and the community’s proximity to her hometown.

“She loved living here,” Darlene said. “She thought it was fantastic here. She would be walking about town ... to the farmers’ market or, she’s a knitter, to whatever that yarn place is on Broadway.

“She loved the fact that she could walk everywhere” and felt safe doing so, Darlene said. “We all felt safe in town, until now.”

“She had a wide variety of friends everywhere — her skiing friends, her nursing friends and her cycling friends.”

Also, check out photo #6 in the gallery....a lovely photo of Sonia in her nursing capacity.
