Wedding plans?

Which movie to go to?

I really don't want to go to her past relationships but that could be a possibility.

Here's my list. GUESSES ONLY. (I'm just thinking of what would make two people get so mad that one throw's her glasses at the dash and takes off. Supposedly....)

1. He found out she was still talking to, or seeing her old military boyfriend
2. He found out she had once been pregnant by her old military boyfriend
3. She was pregnant again and he didn't want her to keep the baby
4. She found out he was seeing someone else
5. She or he called off the wedding

Again, just guesses. I have nothing to base this on. I have, however, seen cases where a woman trys to break off a relationship with a man and ends up dead. "If I can't have you, no one will!"
Not saying this is the case here, just pondering all the possibilities of why they were fighting.

I can see number two, three, four and five but for some reason not the first one. Because of her family being strict I would think that she would be faithful to the BF/F. I know what you are saying about guesses though, I'm thinking it has something to do with her past or her campus life.

As for working for my dad? He had his own manfacturing plant on SI. I worked there only one summer. That is were I started dating my BF/F. I went to college to become a teacher. When I student taught I got beat up by 2 boys in the third grade which ended up with me in the hospital. Nice middle class neighborhood too. I ended up working for the worlds largest department store then worked my way up the ranks to Asst. buyer then I jumped ship and went to work for one of the manfacturers I dealt with.

As far as SL was concerned I don't think other than the jobs we had together that she ever worked. Well, at a paid job that is. Her hobbies and music really kept her busy.

Wow, between having his own business and that ice cream scooter story, your dad sounds like a pretty cool guy :)

I remembered you telling us you were a buyer, so I assumed a business or marketing degree. That's just awful about your student teaching experience. You expect that with some city schools today, but I don't remember hearing that sort of thing in those days. And to have come that far with a degree then not use it -- that must have been a bit of a crisis for you.

So, forgive me if you told us this already -- you say SL was busy with hobbies (mostly animal care?) and music -- regarding the music, did she play with a band or orchestra? I think I may be blurring what you said about SL's and the BF/F's musical interests in my mind. Did SL play with the SI orchestra? Any other bands? What other musical stuff did she do? Did she sing? Give lessons to kids? In what ways did music keep her busy?

MMQC –I am assuming this, but do you recall if the pool party in late August was comprised of mixed company / guests? Were the guests from her sorority, or the band, or biology department at school? -- Or a mix? --Were there other friends there apart from Wagner besides you?

Does that last line say "...will not handle?"

Yep! We have no idea why it would say that, though.

I forgot to tell you guys that I asked a retired NY detective about the notation. He didn't think it was unusual because missing adult cases where there's no glaring evidence of a crime routinely are turned over to the missing persons unit.

I wonder if he would know anything about the reference to "publicity: No" section. Thanks for the info.

Animals, salt water tank, art and music. She was active in the band at college. Practise always and football games. She was not in the SI band. Did not give lessons to kids. She liked art too. I might have said this before but she sketched a portrait of me with a pencil from my HS yearbook photo. To this day is still hangs in my home. Through the years there were several types of birds in her room, gerbils and hamsters. Three dogs, a cat and various yard animals. Ducks, geese, and a turkey. Can't remember if there were any chickens. They all kept very busy with the animals and the vegetable garden.

BBM: MMQC, I initially chuckled over this part of your response, but I keep coming back to it. I guess it wouldn't be the first time that something seemingly trivial served as the pin on the grenade. Is that what you mean? Or is this the kind of thing -- the choice between, say, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and Jaws -- that tended to set SL off? Are you saying you could you see her throwing her glasses on the dashboard and storming out of the car over a disagreement about the choice of which movie to see?

BBM1: I don't recall you mentioning it before ... what a wonderful keepsake.

BBM2: By "they all," do you mean the whole family? Makes me wonder if one of the parents grew up on a farm (though lots of people grew their own veggies and had little kitchen "farmettes" in those days).

I had pictured SL in the Wagner (and maybe even HS) marching band. IMO, a shy kid's haven. My daughter was in one, and I have worked closely with a local high school over the years in various capacities. What I've seen is that the kids in marching band tend to be close-knit. IMO, many sign up feeling geeky and shy, but they quickly become a quirky little "family." I would wager she made good friends here. JMO

I am just now catching up-away since Friday at a quilter's retreat. I wondered about what Bessie said regarding the notation on the missing person report-does that mean that the person initially receiving the report likely turned it over to a missing person unit and they did...nothing?

SI has a nice music scene - everything from opera to chamber and some beautiful outdoor venues…

Below is a link to list of SI music scene venues and groups: Richmond County Orchestra, South Shore band, and Wagner College:

“Wagner College has ensembles devoted to various musical styles — a concert band, jazz ensemble, guitar ensemble and four choirs — all of which perform regularly throughout the year at the college, local churches and at Snug Harbor Cultural Center, Livingston. In addition, Wagner’s opera workshop performs on the campus twice each year, and the music department occasionally hosts guest performers for recitals and lectures.”

A mix of band, and sorority. No other outside guests to my recollection.

The movie could have been a catalyst for a bigger fight if anything was festering so to speak. You know you start a fight about something else entirely and you end up bring up past history and of course FAMILY into the fight. Who have nothing to do with it at all.

Maybe it was over the wedding plans? Which would have brought any couple to fighting. Many engagements were broken over disputes over wedding plans.

Just not sure there ever was a fight. MOO!

She was in both HS and College marching bands.

I am totally with you on this opinion. I am of the same one.

OH YES, everyone was involved with the garden and the animals.

It has been just a year since I re-posted this case on Websleuths. There certainly have been a lot of posts since that time - 12 pages of them in this year alone. I had previously posted the case in 2010 and that thread had 46 pages of postings in less than two years!

With all the interest in Sylvia's case, hopefully some resolution can be found.

Here is a link to the Doenetwork on Sylvia's case which has some photos of her:

MMQC, what kind of seaside/harbor culture existed on SI in the 1970s? I see SI is surrounded by water, but I really know nothing about what that meant for residents or tourists.

In terms of beaches, were their "shore" type restaurants, arcades, night clubs, boardwalks (both the kind you just walk on, and the kind that feature rides, games of chance, frozen custard, etc.) like there were/are here in Jersey?

In terms of harbor culture, were there marinas/moorings, sport fishing boats, ship builders/repair places, commercial fishing operations?

And in terms of you, SL, and your circles of family/friends, did you know people who lived or worked in these worlds? Did you or they frequent these places?

Hi Richard, do you have a link to the thread you posted in 2010, I didn't see it at the bottom of the page. Think it would be interesting to those 46 pages.

MMQC, do you have any pictures of Sylvia that you can share with us? I also wonder if it's possible that LE or someone that is experienced, can do a progression sketch of her to show us what she would look like now? Just guessing, but since LE contacted you in 2010 they might be open to you calling them and asking questions. I have tried to talk to LE on other cases, but unless you are media, family, friend, etc. they tend to "talk" down to you and never answer your calls.
