Thanks Summer Breeze and Texas Mist for the info to read about Kayla. This is not far north of me so I'd like to get involved in Sleuthing her case. Maybe we can do some good old fashioned brainstorming.

She's been missing a long time ~ almost a year :countsheep:

PS: She frequented Cowlitz County which is Oregon, towns of St Helens and Scappoose and then Ranier. I'll grab a map.

Dispatchers gave police the Longview address associated with the cellphone. Police went there and spoke with Jackson Michael O'Dowd, 18, Longview.

It is reported that this young man made a statement in May that he took her, but he is known to "make things up".

Another year has passed since 18-year-old Kayla Croft-Payne was last seen April 28, 2010, leaving a friend’s house in Cowlitz County. The friend reported her missing a few days later.

Three years since she went missing, Croft-Payne’s family has partnered with Vancouver-based nonprofit National Women’s Coalition Against Violence and Exploitation to find explanations for the disappearance.

“We won’t let her become a cold case,” her aunt, Karen Hinton said. “We need people to tell us what they know.”

Hinton has found a spark of hope for answers as she’s begun to question who was the photographer her niece met online who arranged to take pictures of her so she could create a modeling portfolio.

She found the potential clues simply by looking at Croft-Payne’s Facebook page, she said.

“Her last entries are, I’m going to a photo shoot, I can’t wait to get my portfolio done,” Hinton said.

Early last month, NWCAVE’s Michelle Bart contacted numerous members of the press to describe how Croft-Payne is one of three young women around the country who posted photos and information about themselves on the same modeling website and left for modeling only to never return home.

Bart is concerned certain photographers may be using the ModelMayhem website to prey upon women.

Bart says she learned Croft-Payne went missing after she went to meet with a photographer she met there. Hinton said she’s passed the information to the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office and a detective has promised to follow those leads.

She’s encouraged, but at the same time discouraged it wasn’t investigated previously.

“I don’t know how this was overlooked by the police for so long,” Hinton told the gathering yesterday. “It’s beyond me.”

CHEHALIS – Detectives ran into somewhat of a dead end when they followed up a family member’s lead that the 2010 disappearance of Lewis County teen Kayla Croft-Payne may be related to a photographer she met with on a website called Model Mayhem, the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office said today.

Detectives are combing an area near Winlock, Wash. after several tips that a missing teen’s body was thrown down a well on the property.

Kayla Croft-Payne (pictured) was reported missing in May of 2010 after friends and family had not seen her for several days. She was 18 years old at the time of her disappearance and was described as a white woman with blue eyes and brown hair.

Authorities continue search for vanished locals

[snip]

Karen Hinton knows too well how agonizing it can be to wait for a break like the one in Misty’s case. Her teenage niece Kayla Croft-Payne was last seen in a Toutle trailer park in April 2010. Hinton, a Portland resident, has been doing whatever she can to keep the search for Kayla alive ever since.

Before her disappearance, Kayla had fallen into a community of drug-users that spanned roughly from Tacoma to Longview. Because many of the people who could know what happened to Kayla have chaotic, drug-addled lives, the case has often been hindered by rumors, false leads, and a lack of information, Hinton said. Some people who associated with Kayla have speculated that she was killed. Others say she overdosed. But occasionally, people have hinted that she is being held against her will.

[snip]

Hinton keeps going over the rumors again and again and tries to keep Kayla’s face in the minds of anyone who might be able to help. She said the investigation was re-energized recently, when the Lewis County Sheriff’s Office assigned Detective Danny Riordan to the case.

“I don’t think Kayla disappeared because she wanted to. I think something happened to Kayla,” said Riordan, who speaks with clear conviction about his desire to find Kayla.

Recently, Riordan has made a careful effort to systematically eliminate what he describes as “red herrings” — false leads.

His efforts have included using a warrant to search records on a website that connects aspiring models with photographers, and searching a Winlock property where a tipper said they might find her body. Investigators did not find any evidence that Kayla had been there, but it helped the case by narrowing down the list of recurring rumors, Riordan said.
