Mr. VANDERWEIT is a white male, 5' 9", 178 pounds, and was last seen wearing a RED SHIRT with "Bargains" written on it, OLIVE GREEN SHORTS, and he may be riding an older model GREEN BICYCLE. MR. VANDERWEIT had no wallet, cell phone or identification and was recently discharged from a health care facility and is considered to be a danger to himself. A PICTURE of MR. VANDERWEIT is linked below.

If you may have seen MR. VANDERWEIT, please call the Rochester Police Department at 248-651-9621.

I wonder why he was discharged if he was still a danger to himself? Poor man, and poor family. I wonder if he often rode long distances on his bike, or if he stayed local?

Previous search efforts have failed, but police K-9 units did pick up on a scent at a few points during their efforts, the family says.

Organizers for the search effort will be staging in the parking lot of the Kroger Store at the corner of 25 mile and Dequindre.

The search will run throughout the morning and afternoon on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 10 and 11. Staging will begin at 8 a.m.

The only items George Vander Weit took with him, his son said, were anxiety and sleep medication. The family believes their father may have intentionally overdosed in attempt to end his life, but “I pray that’s not the case,” Randy Vander Weit said.
Rochester police have said there’s no indication of foul play in the disappearance.
Several searches were organized and a team of dogs even located George Vander Weit’s scent before the search was called off.

It seems he has been found.

The human remains recently found in Shelby Township are that of a Rochester man who disappeared nearly three years ago, authorities confirmed Tuesday.

A skull and other bones discovered Saturday in a creek near 25 Mile Road and Dequindre Road by a passerby, according to officials.

Authorities, though, do not suspect foul play in the death, which Rochester police believe could have been a suicide based on the circumstances surrounding the disappearance — Vander Weit had talked about suicide prior to leaving the home. No weapons were found at the scene.
