Clothing on remains found along the East River shoreline in Queens — including this shirt an investigator is holding (center) — matches the outfit missing teen Avonte Oquendo was wearing when he disappeared.

The NYPD and crime scene investigators search for evidence along the East River. Police sources say the body appears to have separated via decomposition, not a violent act.

Just after 7 p.m. Thursday, police found a left arm that police sources said appeared to have separated via decomposition — rather than a violent act. Police divers returned to the cold and murky water on Friday, feeling around the underwater rocks while wearing heavy gloves. Other cops searched the shoreline using cadaver dogs. They shut down the search by nightfall and were expected to resume at 7 a.m. Saturday.

In all, they found legs in boys’ size 16 Old Navy jeans, a size 51/2 Air Jordan sneaker and a striped shirt — all consistent with the outfit Avonte was wearing when he went missing.

Cops found the legs about 15 to 20 feet from the arm on a set of rocks. On Friday, cops found what appeared to be a human jawbone, a source told The News. They have also located possible rib bones and a partial pelvis.

Fruit of the Loom underwear — size large — were found on the body, offering a glimmer of hope for the family. Fontaine said she dressed her son in Hanes underwear.

Police said that clothing found on the remains -- which include a left arm and a torso with legs from the waist down -- appear "similar" to that worn by Avonte when he went missing from his Long Island City school. Perecman said the Old Navy jeans found on the torso could have been the same as those worn by Avonte, 14, of Rego Park, Queens, when he went missing, and that an Old Navy shirt found with the body parts appears to be the same kind he wore.
Perecman said the feet of the remains were clad in tube socks and Nike Air Jordan sneakers, similar to what Avonte wore, and may have protected the feet from decomposition, something that may allow experts to compare Avonte's baby footprints with those of the body. http://www.newsday.com/news/new-yor...brush-footprint-may-help-id-remains-1.6819068

I think it is foul play. I can see one leg or arm dismembering but not the whole body naturally. Most drowning victims are found as skeletons months later if not found right away. They aren't all in pieces.

Someone imo killed that little boy and cut him up to move him

The refuse that those remains were found with makes me feel sick. UGH.

Water is a huge draw for sensory seeking and it helps autistic children and adults relieve heightened nerves. Kinda hard to explain. My non verbal autistic son, on a trip to the lake when he was 10, also just walked in...shoes and all. Didn't jump, or swim, just walked in and under very cold water in September. A woman at a nearby camp site saw him and jumped in clothes and all to save him. He wasn't shaken and kept trying to go back and pulling us in, all weekend. He now swims for Special Olympics. As to the different underwear. My guess is he may have had some bathroom accident at school (happens) and they gave him a spare. Maybe part of the reason he flipped and ran out. Even small things like that, can cause a meltdown or elopement. I fear he did go straight to the water and this is him. :(

I think you are right. I thought the same thing about the possibility of emergency underwear after an accident and how that would be very distressing.
Thank heavens your son was rescued and congratulations on making it an important part of your lives. Did you know that Micheal Phelps, the US Olympic swimmer, was put in a swim program by his mother to help with his developmental issues? Your son is in good company :)

It looks like trash that floated in from the east river. It appears to be a small inlet, called Powell Cove, where things wash up and get caught in. The rocks are put there to help stop erosion of the shoreline. From the looks of the tree limbs and dried grass piled up, the water level is very low at the time he was found. He could have been in there for a while...

Poor Avonte! I feared this outcome with the recent river school trip and autistic children's fascination of water without the understanding of the danger associated with it. The dogs went right to a marsh and lost the scent initially. Avonte probably went into the water almost immediately after skipping happily from the school. So sad!

Here is a little info on the East River. What appears to be his remains were found quite a ways north of the school and I was puzzled why he wouldn't have been taken out into the ocean. The only positive out of all of this is that if this is his body then the family won't be frantically searching for Avonte for the rest of their lives.

This link answers my questions about the East River.

Thank you so much for the link. I have not had a chance to read it yet

I don't think anything Avonte may have done that day would have been able to be called 'typical' .. An autistic mind works in mysterious ways.

Part of me is thankful, if this is Avonte, so that the family can start dealing with the pain, and stop looking and hoping for him to come home.. . I definitely do not want him to be deceased, but I just don't think there was much chance of a positive outcome from this whole preventable tragedy.

This school needs to be held accountable. I'm glad their lawyer had their backs right from the start. How tragic.

We all know there are MP's that have been missing 30+ years. To never know where he is; is a hell I do not wish on any parent of a child that goes missing.

I don't think you are. When you consider the number of autistic kids who wander and who are unable to communicate and find their way home, I would say it would be a great idea. They do make such things:

Whoa my margins were blown on the page before this one! I wanted to thank so many posts but it was such a pain to scroll over on each so, sorry...I had to ditch the page.

I guess we still don't know anything yet for sure? I'm not familiar with the area, but if you look at the map the remains seem impossibly far from the school he was reported missing from! Let me find the map and I'll post it if it hasn't already been posted.

ETA: Although I do think it is Avonte, as clothes match what he was wearing as well. But it still seems so far!

I scrolled to the right then went down & thanked posts

Thank you, Roselvr! This is what I was looking for.

You're very welcome. Feel free to adjust as needed
Avonte Oquendo family lawyer: Missing teen's toothbrush, footprint may help ID remains
"He headed south to a pier and he could have gone on to the pier and off of it," Perecman said.

I wonder if there is suspicion on the female who took the picture

PIX11 News has learned from law enforcement sources that a woman in her late teens, Natasha Shapiro, who lives three blocks from where the remains were found, discovered them while she was out walking Thursday.

Law enforcement sources also told PIX11 News that Shapiro took a photo of the remains and posted it on social media before calling police. She confirmed to reporters outside of her home Friday afternoon that she had called police, but denied that she had posted photos of what she’d seen. Friday night, a police cruiser was posted outside of her home, and crime scene tape had been strung around it.

Edit; I see she's 19 Was going to say; since when do they print names of minors? I would be appalled.

Clicking thanks was not enough! Thank you so much

I have a question for those that have been reading this thread from the beginning...remember when there was a possible sighting of Avonte (I think on a train?). Was he found in that direction that the train (?) was headed?
Otherwise, what are ways he may have gotten so far?

I remember that!! But IIRC it turned out to be another child. Thing is he could have been riding the subway w/out money---just go under the arm of the turnstile---

I thought that too-- he had an accident, changed underwear and it may have just thrown off his whole day (poor little guy).

Yes; it was another kid that looked similar

Avonte Oquendo resembles rider in subway train photo, says dad Originally published: October 30, 2013 8:36 PM - Updated: October 30, 2013 9:52 PM

Photo resembling Avonte Oquendo is not the missing teen, cops say Published: Wednesday, October 30, 2013, 11:00 PM - Updated: Thursday, October 31, 2013, 12:43 PM

The photo emerged Wednesday and even Avonte's father said there was a "close likeness."

But police located the individual who was photographed and determined it is not Avonte, who has been missing since he walked out of his Queens high school on Oct. 4.

“It was not Avonte. This person whose photo it was was in the precinct with his parents," a police spokeswoman told the Daily News.

Police believe Avonte walked from the school and into a nearby hilly area along the mouth of the Newtown Creek that was covered with shrubbery. He may have lost his way among the brush and tumbled down a steep drop into the water.

“It drops down all of a sudden, so if you’re running and you’re not careful, you can fall about 30 feet into the East River,” a police source told the Daily News.

...Different police sources suggest the boy slipped from a cliff into the East River.

According to the Post, Avonte was seen running from a dog in Hunter's Point South Park. A source said, "He had a huge fear of dogs and was seen running from one... He may have run in a panic and fallen into the water." Avonte was also afraid of the water.

That is interesting.

I can understand completely why LE would be at her house, questioning her as a witness since she found the remains. I would think that was all routine...but why in the world would they put crime scene tape around her home? That doesn't make sense to me. Maybe the reporter got it wrong?

I read last night somewhere that she didn't want to talk to the press. I also read that she isn't a young child, a teenager, she is in fact a college aged student (19), taking photography classes. The picture I saw of her looked really stressed, so maybe police put tape up to keep reporters away from her house or at least at some distance?

Thank you for the articles. I hope his parents are not reading them.

Who posts photos of human remains on social media? That's really awful.

She's supposedly a photography student; so I wouldn't doubt it. I've read she's denying it

Guy up in Maine recently (a few months ago) found remains and posted a photo on his FB page, too. That social media world where daily life becomes a diary of photos rather than spoken or written communication...... :(

Can't really deny it, if it happened...someone will have proof IMO.

This is the first time I've heard anything about Avonte being chased by a dog and falling into the river. Who witnessed this dog? Who's dog?

Missing autistic teen Avonte Oquendo was seen running from a dog at a nearby park right after he slipped out of his Queens school, and he likely fell into the East River in his panic, law-enforcement sources told The Post Friday.
