Family members were there at the beginning but not for quite awhile. Maybe they started to see what we see?

Well hopefully everyone who has donated to his go fund me actually knows that they are allowed a refund per go fund me rules.

Most people have their bank accounts connected to a WePay card in which is where go fund me sends the donations to (the WePay card). Wepay is similar to paypal if I'm not mistaken.

So per go fund me rules. Donators can request a refund if they feel the money hasn't been used for the stated purpose or whatever.

Now don't get me wrong. That 8k is probably long gone. But refunds that are charged back by go fund me or the persons credit card provider will definitely be deducted from his linked bank account.

Or Wepay will close his account altogether if he doesn't have enough to cover the refunds. This will cause him to lose access to milking go fund me altogether. Jmo.

It looks like ole JR is losing his followers that really wanted to believe in him.

Because his last post 20 hrs ago about getting a new prosecutor or attorney general due to the lackness of mpd ; Seems to only have 2 comments. And none are from CN nor the buzzfeed writer.

So this tells us that he is being slowly discovered as a possible fraud. Jmo.

Plus if you google Jenny Chen. It's a good chance that the Websleuths Jenny Chen thread may show.

So if any new comers stopped here. They will get a sense of what some are thinking.

So imo. His Facebook group page will be gone soon. Or he will do schizophrenic comments of bad day/good day.

While still not searching for Jenny.

Btw. We seen his skiing pics. And he looks like he came prepared to ski.

But for the pics he used while in Mexico to find jenny. He doesn't seem like he came prepared to actually search.

His pictures simply say photo op. But not we are about to search a 10 mile radius. Jmo.

Agree. That woman has blonde or brown hair in that picture.

Plus I never noticed a wedding ring on Jenny's finger. Even if it was a $5 ring. Jmo.

snipped by me:

Thanks for the info on the attorney. Yikes, that would make me nervous. Do you think they are involving him because of his cartel connections? In other words, maybe someone like him is very powerful and "well-connected" and can hear things through the underground grapevine, so to speak.

Poor JR. This is just snowballing into an unending nightmare. JMO, I'll just say it: I do feel like the marriage may have been a "green card marriage" where he wanted to help her stay in the US, and never imagined it could come to something like this.

While reading Jenny's weibo, I found some writing that gave insight into the question of who are Jenny's friends. "My mom would always worried about me didn't have any friends to hang out with while I was in China. She said to me " when you get married, how are you going to invite enough girls to be your bridesmaids?' It's a tough question, but I got answer "Hengdian has bunch of part time actors."No, that's just not true, I have friends, and they are real on internet, is that real? sort of." http://weibo.com/p/1001603919220546113863?mod=zwenzhang She certainly has a sense of humor, I give her that! So, I think she is a "square peg" sort of individual who was used to doing things alone, her way.

Also on weibo, I read an entry where she talks about seeing the movie "Wild" and was very excited by it. I think her current trip had to have been inspired by it. Anyone see the movie, as I haven't. This entry is in Chinese, so I had to put it in google translate to read it. http://weibo.com/p/1001603792643753694996?mod=zwenzhang

I suggest you read additional entries on this part of her weibo, if you haven't. Gives some sense into who Jenny is. http://weibo.com/p/1005051723208662/wenzhang

JR must have changed the setting on the Help Find Jenny Facebook site to keep people like me out, like you said, because I still cannot access it. I will have to rely on you and other WS posters for any updates there from now on as I choose to remain a dinosaur and not have a FB account. Yes, I am a weirdo, I know. :D

Hmmm.. Interesting movie choice. I'm not one to go off on strange little details but reading the plot synopsis, it's almost like Jenny took the script right from that movie.
Even down to the lead character encountering 2 men on the trail that started to make sexually suggestive comments to her until she ran and escaped.

I honestly don't get this whole trip. I understand backpacking and staying in cheap hostels but I really don't get putting out families that are probably near poverty so I can
have a vacay. I still very much want the girl found but I'm with Lilibet in that the whole thing rubs me the wrong way, as does hubby.

This is one of the stranger threads I have ever followed, I don't know whether to be worried sick or really really annoyed. I feel better that some of the most compassionate posters on Sleuths feel the same.

I might be showing my ignorance, but what does changing prosecutors have to do with the business of interviewing of the drivers? It isn't clear to me why the interviewing of the drivers has not happened yet. Or is it possible the interviews have taken place, and he just hasn't reported on it yet?

I, too, wonder about the fees for the PI and attorney. It had been let known that JR was behind in payments to his PI and his team, who were generously continuing to work for him, regardless. They likely will not continue to incur costs without knowing they will eventually get paid, nor should they.

You make an interesting point about it seeming like Jenny was almost following a script from the book/movie "Wild." What if she actually was? Could that provide clues, as bizarre as it sounds? There isn't much else to go on. What strikes me is that Jenny and the author Cheryl Strayed were both 26 at the time of their hikes. Cheryl had gone off the deep end after her mother suddenly died when she was in her early twenties. She nosedived into heroin and anonymous sex, which destroyed her marriage, got pregnant and got an abortion. At that point she decided to go on the hike to redeem and discover herself. She made a series of naive and inexperienced mistakes on the trail. Her ex-husband sent supplies and encouraging notes to her. She met people who helped her and scared her. In the end, she succeeded.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wild_(2014_film)

In light of Jenny's comments about social injustice in Mexico, I think it's interesting that Cheryl was a political activist in her youth. Could Jenny have gotten caught up in protests, even before the violent ones over the weekend?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheryl_Strayed

I think trying to merge the book with Jenny's trip is a huge reach, but there is something about Jenny's trip that doesn't make sense. This theory at least makes her trip and writings somewhat understandable.

There is another book called "Into the Wild" chronicling a young man's journey into the Alaska wilderness, where he died. This story has inspired copy cats, often with similarly tragic results. So it doesn't seem beyond possibility that the book "Wild" could also inspire copycats. JMO

ETA: Although Johnathan Croom didn't actually die in the wilderness, there was concern that he had gone there. Another Wild-obsessed kid from the Midwest came to eastern Oregon on a trek and did die, but I can't find the link. Both were tragic news.

Much more information available googling for curious ones.

Anyway, these are my morning ramblings over coffee, FWIW.

I don't see why changing prosecutors matters since JR said Corona was giving them access to the drivers without going through LE. So there shouldn't be a delay because of changing prosecutors, unless Corona backed out. If they have interviewed the drivers and came up empty, I wonder what they would say, if anything. It's been very quiet on FB. Did his team go on strike until they get paid?

I think I have become obsessed. At Walmart I see a young gal get out of a car with 3 men that may or may not be from mexico and I want to shout Jenny! Or walk by in the store and whisper the name..Jenny.

Yup you're officially obsessed. :D

Just by chance, I found a Chinese news article written about Jenny's disappearance! It was posted on 4/29/16, so it's not new.

The translation site translates it poorly, as usual, though.

Since it's an older report at first I wasn't very excited at what was written except to know that this did make the news over in China. BUT! then it mentions Jenny's family in China! Seems her older brother (so, she has a brother!) was interviewed. He says the last contact with the family was around April 9, where she chatted with her mother. He and his mother urged Jenny to go back soon as they worried for her safety. I believe it then makes reference to her weibo where she said she almost got raped. I think it says she was riding with two men who were drunk, and she jumped on the highway to escape.

I note that I think where the google translate says "circle of friends" it must be referring to her weibo site.

The brother told reporters he has contacted the Chinese Embassy in Mexico. He has also published in online news in hopes of getting help.

Just popping in to if there is anything new !! I must admit I am caught up in this case (ok..obsessed LOL)
Busy week at work so haven't had much time to "research" FB and all but hope to have a chance this weekend.
I agree that the Corona interviews and his chance to talk to drivers should not have anything to do with switching PI or legal help.
Hope there is word soon on JC !!!

OH..and YES, a google search of her name does bring up WS among many others who seem to feel same way about JR
and CN has been really quiet as I took a quick look just now.

What a great find, slowpoke! Even with the wonky translation, we learned she has a brother and was probably riding with drunks. Her family must be terrified. I got the impression the embassy has taken this seriously, although JR would disagree.

Here is an interesting exchange between CC and JR this evening. CC wonders what ever happened with being able to talk to the drivers. JR replies that they have changed prosecutors. CC replies that she remembers he said that but she didn't realize it had anything to do with the interviews. She hopes they will make progress soon. JR says he hopes so too and that they have to be patient. CC agrees.

Notice how he ignored and slid right over the part where she says she didn't realize changing prosecutors had to do with interviewing the drivers. Too bad she let him, but I have to give her credit. She's the only one asking questions. The second link shows her earlier questions. He avoided saying much then too, and CN nicely shut her down.

The hasn't been updated in (8??)days. His updates to HFJ are cryptic, sparce, and vague. As I am out of adjectives this evening, I'm wondering, is she really missing? It doesn't seem like he thinks so, with his lack of involvement. Ok, so if she isn't, and the motive of this hoax was money, that plan didn't work out. With the lack of money, wouldn't she be "found" by now? But she's not. Then I think, the target for was only 15k, this couldn't have been all about money. What the....? I've seen cases in the past where fame was the motive of the hoax. Couldn't be the case here, as JR has pretty much checked out. It's like his friends, family, and he know something we don't (we haven't heard from them, really?). Ugh. Thanks to all who contribute to this!!

Jumping in, haven't read more than the first few posts....apologies for any of these immediate thoughts that have already been discussed or dismissed.
First, this is completely bonkers for this woman to be "couch-surfing" around Mexico on her own. Nutso. I'm sure there are plenty of people who think it's perfectly safe. I vacation in the resort spots a couple times a year, and venture in to some of the remote spots to do some charity work....with several known locals. I can assure you it is absolutely not safe to venture off the path on your own; especially if you are female.

Given her "exotic" looks and petite frame, my first thought is that she has been taken against her will, and is being made to work in a brothel.
The locals in the bars would be happy to escort a potential customer to a brothel for a fee. Alternatively, the local church might be able to help.
If she's in a brothel, she's a money maker, so she will have to be bought to get her out.

RSBM

Did the book or movie specifically say her marriage was destroyed? I recall their divorce as amicable and they got matching tattoos but specifically where I got that, I'm not sure. I read the book before seeing the movie, but I'd already known of her as Sugar, well-known for saying in her column that "wanting to leave is enough."

Go, even though you love him.
Go, even though he is kind and faithful and dear to you.
Go, even though he's your best friend and you're his.
Go, even though you can't imagine your life without him.
Go, even though he adores you and your leaving will devastate him.
Go, even though your friends will be disappointed or surprised or pissed off or all three.
Go, even though you once said you would stay.
Go, even though you're afraid of being alone.
Go, even though you're sure no one will ever love you as well as he does.
Go, even though there is nowhere to go.
Go, even though you don't know exactly why you can't stay.
Go, because you want to.
Because wanting to leave is enough.

I can't shake the feeling that Jenny decided to move on and that JR was well aware of it but not willing to be upfront with others. She was supposed to fly to Cuba and to NY. Has JR or her family mentioned verifying, or even attempting to, whether she did or not? In interviews he's given different dates for when she was supposed to return (to Seattle?) and IIRC one was a specific day in July. Would his hearing something in 30-45 days magically coincide with her planned return?

I did a google search of "Chen Qun Dan" which is her Chinese name (Jenny Chen is her "american" name), didn't find much but this which is the same article you found:
