Actually the decision to pay or fight is made by the insurance company. They are the ones paying out. Of course, the premiums are astronomical. :shame::cheers::moo:

Thats not the way it works. The settlement was made by the Baltimore Board of Estimates, which Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake is the head off. It came directly out of city funds. They made that decision for one reason and on reason only. If it went to court, the city would have lost a lot more money.

Baltimore approves $6.4 million settlement for Freddie Gray's family

I hope every law enforcement officer that was charged in the Freddie Gray case is handed over $6.4 million dollars. They certainly deserve it. IMO

I can't help but think back to that early, infamous grandstanding speech that MM made when she announced that charges would be filed against the officers, before any evidence had been gathered. Maybe someone was too full of herself? Too big for her britches? Egomaniac? Yes, yes and yes.

Thank God for real justice! Congrats to all the officers who were railroaded in this sham of a case.

:woot:

The officers were clearly over charged as murder must show pre conceived intent to kill. Criminally negligent homicide might have worked, but she would still need to prove that the police knew their actions could actually kill the deceased.

Rather than murder, or completely innocent officers, I have a sneaking suspiscion that what happened was that some of the arresting officers got tired of dealing with a career lowlife who may well gave them a hard time when arresting him for the nth time and also had a big mouth. They then gave him a "rough ride" back to the jail (hog tied in a Paddy Wagon taking corners fast and coming to sudden stops- multiple ouches, when you cant brace yourself). They did not intend to kill him (murder), nor did they even intend to seriously injure him. Rather, they just intended to bounce him around a little bit.

Cryptic, I think the "rough ride" theory has been debunked by real evidence, which was presented at one (or more) of the earlier trials (Goodson- the driver, IIRC). There were multiple views of security cameras along the route of the police wagon, and Goodson was seen driving the speed limit, and came to full stops where appropriate except for ONE slow rolling stop. An expert testified that the rolling stop was actually MORE safe for FG in the back.

There was no "rough ride."

Mosby speaking now: Charges against 6 officers never an indictment against all police officers. Not anti police, "I'm anti police brutality"

"Hyperbole & grandstanding of others" will never shape charging decisions, @MarilynMosbyEsq says. Praises "countless sacrifices" of her team

Mosby says "consistent bias" by members of @BaltimorePolice department at "every stage" of investigation. She is alleging massive collusion.

.@MarilynMosbyEsq cites "inherent bias" when "police police themselves." Person in crowd: "Go ahead, Marilyn!" #Baltimore #FreddieGray

.@MarilynMosbyEsq: "We could try this case 100 times and cases like it, and we would end up with the same result."
