Human remains found in water tank at Queensland education premises

'Discovery of male’s bones and clothing during routine plumbing inspection sparks homicide investigation'

'Human remains have been discovered in an old underground water tank at a special education facility in Brisbane during a routine plumbing inspection.

The bones and clothing of what appeared to be a deceased male were discovered at Autism Queensland’s Brighton premises in the city’s north and have triggered the involvement of homicide detectives.

Acting superintendent Mick Dowie said the largely decomposed body, found in the disused tank at the back of an administration building, appeared on first examination to have been in place for “a number of years”.

Homicide detectives had already begun combing through cold case murder files for possible links, Dowie said.'

This is sad! Surely they know who went missing from the home/ school. It can't be that many that went missing? i wonder how hard it is to get into and if it was an accidental death. :(

There is a subsequent MSM article here PL:

Mystery bones in septic tank could be 1980s murder victim

December 1, 2016 2:59pm

'A FRIEND of a man feared murdered in the 1980s believes the bones found in an old septic tank belong to him — and hopes his killer may finally be brought to justice.

When news spread that bones of an adult man had been found in the disused tank on a property in the north Brisbane suburb of Brighton, the friend thought at once “it’s him”.

The grisly discovery of the bones on Tuesday has led Queensland police to search through missing people and cold case files to find the identity of the victim.

But a former Brighton resident told news.com.au a man called Wayne lived at the North Rd address in the late 1980s before he vanished without a trace.'

“Only a small amount of bones remain,” he said.
He revealed the amount of clothing found in the pit was limited to not much more than a single “running or jogger’s” shoe.
Acting Supt Dowd said information provided to Crime Stoppers was assisting the inquiry that, combined with speaking to people about missing people in the area, led police to believe the man was killed about 30 years ago.
“We are looking at a number of people that we believe may have disappeared from that area, or reported missing from that area, going back about 30 years,” he said.
He confirmed a homicide inquiry was under way because of the way the body was found. It was likely whoever dumped the body there had some knowledge of the area, he said.
“The conclusion would be that someone would have known the pit was there,” he said.

Thank y'all for the link! Hopefully that will at least put his families mind at ease by knowing he has been found. :(

I hope they can identify the victim after all this time, with the "small amount" of bones that remain :(

Courtesy of Pi Thoughts on another thread, the remains have been identified as belonging to Wayne Youngkin, 29, of North Street, Brighton, who disappeared in Brisbane in 1986:

Not wishing to hijack this page but I can't find a thread for Wayne Youngkin missing in Brisbane since 1986. His remains have been just been identified after being located in a disused tank last month.

Police investigating human remains located in Brighton on November 29 have identified them as belonging to Wayne Youngkin who went missing in 1986.

Mr Youngkin was previously a resident of North Street in Brighton and was 29-years-old when he went missing.

The death is being treated as suspicious and detectives from the Homicide Squad are assisting with the investigation.

Investigators are also appealing for a person who called Sandgate Police Station on August 22, 1992 in relation to Wayne’s disappearance to come forward and provide further information to police.

The remains were discovered in the disused tank at the back of a North Street special education facility during routine maintenance.

Wow, that was a quick identification! I hope this will bring some closure to Wayne's family, and I hope his killer will soon be brought to justice.

'Human remains found inside a septic tank at a property in Brisbane's north a fortnight ago have been identified as belonging to a man who disappeared from a house on the site in 1986.

Police said dental records helped them identify 29-year-old Wayne Youngkin.'

'Inside the tank, police also found a ring, clothes, and a gold watch inscribed with Mr Youngkin's initials.'

POLICE have identified human remains found in an old septic tank as belonging to Wayne James Youngkin.
Mr Youngkin lived at the property in the north Brisbane suburb of Brighton before going missing 30 years ago.
Police say the last documentation of Mr Youngkin was when he applied for a passport in 1986.
Investigators hope a mystery male caller who rang Sandgate Police Station in August 1992 may hold the clue to Mr Youngkin’s murder.
Mr Youngkin lived at the property with an uncle and his grandmother, both of whom have since passed away.
Detective Inspector Mick O’Dowd said as far as he was aware, the property was never searched when Mr Youngkin was reported missing.

I believe looking into water/sewer tanks is a important issue for future cases to think about with rural properties, especially since he was last known to have lived there.

Friends of murdered man Wayne Youngkin have held a memorial night to raise money for his funeral, more than a fortnight after his skeletal remains were found in a disused septic tank...

Mr Hoeksema said Mr Youngkin was well-known in the area in the 1980s and his friends wanted to pay tribute to him...

Ms Vesconte said he deserved to be laid to rest in a dignified manner. "He was a kind, gentle and warm-hearted person who deserves a respectful send-off," she said.

HOMICIDE detectives are stepping up efforts to find the killer of a Brisbane man, whose remains were found in a septic tank 30 years after he vanished.

Police have released new images of items found in November alongside the remains of Wayne James Youngkin in a disused septic tank on a property at Brighton.
Since the discovery of his remains at a North Street address, police have undertaken a series of forensic examinations of the scene, including a number of exhibits retrieved from the location.

Police are concentrating on forensic examinations of a set of vehicle seat covers recovered from the scene and are in the process of developing a DNA profile from them.
A series of photographs of the seat covers has been released in the hope that the members of the public may assist in identifying the brand of seat covers from the distinctive markings and patterns on them.

Emergency services began what Acting Detective Superintendent Mick O'Dowd described as a "painstaking and methodical" search around a 700-metre section of trail in the Deagon Wetlands.

Authorities are acting on information received from the public after Mr Youngkin's body was discovered in a septic tank in Brighton in November last year, 30 years after he was reported missing.

SES volunteers started early on Sunday morning crawling on their hands and knees, some with metal detectors, checking either side of a 700m stretch of path...

Police have taken statements from a number of people but a suspect or motive has not been identified...

The Brighton property, where he lived with his now deceased uncle and grandmother, is not believed to have been searched prior to his body being found.

Divers from the army and police have been called in to search for clues into the presumed murder of Brisbane man Wayne Youngkin as police revealed they were considering whether the killer could be dead...

About a dozen police and Australian Defence Force divers descended on the Deagon Wetlands in Brisbane's north on Tuesday morning to search a small swampy lake...

Inspector Trezise would not reveal what they were searching for, beyond saying "certain evidence may have been disposed of in the water".

It seems so odd that his property wasn't searched straight away.

I believe Mr Youngkin was not reported missing for quite some time though? If you recall the Tabbitha Hodge case, it seemed amazing to me she (apparently) drove into a canal not far from her home and that was never searched at the time either. (Later dredging finding her car and body). I guess there's only so many resources the police have available.

Seabreeze, is your screen name alluding to the boarding house fire?
