LAHAINA, MAUI (HawaiiNewsNow) - A state land department spokesperson has confirmed the discovery of iwi, or human skeletal remains, at a West Maui beach park on Sunday.
Authorities say a beachgoer was at the southernmost edge of Puamana Beach Park at around 9:15 a.m. when he found what appeared to be a human skull along the coastline, fronting the park's grass lawn.

It sounds from the last two paragraphs of the article that these may be assumed to be historical remains?

I saw that as well. It says:
Maui police officers responded to the scene about 15 minutes later and took custody of the bones before eventually transferring possession of the iwi to officers with the Department of Land and Natural Resource's law enforcement brach.

The state land department says it will deliver the remains to the state's Historic Preservation Division for further identification.

It was the identification part that made me think they will attempt to ID the person. But if these are historical they typically won't be able to ID them. So IDK. :dunno:

They would try to identify the tribe/family to decide where to return the skull for burial. But it's not uncommon for a paleoanthropologist or forensic anthropologist to be consulted for examination of older remains, so it might not mean anything.

Iwi kūpuna found at West Maui surf spot Puamana may find rest soon

"What started as five bones turned into more than five boxes of bones found over the last several years at surf spot Puamana Beach Park in West Maui, according to Native Hawaiian cultural practitioner Keeaumoku Kapu.....

..... Kapu said he first started working with the county in 2017 when human remains were found at Puamana. In 2021, the county closed Puamana Beach Park due to coastal erosion, exposed iwi kūpuna and safety concerns.....

The county Parks department purchased large reinterment lock boxes that will hold iwi kūpuna onsite at Puamana Beach Park."
