The local news channel 10 WSLS (NBC) reported that her purse and cell phone were found in a parking lot but that the battery had been removed from her cell phone

When I first read this post, I thought maybe the phone had been dropped or thrown down very hard onto the pavement causing the battery to pop out, but WSLS-10 is reporting the phone (without the battery) was in her purse. Very strange...

Why would someone take the battery to the phone...if the purse was going to be left where it was with the phone in it? What would be the point? Hopefully there are prints on the phone that will help them with this case.

Parents, pastor speak out in search for missing VT student
October 19, 2009
<snipped>
WSLS sat down with Harrington’s pastor, Rev. Diane Scribner Clevenger, who lives with the Harrington family in their Roanoke County home.

She says police first contacted the family Sunday morning after finding Morgan Harrington’s purse in the parking lot of John Paul Jones Arena.

“Her phone was in there,“ she said. “It was odd the battery had been removed.“

Rev. Scribner Clevenger says Harrington’s parents left Monday morning from their Roanoke County home to travel to Charlottesville. They took some of her belongings along with them to help with the search.

Morgan’s mother Jill said, "We talk to her almost daily and we need to know where she is and get her home as safe as possible, so any information would be appreciated."

Police say Harrington will not have any ID on her or a cell phone. A pastor with the family says that's because Harrington's purse was found in the parking lot of the arena.

I thought this might be the girl found on the Blue Ridge Parkway this afternoon, I hope she is identified soon and Morgan is found. My heart broke for her parents on television today.

This is a link to the body found in my area today FWIW
http://www.wlos.com/shared/newsroom/wlos_index.shtml

ETA: The girl in the link above seems to have multiple piercings and we havent heard that about Morgan, also it says the hair is light brown or auburn, which doesnt match either. It sure looks like a straight (relatively) shot from John Paul Jones Arena to this area of the blue ridge, and a roughly 4.5 hour drive. If the concert ended at 1 am or so, and the body was found at 630 a.m. it could line up, maybe I am just reaching.....

Randi Neumann Is missing from bedford va. She appears to have a nose piercing. She has been missing since 10/15 I believe.

A poster on the Help Find Morgan Dana Harrington Facebook page (http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=162224546575&ref=search&sid=666482915.1685764065..1) who worked at the arena reported talking to Morgan around 10 pm. IIRC, he was working the entrance area to the arena. Morgan had exited the concert and was trying to get back inside. Apparently there's a no re-entry policy, so he had to turn her away.

This means she was still in the area ~10 pm.

I found some conflicting information. WDBG TV7 has reported that her father reported her missing, not the friends.

http://www.wdbj7.com/Global/story.asp?S=11336143#

Harrington's parents, Dan and Jill, both spoke at the news conference and appealed to Morgan to call them, or if there is someone holding her against her will to release her. Morgan was supposed to return home Sunday to study for a math test with her father. When she never showed up, her father reported her missing to police.

Why would Morgan's friends head home without reporting her missing? Why wouldn't they stay to help look for her? Charlottesville is over 2 hours from Virginia Tech's Blacksburg campus. Morgan reportedly didn't drive to the concert, so she didn't have a way home.

This information, another article where I read she had tried to call her friends after getting separated from them (I'll have to try and find the link), and the statement about the battery having been removed from the cell phone found in her purse are very strange. I wonder if the friends know more than they have reported to LE.

I was surprised to see that there wasn't a discussion thread yet for Morgan. Here is her Information & Support thread.

Police continued to seek help Monday in finding a Virginia Tech student from Roanoke who went missing during a Metallica concert in Charlottesville on Saturday night.

Morgan Dana Harrington, 20, was last seen near the John Paul Jones Arena in Charlottesville, according to University of Virginia police.

She had gone to the concert with Amy Melvin, her roommate in Blacksburg, and another friend from James Madison University. Harrington drove.

Melvin said Harrington went outside before Metallica took the stage. She said she wasn’t sure why.

“Everyone assumed she’d be coming back,” Amanda Melvin, Amy Melvin’s older sister and a friend of Harrington’s, said. Friends and family still haven’t heard from Harrington, she said.

Amanda Melvin said Harrington’s purse and cellphone were found outside the stadium and her car was still in the parking lot. She said Harrington wouldn’t abandon her friends there.

Those living and working near the John Paul Arena may see various police activity in the immediate area today. State and university police have been canvassing the area since Monday to make sure nothing is out of the ordinary and no additional evidence may have been overlooked. Such activity may resume at various times Tuesday. A state police spokesperson says they will use a helicopter again.

Anyone who may have been videoing or taking pictures (on a cell phone) of the Metallica concert or audience/crowds that evening are asked to review such video for anyone who might resemble Miss Harrington and contact state police or UVA police.

A little more info:

Her parents said they talk to her every day and her disappearance is very out of character.

"Morgan is a pretty transparent kid, who's had a really close relationship with us," her father, Dan Harrington, said in a phone interview Tuesday. "I don't think there are lots of secrets, so this kind of behavior of (her) missing is not something I think we would expect."

Dan Harrington, who lives in Roanoke, said his daughter had asked him to help her study for a math test and go through the class schedule for next semester on Sunday. He called her friends around 12:30 p.m. when he realized he had not heard from her.
