MN - 10 dead, 5 injured in Red Lake High School shooting, 21 March 2005

You know, search engines. :)

Yeah, seems he spent a lot of time (prior to this year) on writers' forums, too.

I heard through the grapevine that the metal detectors weren't working. How sad is that?

Actually, the reports I saw indicated that the security guard he killed was at the metal detector. I don't think it would have made a difference if it was working or not.

Which raises the question.. If a gun is detected on a student with one of those detectors, is the student NOW armed, inside the school, with unarmed security moving at him to the accompanyment of alarm buzzers, etc.?

Seems to me that the situation forces the person to act immediately, and assuming that they were in full knowledge that they were carrying a gun into a school, they're already intending to do the "worst case scenario."

That removes all possibility of doubt in the mind of the aggressor.. there's simply no time for second thoughts and they have to react immediately. Is there a better way to handle the issue?

It's horrible to think that in a line of children, one is armed and suddenly fighting because they've been discovered. All the other kids in the immediate vicinity are in heightened danger, and the conflict becomes a certainty because there's no other option for the aggressor.

I know it may seem silly, but in my opinion, the metal detector needs to be immediately followed by a short little containment path, where the detector and path are gated.

Or heck, put the detector into a turnstyle. If it triggers, the turnstyle essentially traps the subject right there.

The other interesting thing is that the whole event took ten minutes to play out. From the time he shot the guard to the time he shot himself.. ten minutes.

I dunno about more shrinks...I wonder if the boy was on psychiatric medication???? I do not think they are monitored as closely as they should be...(Not that they don't help but they need to be watched closely!!!)
To answer your question (and I had wondered the same!)... yes, he claimed to be on anti-depressants in one of his more recent internet postings.

All fine and good. But screw a "detainment path!" How about allowing some of these teachers to carry firearms, eh? You know- Law Abiding Citizens? Especially that dead citizen who was manning the gate... Let's get real: what good is an audible alarm (when it is working!) if it is not backed up by some deadly force?

The Minnesota teenager responsible for Monday's high school shooting spree last year created a violent, blood-soaked video that included an animated character shooting four people and blowing up a police car before committing suicide, The Smoking Gun has learned. Using the alias "Regret," Jeff Weise, 16, last October posted online a 30-second animation entitled "Target Practice." Click here to view Weise's crudely animated Flash production. Weise posted a second short, "Clown," several weeks after uploading "Traget Practice" to a popular multimedia web site. The 50-second "Clown" ends with one character apparently being strangled by the clown.

The Columbine killers did the same thing...but then again...Hollywood does it every day???????????????

Here's his blog, but it looks like stuff has been deleted since yesterday. SOme entries are still there though.

Scroll down at this link below about halfway & they have reproduced some pm's they have from him

The same thing happened to Rachelle Waterman's blog after she was arrested for the murder of her mother . She left a post that very matter of factly announced her Mother was murdered. So, we think that possibly the police may be deleting stuff relevant to the case.

Teen shooter was taking Prozac,
Hospitalized for being suicidal

By Ceci Connolly and Dana Hedgpeth
Washington Post
RED LAKE, Minn. – Two days after a shooting rampage on the Indian reservation in Red Lake left 10 dead, friends, relatives and neighbors of the teenage assailant began to sketch a portrait of a deeply disturbed youth who had been treated for depression in a psychiatric ward, lost several close family members, sketched gruesome scenes of armed warriors and had been removed from the school where he gunned down most of his victims Monday.

Still, even the few people close to him were at a loss to pinpoint precisely what triggered Jeff Weise’s deadly outburst, and officials provided little information about the 16-year-old gunman.
--->>

Those willing to be interviewed described Weise as a young man who drifted among various homes on the reservation, listening to heavy metal music, proclaiming his affinity for Adolf Hitler and periodically showing up at the high school, even though Desjarlait said that six months ago he had ordered Weise to stay at home for tutoring.

He was taking the anti-depressant Prozac and at least once was hospitalized for suicidal tendencies, said Gayle Downwind, a cultural coordinator at Red Lake Middle School, who taught Weise.--->>

Shooting victim's families of the Red Lake Band have sued a Bloomington, MN based consulting firm that sold the Red Lake District a crisis managment plan. These families received $900,000 (divided among 21), which covered the school district's liability.

If you recall, the shooter, Jeff Weiss, immediately shot the security guard at the front door. Most schools have this set-up. I don't know what else can be done these days if an individual is intent upon shooting up a school.

I really don't know how any security company could have prevented that from happening unless you turn the schools into forts. They had from 2002 to work with the school before this shooting. I wonder what the school thinks was done wrong or not delivered (other than what few details are in the article)?
