I can't believe LE hasn't released any more details regarding Sonia's murder. I really hope this case doesn't go cold. Praying for Sonia's loved ones!!

This is the best news about Sonia's investigation that I have heard in a long time:

How creepy is it that the killer may have known Sonia, but not the other way around, just like the animal responsible for it all, could access a free lawyer but not so for Sonia's family.

Police have no suspects to speak of, however they believe the killer knew Sonia — though she may not have known him — and he is familiar with the area.

If an arrest is made, the accused could have access to a taxpayer-funded defence lawyer — a fact that frustrates Michele.

She said the family was forced to hire a lawyer in order to collect Sonia’s mail, and to stop collectors from demanding payment for the woman’s white Toyota Corolla, which set off the investigation when it was found bloodied and abandoned behind a Broadway business.

“We don’t even have the car. We told them to go to the police,” Michele said of the callers. “We have to get our own lawyer, otherwise we don’t achieve anything.

Someone who could do such a horrendous thing, could do it again. I hope they catch the criminal so that they can prevent that from happening.

Search continues for Sonia’s killer

Although viewers of television’s First 48 Hours might be tempted to doubt that the dastardly killer of nurse Sonia Varaschin six weeks ago will ever be identified, neither Orangeville Police Service nor Ontario Provincial Police have wavered in their confidence that he will.

Criminals, they acknowledge, are most often tripped up by their own errors. A vital clue is likely to be within one or more of the multitude of tips that are still being diligently followed.
In an interview Wednesday, Orangeville Police Chief Joe Tomei said he is asking that people continue to call the tip line with whatever information they might have – “no matter how insignificant it might seem.”
This case is being given the utmost priority by both police services. The OPP’s behavioural sciences investigators, including some who were directly involved in the then- Col. Russell Williams investigation, are in Orangeville sifting through clues, among other tasks.

With 3 crime scenes, it's very likely the perp made more than one mistake and left clues for the behavioural sciences investigators to find. LE seems very confident they will crack this case -- it's just a matter of time.

This sounds so familiar to me... I had to double check which case I was reading about.

After my cousin's murder... her body was found within 24-48 hours.

They came out about a week later and said that they had an abundance of evidence and would identify a suspect quickly. Her parents thought it would be like the other two cousins double murder 5 years earlier... arrest and conviction in less than a year.

They were given false hope.

That was 33 years

5 months

and 39 days ago.

No person of interest, no suspect, no arrest. Given the nature of her brutal murder, I can nearly guarantee it was not his last. It has serial killer (and possibly a trucker) written all over it. We've eliminated several already.

I hope that they are correct in this case... I hope the technology is the difference. DNA, being able to get the information out there more easily...all make a huge difference. But wow... talk about a total deja vu. :waitasec:

OPS taking some heat in the opinion columns...

Sonia Varaschin was murdered less than a year after Heidi’s death. Her family found out about the discovery of her bloody car and then-disappearance by reading about it on our website. They’re still unhappy with the lack of information forthcoming from police and the fact Sonia’s killer remains at large.

This is kind of off-topic, but thought I'll post it here ( will also post it in R.Williams' thread )

BBM That's just outrageous....

A killer needs to be found ASAP.

Does anyone remember Sonia's street address? I know she lived in Spring Street, but I can't find a house that match the press photos of hers in Google Streetview.

Police await forensic results in Sonia Varaschin murder investigation
Tuesday December 7 2010
By Richard Vivian, Metroland Staff
Neither Tomei nor Const. Peter Leon, central region communications officer for the OPP, which is heading the investigation, would comment whether there are any suspects at this time.

They also wouldn’t confirm whether police are closer now than a month ago to catching her killer.

“It’s a very complex investigation at this point,” Leon said. “I know that they have gathered evidence that they’re working with the Centre of Forensic Science on very, very closely.”

Both men urged the public to be patient with investigators.

“Every piece of evidence we have is critical in assisting us with the identity of the person or persons responsible,” Tomei said, referring to forensic evidence currently being examined. “It is painstakingly slow, unfortunately, but very critical.”

He again encouraged residents who have information about the case to report it to police.
Finding the boots worn by Sonia’s killer remains a top priority for investigators.

  • They want to know of anyone with men’s size 10 or 11 Dakota or Wind River brand boots, or who recently disposed of their boots.
  • They also want to hear from anyone who saw Sonia’s car, or a similar car, the night she was killed.
“It could be the smallest little piece of information that turns the corner on this. Somebody knows something.”

Be the first to Comment 0 Recommendation(s) TORONTO, Ont. - A 44-year-old woman is in critical condition after being viciously attacked in her home near Orangeville, Ont., on Tuesday.

Ontario Provincial Police said in a release Thursday that both cases are under investigation and there's no immediate reason to link them.

"At this time, there is no reason to suspect that the homicide is related in any way to the assault investigation in Mono and both of these investigations are being conducted independently and directed by OPP major case managers from the Criminal Investigation Branch," the release said.

December 10, 2010 – 1:07 pm
Constable Leon said that despite earlier media reports, the case is being treated independently of the investigation into the murder of Sonia Varaschin, a 42-year-old women who was killed in Orangeville three months ago.

“I can tell you emphatically that we are treating these cases independently of one another,” said Constable Leon. “There has been an attempt to draw a link, but we have said from the very beginning that these cases are not linked.”
