Sheriff haunted by unsolved missing children case

Most detectives have a case that haunts them.

The specters that have haunted Onslow County Sheriff Ed Brown are a long-dead sex offender and two children missing for nearly 50 years.

On Wednesday, workers found bones beneath a demolished house once owned by convicted child molester Henry Hunt, who died in 1991 at the age of 85.

Brown hoped the bones would mean two children, 7-year-old Diana Moon Yoli and 3-year-old Mark Eugene Yoli, missing since Sept. 13, 1962, had finally been found.

UPDATE: Bones thought to belong to missing children not human

Updated at 5:59 p.m. Feb. 26 2011

Authorities had hoped a near 50-year-old mystery involving the disappearance of two children had been resolved with the grisly discovery of bones earlier this week. But experts said Friday that remains found beneath a demolished Southwest area house are not human.

[snip]

Convicted sex offender Henry Hunt, who died in October 1991 at the age of 85, may have carried the whereabouts of the Yoli children with him to his grave. But on her deathbed in 1992, Hunt's one-time wife, Marjorie Hunt Norris, told a grim tale to her daughter that led local and federal investigators to the dark recesses of a rock mine in Maysville where the Yoli children were said to have been dumped.

[snip]

Her mother said her father came home the night of Sept. 13, 1962, and insisted she go to the beach with him. Once there, he told her he had picked up two children — a little girl and boy — and took them fishing in his boat. He said the boy fell into the water and drowned so he panicked and killed the girl. He claimed to have dumped them in a Maysville rock quarry, all according to the story related by Walter to law enforcement.

These cases are being handled by NCIS out of North Carolina. NCIS has lead due to fact they disappeared from the base. Onslow County Sheriff only assists NCIS.

Charley Project will only add a case listing if a photo is available for the missing person. Diana's Charley page indicates there are no photo's or additional information availabe for Mark.

Neither child is listed at NamUs.

Thanks for the information on these cases. Does anyone know what caused the POI to be registered as a sex offender? Is it related to children?

The children have been added to NCMEC. There is now a photo available of Mark and he has also been added to Charley Project. They have also been added to NamUs. All links below.

Note that Diana is referred to as "Diane Moon" at NCMEC and NamUs.

The poster depicts the unresolved case of 2-and-a-half-year-old Mark Yoli and 7-year-old Diane Moon, both of whom were “taken” Sept. 13, 1962, Lewis said.

“I think the kids are dead,” Lewis said. “We had a suspect back in the day, but there was never enough evidence to charge him.”

<snip>

“These cases stay active forever,” Lewis said of an unresolved missing-persons investigation. “It’s never closed until we have a disposition in court.”

Thank you to all the people on here and out in the world that still try to find closure to cases like these even if court room justice might not happen with the passage of time.
