FL FL - DeLand, Male Skeletal UP12776, 18-25, in Garbage Bag, Mar'14

Haleigh Cummings was around 38 - 40 lbs. I know that I have put that amount of weight inside of heavy duty waste bags and moved it without a problem. These remains could have been moved from another site after decomposition as well. Also, someone could have lifted the bag by picking the bag up with hands under the bag.

I really wish that some information would be published to the public, such as gender and estimated age until more can be determined. This would at least give some familys some hope for their missing loved ones.

I'm not very good at waiting. :banghead:

The Volusia County (Fla.) medical examiner’s office has analyzed the remains and issued a preliminary report, but the sheriff’s office there is withholding the findings pending further testing by a human identification specialist at the University of Florida.
“We still have no idea who the victim is and don’t have a firm fix yet on the age/gender,” Gary Davidson, spokesman for the Volusia County sheriff, said via email.

Bolded by me

It's hard to determine the sex of a child by their skeleton. There are subtle differences but they don't start becoming easier to spot until they hit puberty. Puberty is when the pelvis and hips become wider on girls, the sciatic notch broadens, etc.

So the bolded part definitely suggests that it is a pre-puberty child like we thought.

It certainly seems to point that way, but you'd think they'd have DNA by now to tell them for sure.

If the remains were old and incomplete, that could also make sex and age hard to determine. That could also make DNA hard to recover.

I check this thread every day and when it was off the 1st page today I thought maybe the remains had been identified, but No! I have no patience.

I thought maybe they had an idea and it would be just making sure. I guess I was wrong, or making sure was harder than I thought.

That's a good point about the bag ripping from the weight. I guess you'd have to put something like a shower curtain or area rug or something under it and drag it? I dunno, I never thought about disposing of a body before.

BBM

Uh huh, Carbuff. Surrre. ;)

Any chance this is Brittney Wood? TIA

She was last seen alive nearly two years ago near Mobile AL.

Brittney was 19ish years old, is said to have measured 5'1" and looked slender from photos.

Oh, please let it be HaLeigh Cummings. It has been soooo long.

However, I will be grateful for whomever is identified and brought home.

A woman has been missing in my town since April 5, 2014. Tuesday remains were found within walking distance from my daughter's home. A man who worked with her was immediately arrested and charged with her murder. He had just gotten out of prison after serving time for beating and strangling his 8 yr old daughter to death and throwing her into a dumpster where she was later found in the landfill. Bombshell today, medical examiner announced that the remains found were not those of the missing woman. The man is still charged with the missing woman's murder and is a suspect of the murder of the body found buried. This news has everyone stirred up. Wondering if there is a serial killer killing women and wondering where the missing woman's body is located.

Anyway, I just wanted to point out that it took only about two days for the coroner to rule that the remains did not belong to the missing woman. Now it looks to me like the medical examiner in Deland, Fl should know a lot in all this time, at least enough to eliminate some of the missing young women or children.

Volusia county's medical Examiner is done with the Bones, They are not releasing the info they found as they have now sent the bones, as of April 3rd, off to the University of Florida's Forensic team. This tells me that they know who it is but they need more info as to possible cause of death or more. The fact that they are being so tight lipped about it also tells me that this is someone missing from an on going case and they don't want anything to slip out and mess up the case.

I think you're right. If they didn't have an idea of who it was, they would have released more information.

Either it's a high-profile case, or LE has a good idea of who did it and they don't want said suspect(s) to know that the remains have been found because it could jeopardize the case against them. Possibly both.

I keep hoping for news of an identification. I have always wished Haleigh Cummings would still be alive somewhere, altho I really don't think she is, and at least if this is her she can be put to rest. Also there might be evidence that would convict those responsible.

I just want to know if it's a child or an adult and how long they have been there. I have a few reasons why I am looking into these remains found.

My very first thought was the remains were Haleigh Cummings. But if they are from an older person and had been there for years. Then I am looking into these remains found for another reason.

If it is a child I'm inclined to believe it could be Haleigh because of the Deland connection with Misty's brother.

However, it could be a teen or young adult. I did think about your sister also because of the vicinity. My friend Wendy also went missing in the 80's and although she was tall she was very small boned.

I just hope that someone can get some closure and soon.

The other possible reason would be that the bones are old and/or damaged and they're having difficulty getting DNA or other test results from them. In that case they might not have information to share.

I suspect it's a combination of the two -- they have a pretty good idea who it is but need further, more difficult testing before they can confirm it.
