Zahra's playground wins international acclaim

"The City of Hickory's Zahra Baker All Children's Playground is featured in the 2013 catalog in a two-page spread showcasing the playground. A professional photo shoot by Playworld Systems was held at the playground, after it was dedicated in 2012."

"It's very rewarding to see the positive impact our equipment can have on a community that has experienced indescribable tragedy," said Matthew Miller, chief executive officer of Playworld Systems. "In the midst of such anguish, we are privileged to help establish this uplifting place that brings the joy of play to everyone and excludes no one."

"More than a 1,000 blue pinwheels spun in the breeze at the Zahra Baker Memorial Playground in Hickory on Monday.

Pinwheels for Prevention is a project to remind people to call 911 whenever they suspect child abuse and to urge people involved to get help.

The 1,500 pinwheels placed at the playground represent only part of the number of calls that come in to the Department of Social Services every year in Catawba County."

New sculpture to commemorate Zahra Baker

"Thanks to the City of Hickory, an artist’s vision and a little serendipity, a new sculpture will pay tribute to Zahra Baker at Kiwanis Park. Zahra’s Whirled is an 8-foot-tall kinetic sculpture, reminiscent of a pinwheel, that will serve as the focal point of a concrete plaza near the Zahra Baker All Children’s Playground. The piece, composed of recycled and stainless steel, is expected to be unveiled by the end of April, which is National Child Abuse Prevention Month."
