I hope this is the right place to post this - sorry mods if I've got it wrong.
I know we have a few UK members here who have been posting in the April Jones thread, so I thought this may be of interest.

Yesterday afternoon a van driver went on a hit and run spree in Cardiff, Wales. Eye-witnesses report that he deliberately aimed his van at pedestrians and mowed them down at 5 different locations in the city.

The A&E department at the University Hospital of Wales was closed to new admissions for several hours to deal with the incident. 12 injured and one dead per this morning's reports.

A 31 year old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder - as yet, police haven't released his name or any more details.

What on Earth possesses somebody to do something like this?

The Guardian is reporting that the man has been named as Matthew Tvrdon.

Tvrdon looked relaxed as he was released from his handcuffs and brought into the courtroom.

Unshaven and wearing a black jumper, he was asked to confirm that he was of no fixed address.

"Unfortunately, at the moment I was between moving out," he told the court in a calm voice.

Tvrdon spoke with a soft Cardiff accent as he confirmed his date of birth as November 13 1980.

Karina Menzies, 32, was walking outside the fire station on Cowbridge Road West with her children when a white van - which injured more than a dozen others in 30 minutes of chaos - careered towards them.

Menzies bravely threw her children out of the way, her brother Craig said.

DS Paul Hurley said the suspect carried a weapon and left his Iveco van to physically assault people. Police want to identify and recover the weapon, which was believed to be a steering lock.

There were unconfirmed reports that police were investigating whether the driver had been involved in a domestic incident before the hit-and-runs took place. Police said a key part of the inquiry was focused on establishing who owned the white van.

The first incident to be reported was in Crossways Road in the Ely neighbourhood at 3.30pm on Friday. This was soon followed by other reports of hit-and-run collisions in several locations in the west of the city, including Grand Avenue, Cowbridge Road West and the Leckwith retail park.

It's just a miracle that there were no more fatalities :(

Only just seen this latest story, but the combination of rumour and the internet is proving to be a dangerous thing.
Sad to see that once again an innocent person was named as the culprit on social media sites and had his life and that of his family put at risk.

A van driver wrongly named on the internet as being responsible for driving the white van which rampaged through Cardiff on Friday has revealed he faced death threats to his children.

Jason Clowes was quickly blamed on Twitter and Facebook for the incidents which led to the death of mother-of-three Karina Menzies

From June 2013:

A van driver who killed a mother-of-three and injured 17 other people in a series of hit-and-runs around Cardiff has been detained indefinitely under the Mental Health Act...

Tvrdon, who has paranoid schizophrenia, admitted manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility. He also admitted seven counts of attempted murder and other charges including three counts of grievous bodily harm with intent...

Tvrdon was told he would be released from Ashworth maximum security hospital in Merseyside only if a mental health tribunal was satisfied he should be released. He was also given a 25-year driving ban.
