According to police, the killer took some camping items and the license plate from their 1997 GMC Jimmy SUV.

.....................

Police believe that Bauman and Haugen were randomly selected, possibly by someone angry the campers were in "his woods." It's also possible that someone spotted them and saw them as prey.
http://www.foxnews.com/story/2005/07/05/teaching-couple-dog-shot-dead-in-oregon/

Their deaths are being investigated as a double homicide, not a murder-suicide, the sheriff's office said.

.....................

Police said they have no suspects. But the Crater Lake license plates on Haugen's vehicle — number CL47763 — have been listed as stolen, officials said.

.................

Caesar, a golden retriever mix, was Haugen's best friend and constant companion on camping and fishing expeditions, Loney said.

"It does not look like their perpetrator fits our perpetrator. I'm fairly confident we're not looking for the same person," Slater said.

On July 1, 2005, campers Steven Haugen, 54, and Jeanette Bauman, 56, were shot to death at their campsite. Their dog also was shot and killed. So far, the killer has eluded sheriff's detectives.

The cases are similar in that the victims were slain in rural settings, and in both cases the victims' vehicles were left at the scene, Slater said.

Another trait the two cases share is a seemingly inexplicable motive for the killings. Haugen was a school counselor and Bauman a teacher. The killer or killers took some items, including the victims' license plate, but left behind their sport-utility vehicle.
OR OR - Jeanette Bauman and Steve Haugen murdered, Willamette National Forest, June 2005 - Websleuths Crime Sleuthing Community

On July 1, 2005, Lane County Sheriff's Office deputies responded to the report of deceased subjects off a rural spur road in Willamette National Forest, south of the town of Oakridge, Oregon. Stevan Haugen, 54, and Jeanette Bauman, 56, had been shot to death, along with Haugen's dog, Caesar. Police believe whoever shot the couple also took Haugen's license plates and possibly some fishing items.

Oregon double killing from 2005 examined for links to serial killer Israel Keyes

BBM
A timeline released by the FBI shows that in April 2005, Keyes was in Washington state and British Columbia. In July that year, two teachers were found murdered in Oregon's Willamette National Forest.

"It fits in that time frame," said Detective Sgt. Cliff Harrold of the Lane County Sheriff's Office. "It's one of the more recent cold cases that we have. It's a double homicide. We'd love to have it solved."
:waitasec: Hmmmm. Close enough for law enforcement......

The FBI timeline says:

April 20, 2005 to April 25, 2005: Washington, British Columbia
They were murdered on July 1, 2005.

Guess they feel the timeline is a little *fluid* as well......

Pardon me for overposting today, and possibly bringing up old business, but I found this while looking for information on Jeanette Bauman and Steve Haugen. There is very little information out there about this, this blog seems to be the most comprehensive:

DAVE'S AUTOMOBILE WAS FOUND IN HIS DRIVEWAY WITH THE DOORS STILL OPEN? FAMILY SAID DAVE WOULD NEVER LEAVE HIS CAR DOOR OPEN. HIS BOOM-TRUCK WAS OUT OF PLACE AND TIDY-TOOLS SCATTERED ABOUT THE DRIVEWAY. HIS WELDING TANKS WERE PULLED FROM THE TRUCK AND PLACED INSIDE HIS CABIN TO BOOM & BURN. THEY POURED ACCELERANTS ON DAVE. THE KILLERS WERE WRONG- THEY LEFT EXTRA EVIDENCE AT THE KENO CABIN. THEY CREATED MULTIPLE CRIME SITES.

Two fires — at 18196 and 12801 Dead Indian Memorial Road — were reported about an hour apart in the early morning hours of Sept. 4. Both houses burned to the ground and a man's body was found inside the cabin at the summit, where Lewis, 46, had lived for more than two decades. The other cabin, near the intersection with Keno Access Road, was a summer home occupied only on weekends, neighbors and authorities said.

"It's an odd set of circumstances to have two residences burn down at the same time in this remote location," said Winters, who owns property and spends time in the rural area in the mountains east of Ashland.

This reeks of IK to me. I know they feel there is a marijuana connection, but IMO that doesn't exclude IK.

Alrighty then!

I misunderstood Dave Lewis's blog. I thought Troy Carney was found at the cabin that was burned down the road. NOPE. He was found murdered at a truck stop!

OR OR - Troy Dean Carney, 44, murdered in Central Point, Sept 2008 - Websleuths Crime Sleuthing Community

HOLY CRAP a MASK!! (pardon my yelling)

http://truecrimediary.com/index.cfm?page=cases&id=164

From True Crime Diary blog

Troy Dean Carney, 44, was originally from Maine, but for the last several years he'd been crisscrossing the country working as a "lumper," someone who helps load and unload trucks. While waiting for more work, Carney was camping by the Greenway. He was last seen on videotape on September 1, 2008 walking away from the nearby Pilot Truck stop. His body was found three days later. Police believe he was shot in the head while sleeping in a sleeping bag hidden under some brush. There were no signs of struggle, or robbery.

Police found an abandoned campsite near the murder scene. Someone had left behind a small dome tent and some garbage. Also left behind was a yellow and black Wolverine mask. The mask was propped up eerily as if left on display.
Wolv.jpg

Two murders discovered on the same day in relatively close proximity in an area with normally very little violent crime sparked investigators' interest. Things got even more interesting when, 9 days after Carney's murder, someone returned to the scene and set fire to the campsites. Police believe it was set intentionally in an attempt to cover up evidence.

The Lewis and Carney murders now had fire in common as well. Investigators have also said they've discovered a piece of evidence linking the crimes, but they've stopped short of identifying it.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wolverine_(comics)

Artist Frank Miller collaborated with Claremont and helped to revise the character with a four-part eponymous limited series from September to December 1982 in which Wolverine's catchphrase, "I'm the best there is at what I do, but what I do best isn't very nice," debuted.
+
The character's official origin story was told in the 2001–2002 miniseries Origin. Wolverine was born as James Howlett in Alberta, Canada, in the late 1880s, to rich farm owners John and Elizabeth Howlett.[26] The "Origin" miniseries insinuates and the Wolverine Goes to Hell story later fully reveals, however, that he is actually the illegitimate son of the Howlett's groundskeeper, Thomas Logan.[27] After being thrown off the Howlett's property for violent actions perpetrated by his other son, named simply Dog, Thomas returns to the Howlett manor and kills John Howlett. In retaliation, young James kills Thomas with bone claws that emerge from the back of his hands as his mutation manifests (a traumatic event in one's youth is often the trigger for mutant powers). James is cast out by his mother (who then kills herself).[28] He flees with his childhood companion, Rose (who closely resembles Jean Grey) and grows into manhood on a mining colony in the Yukon Territory, adopting the name "Logan".[29] After accidentally killing Rose with his claws, Logan leaves the colony and lives for a time in the wilderness among wolves,[30] until returning to civilization, residing with the Blackfoot Indians. Following the death of his Blackfoot lover, Silver Fox, at the hands of Sabretooth,[31] he is ushered into the Canadian military during World War I. Logan then spends some time in Madripoor, before settling in Japan, where he marries Itsu and has a son, Daken.

During World War II, Logan teams up with Captain America[32] and continues a career as a soldier-of-fortune and adventurer. He then serves with the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion[33] during D-Day, and the CIA, before being recruited by Team X, a black ops unit.

As a member of Team X, Logan is given false memory implants. He continues on the team, until he is able to break free of the mental control and joins the Canadian Defense Ministry. Logan is subsequently kidnapped by the Weapon X program, where he remains captive and experimented on, until he escapes, as shown in Barry Windsor-Smith's "Weapon X" storyline which ran in Marvel Comics Presents. It is during his imprisonment by Weapon X that he has unbreakable adamantium forcibly fused onto his bones.

Logan is eventually discovered by James and Heather Hudson, who help him recover his humanity. Following his recovery, Logan, this time under the supervision of Department H, once again works as an intelligence operative for the Canadian government. Logan becomes Wolverine, one of Canada's first superheroes. In his first mission, he is dispatched to stop the destruction caused by a brawl between the Hulk and the Wendigo.[34]

Later on, Professor Charles Xavier recruits Wolverine to a new team of X-Men. Disillusioned with his Canadian intelligence work and intrigued by Xavier's offer, Logan resigns from Department H.[35] It was later revealed, however, that Professor X had wiped Logan's memories and forced him to join the X-Men after Wolverine was sent to assassinate Xavier.[36]

July 2001 to 2005: Keyes stated he murdered an unidentified couple in Washington. Keyes refused to tell law enforcement if the couple was married or what their relationship to one another was. It is unknown if the victims were residents of Washington, tourists, or residents he abducted from a nearby state and transported to Washington. Keyes alluded to the fact these victims were buried in a location near a valley. Keyes may have moved the victims’ car to place distance between where the vehicle was found and where the crime occurred.

From the FBI site on IK^

I believe also in his interviews he "alluded to" that the couple he killed in WA was a male/female pair and hit the male in the head and killed him (always used strangulation except Mr. Currier & gun supposedly). He says "valley" I wonder he means The Gorge/Columbia river area....maybe not, there are valleys all over WA.

I wonder if they have been found since and are unidentified, are they separated? So many questions. I wonder if they were even buried or if he really left them dead in the woods like some of the above cases?

Stodden and Cooper were mother and daughter.

Who killed two hikers near Mt. Pilchuck?
By Brian Alexander and Jennifer Sullivan
Seattle Times staff reporters
Thursday, July 13, 2006 - Page updated at 05:01 PM

... a note outside the home of one of the victims identifies them as Mary Cooper, [sic] 56, and Susanna Stodden, [sic] 27.

The pair were last seen alive at about 10 a.m. on a day hike to Pinnacle Lake, about 20 miles east of Granite Falls.
At about 2:30 p.m., another hiker called 911 after he discovered the bodies a couple of miles up the popular trail near the lake.
The Sheriff's Office declined to talk about their cause of death, other than to say the pair died by "homicidal violence."
Serial killer Keyes: ‘I would let them (victims) come to me in a remote area’
by James Lynch, Q13-FOX
December 4, 2012

“Keyes admitted to murdering four people in Washington; he killed two people (independent of each other) sometime during 2005 and 2006, and murdered a couple in Washington between 2001 and 2005,” said the FBI office in Anchorage, Alaska.
Now the question is, could Keyes have killed Cooper, 56, and Stodden, 27, in 2006?

The Pinnacle Lake murders don't fit Keyes' confessed murders precisely, but the confession shows he was active in the general area and timeframe. He lived in Neah Bay, WA, from 2001 until 2007, 195 miles (an afternoon drive for Keyes) from Pinnacle Lake and the Mount Pilchuck area. He was also known to visit friends in Port Angeles, WA, a mere 124 miles from Mount Pilchuck.

GOOGLE MAP

2005 to 2006 (summer/fall months): Keyes admitted that he committed two murders independent of one another. Keyes used his boat to dispose of the bodies of these victims. Keyes stated at least one of the bodies was disposed of in Crescent Lake in Washington where he used anchors to submerge the body. Keyes reported the body was submerged in more than 100 feet of water. Keyes may have moved the victim’s car to place distance between where the vehicle was found and where the crime occurred. The identity of these victims is unknown.

Copying content of a previous posting of mine from the big, original IK thread so that it shows Delmar as a possible victim in the PNW:

In a previous post I suggested Delmar Sample as a possible victim of IK's. I noticed there wasn't a thread for Delmar yet on WS, so I have set one up.

http://www.websleuths.com/forums/showthread.php?p=9781487#post9781487

I won't repost all of the details on this thread but here is my reasoning as to why I believe it's worth looking into further.

Del was last seen on March 4. He headed out for a weekend in the wilderness. His truck was found abandoned a couple of days later near Lake Quinault, locked with his sleeping bag and food inside.

Rationale:
1) It fits IK's M.O. IK admitted stalking people on wilderness trails or while camping. It didn't matter whether male or female or what age.

2) IK was in the area at the time, visiting local lakes ,etc. According to recently released details from the FBI, IK was spotted camping at a location only accessible by boat on March 1, and also took a day canoe trip as well as frequented the Hoko River in NW Washington on March 12 (parked his truck there). (Was he dumping Del's body?)

3) The bodies of very few of IK's victims have been found, but he did confess to dumping, on two separate occasions, a victim's body in lakes at least one of which was in NW Washington.

4) IK confessed to leaving his victims' vehicles parked away from the crime scene. (Del had told his friends that he was headed to a different area than where his truck was found although he had been known to change his plans.)

5) By all accounts Del's disappearance was surprising and out of character - so foul play is quite possible.

Thoughts?

Old death still under investigation

Investigators have said Campbell’s house was set ablaze to cover up her murder. Police have never released the cause of death or named any suspects.

Neighbors spotted the fire about 4:40 a.m. and tried to get in to help Campbell, a widow who lived alone. But they were blocked by locked doors and extreme heat, news reports from the time said.

When Campbell’s body was removed that afternoon, the community believed she had succumbed to smoke, but police soon reported that she had died in homicidal violence, likely before the fire started.

Her son, Rick Campbell, told The Mail-Tribune of Medford that he knows how his mother died because of an autopsy report he obtained as a family member, providing some closure. "Now I know what happened to Mom. It’s good to know what happened," he said. But he declined to reveal her cause of death because police asked him not to.

RUSSO There’s two districts in Washington.

KEYES Federal districts?

RUSSO Yeah. So there’s two federal districts that would probably just sort of broach with it. One in - in, uh, Spokane and Yakima are the main offices in the one. And then Seattle and Tacoma are the western district. So that’s just a dividing line I don’t know exactly where it is but pretty much, you know, Seattle and Tacoma is where most of the crimes are. Everything…

KEYES Like Ellensburg or?

RUSSO Yeah, I think that’s - that’s Ellensburg is, uh…

KEYES Ellensburg is west or east?

RUSSO No, east.

KEYES East.

RUSSO I think it’s east. Ellensburg is sort of outside of Yakima.

KEYES (Chuckles) you’re gonna need both districts then (chuckles).

http://www.fbi.gov/anchorage/video/israel-keyes-interview-may-29-2012 part of transcript from alaska interviews regarding WA victims

After listening/reading/watching the interview, this part stood out to me a little as he is very concerned on how WA districts are divided, this leads me to believe he abducted victims/disposed/committed crimes pretty much all over the state of WA, either abducted and disposed of victims in far away locations, I wonder if he is concerned where he left the bodies based on location if they are left somewhere "in the middle" of the state, is Ellensburg important or surrounding areas?
