OK - Jamie Michelle McChurin, 16, Muskogee, 18 March 1997

http://charleyproject.org/cases/m/mcchurin_jamie.html

Jamie Michelle McChurin

# Missing Since: March 18, 1997 from Muskogee, Oklahoma
# Classification: Endangered Missing
# Date Of Birth: November 21, 1980
# Age: 16 years old
# Height and Weight: 5'1, 133 pounds
# Distinguishing Characteristics: Brown hair, brown eyes. McChurin has a scar over her right eye. She has a tattoo of a heart on her right hand and several additional tattoos on her body.

Details of Disappearance

McChurin was last seen in Muskogee, Oklahoma on March 18, 1997. She had taken a taxicab to a friend's residence near the corner of F and Elmira streets. She was sitting on the front porch when her friend's mother went inside the house for a few moments. When the mother returned, she saw a large dark-colored vehicle turning the corner. There was no sign of McChurin and she has never been seen again. It is not clear if the unidentified car was involved in McChurin's disappearance. An extensive search produced few clues as to her whereabouts.

McChurin does not have a history of running away from her home. She had a job at Tastee Freez in March 1997; on the day of her disappearance, she cashed her first paycheck and spoke about purchasing a car. She has a daughter who was a year old in 1997. Authorities suspect McChurin may have been taken against her will by person(s) unknown.

Police chase new lead in teen’s disappearance
Clue gives hope for solving case of teen mom
By D.E. Smoot
Phoenix Staff Writer

Search and rescue workers swarmed across a rural area east of Summit Thursday, turning up clues that might help solve the mystery of a missing Muskogee girl.

Jamie Michelle McChurin, 16 at the time of her disappearance, has been missing more than eight years.

Bryan Farmer, the Muskogee Police Department investigator, led the canine search and rescue team to an empty farm pond southwest of Davis Field Road and South 40th Street West, where authorities found a rifle and what appeared to be an ammunition clip.

Authorities were careful not to speculate about their discovery, but they appeared confident their discovery was significant.

“We have an area of interest we are going to look at closely,” Farmer said about two hours into the search. “An old gun has been found, and the medical examiner is on the way.”

Authorities would not confirm whether a body — or body parts — had been found, but investigators from the State Medical Examiner’s Office, Muskogee County Sheriff’s and District Attorney’s offices arrived within an hour after the rifle was found.
Sheriff’s deputies set up an outpost to guard the site overnight Thursday. Excavation was scheduled to begin early today.

McChurin, who would have turned 25 on Nov. 21, had just completed her shift at Tastee Freez, which used to be across the street from Muskogee Regional Medical Center, and had taken a cab to a friend’s house. She was last seen near the corner of F and Elmira streets on March 18, 1997.

McChurin’s case wasn’t like most of the teenagers reported missing in Muskogee. She didn’t have any reason to run away: She was working at her first job, had just received her first paycheck, and was talking about getting a car.

McChurin also has a daughter, LaCressa, who was 14 months old when McChurin disappeared. The girl, now 9 years old, lives with McChurin’s mother, Vickie Williams.

Police say they have received and followed up on hundreds of tips during the past eight years, most of them leading to dead ends until now.

Farmer, who only recently inherited the case, said cadaver dogs were used to search the same area twice a couple of years ago. Those searches, he said, while not as productive as Thursday’s search, did produce a couple of hits by the dogs.

Investigators’ efforts to follow up past searches were hindered because the pond around which the search took place was full of water, a problem eliminated after the pond was drained.

“I have a really good feeling about this place,” Farmer said before the dogs began searching the area Thursday.

OK- teen missing eight years

http://www.kotv.com/main/home/storie...age=1&id=96277

http://www.kotv.com/pages/catimages/mcchurin-jamie.jpeg A grisly discovery in a rural Muskogee County may be the key to an 8 year old mystery.

Muskogee investigators found a weapon, ammunition and a bone in a rural area just southwest of Muskogee. The medical examiner is testing the bone right now to determine whether it is human or animal.

Investigators think the discovery could be linked to the case of Jamie McCurrin, who's been missing since 1997......CONTINUED....

Muskogee officials continue search for missing girl
,

ASSOCIATED PRESS

MUSKOGEE, Okla. Muskogee County law enforcement officers continued their search today of a pond near Summit for the remains of a Muskogee teenager missing since 1997.

Officers and county workers today used a pump to drain water from part of the swamp pond.

About 15 officers walked through the horseshoe-shaped pond looking for clues in the disappearance of Jamie Michelle McChurin.

McChurin was 16 at the time of her disappearance. She was last seen March 18th, 1997, sitting on the porch of a friend's house talking to her friend's mother. She had just finished work at the Muskogee Tastee-Freez.

The pump was used to drain an area where an assault rifle was found.

Cadaver dogs made several hits Thursday and Friday as they fanned out over the pond. Recovered from the mud bottom were a 10-inch bone, the rifle, a magazine clip and eight shells.......snip

If they followed leads to the pond, and had hits by cadaver dogs two years ago- why did they wait til now to follow thru on it?

A cadaver dog can "hit" on some things, as in they "get a whiff" but its not always clear where its coming from. I suspect the dogs indicated there was something around, but not necessairly the specific location.

The search for clues into the disappearance of a Muskogee girl missing since 1997 continues this week, but the discovery of a bone Thursday at nearly empty farm pond near Summit turned out to be of no help.

Wonder who the father of the Jamie's Daughter is? How about boyfriends?
It's odd they would leave the weapon right there- was it not there 2 years ago? or not found? Such a pretty girl.

Never heard of her case before. Has the father of Jamie's child been cleared as a suspect? Was she involved with drugs/ anything illegal? Since she cashed her paycheck the day of her disappearance I'm wondering if somebody wanted the money and killed her over it.
