Jane Doe Might Be Missing Mother
Daughters Search Leads To Decades-Old Case
February 14, 2008
Rock Town Weekly
BY Pete DeLea HARRISONBURG

- Nancy Austin flipped through countless photos of unidentified bodies over the years in search of her mother who went missing in 1976.

After years of research, Austin might have found out what happened to her mother, who vanished when she was 2 months old. A body that was found in Rockingham County nearly three decades ago in a wooded area fits the description.

An artist's rendering of what she probably looked like was publicized following the discovery of the body. "I was searching online and came across the picture," said Austin, 31, of Keene, Texas.

Hey Richard, I posted this also under Georgia Nolan's thread a few days ago. If they report anything here in KY, I'll post it here. I'll be in Harlan on Wednesday so I'll try to catch a copy of the newspaper and see what they say.

I tried to colorize the photo of the sculpture.

My daughter thinks this is a match, I'm on the fence.

This Doe could be one of probably many people but GJB seems like a good match - approximate date, age, height, etc. all add up - but unfortunately the victim is fairly "generic" in that there is not much that really stands out about her. Definitely there is a resemblance to the reconstruction and unless there is more to go on to encourage a rule out, she should be submitted.

Recolored with shorter lighter hair.

I am Gloria's daughter, Stephanie. Thank you so much for working on this. This isn't the first time that this Jane Doe has been brought to my attention. I had never seen the reconstruction with short blonde hair. Wow. I have recently had my DNA placed into CODIS. Perhaps there can be a DNA comparison. My contact is Detective Dana Potts, dpotts@ci.costa-mesa.ca.us, if you want to ever want to talk to him too. I will forward him this information. I can't think you enough. I also have a website for Gloria www.whereisgloriajean.com. She had an acquaintance in Virginia.

Oh my word, Please accept my offer of prayer support, I cannot imagine how you have suffered and wondered about your Mom, the wide range of emotions, for almost 40 years!! I'll keep praying that you stay strong and encouraged and that before the anniversary comes around, that you receive resolution!!!
DNA is available (not in CODIS) so this should be fairly quick to get an answer!!

Jessunlil: Great work on the photos!!

Any leads or information on the acquaintance?

What are the chances your mom could have traveled from Atlanta to WV?

The Doe web page, below, mentions something about her being a seamstress or hairdresser, based on some physical characteristics of her front teeth. Do you have any pictures of your mom smiling? Were her front teeth bottoms/tops ridged or slightly chipped? Was she an avid seamstress or hairdresser?

The picture you have, is the only picture I have unfortunately. I don't have any leads either. I've been trying to figure out who the three men were that everyone has told me about, i.e. seen in a house with three men, three men seen with her by her former mother-in-law, and seen leaving a party in Atlanta with three men. Not sure if the three men were all the same. If I could find out more about these three men, I might be able to figure out more. The one witness who claimed to have seen her leave the party with three men, made that declaration to her brother, and has yet (seemed) to refuse to talk to me personally. Not sure of the likelihood of her having traveled to WV. Her car was found in Atlanta; so, she would have had to travel with someone....a trucker perhaps.... or 'three men.' She didn't have family in WV. I don't think that she was a seamstress of any sort when she had me. No one has said anything about her doing that sort of thing at a young age. She liked to party. That's what I know. Her father was a dentist; so, I imagine that her teeth were in good shape. Her dental records have unfortunately been destroyed. I wish I had a picture of her smiling.... I have a pretty big smile, and I often think of her that way too.

I came across Heart Doe in looking at another case, and became fascinated. There are a lot of possible matches...

Here is her link to doenetwork: http://www.doenetwork.org/cases/568ufva.html

Case History
The victim was located in a secluded wooded area, in the George Washington National Forest, off of Virginia Route 33 in Rockingham County, Virginia. The body was partially in a grave, and it was apparent that there was foul play involved.
This route is not a normal trucking route and runs through this county into West Virginia.
There was a 1964 coin located and the death appears to have occurred between 1964 and early 1979.
There was evidence with the dental work that suggests that the person could have possibly been a seamstress. She could have possibly been a hairdresser, or possibly had some type of habit where she kept a bobby pin or pins in between her teeth.
