A family accidentally took in a cat bigger than their own child after misreading his measurements.

Kristine Seguin chose Alex the cat for her 10-year-old daughter Amelie thinking he was 19lb, not 19kgs.

It took two people to even carry him out of the animal shelter and into Kristine’s car as he was so heavy the bottom of the cat carrier began to rip.

The family have now put seven-year-old Axel on a diet, as he can barely walk without panting and rolling over.

That's awful. I wonder how long he had been at the shelter and how much weight he had lost there already.

The story is actually a good one for the cat. The shelter wouldn't have let just anyone adopt him if they thought they weren't going to give him the care he needs.

The family who adopted him have him on a diet and from what they said he is fitter than he was, but they also have a target weight for him. So it sounds like he is lucky they adopted him.
There are many who just wouldn't bother.

I think the story may have been confused with @scandinavian girl's post about her cat who died of liver disease.
