AL AL - Lilliam Max, 46, barber shop owner, took bus to Atlanta, Birmingham, 2 May 2021

UPDATE: Missing Cullman salon owner may have ‘just left’ according to CPD

“Lt. Martin talked with WBRC FOX6 News reporter Clare Huddleston Wednesday.

Martin said he doesn’t believe 47-year-old Max was going to Atlanta. She had lived in Cullman for nine years.

There are no records of her arriving as a passenger in Atlanta. She told people she had an immigration appointment in Atlanta, but immigration officials said she never had a hearing or appointment.

Lt. Martin said Max was last seen getting on a bus at the Greyhound station in Birmingham at 10:10 p.m. Martin said Max was driven to the Birmingham, Alabama bus terminal by a friend and arrived at approximately 1:00 p.m. on May 2, 2021 to board a bus bound for Atlanta, Georgia. Max’s cell phone stopped working at approximately the same time she arrived at the bus terminal.

Max’s name was not found on passenger lists for arrivals at the Atlanta, Georgia bus station.

Lt. Martin said it is now believed Max was not a legal resident in the United States but from Honduras, not Mexico. Max has ties to New York and California, but she has no known family members in Alabama.”

Her cell phone stopped working the same that she arrived at the Birmingham bus terminal. Her name was not on a passenger list going to Atlanta.

She had lived in Cullman for 9 years.

I speculate she came to Cullman from Los Angeles, California. It’s possible she moves around due to her immigration status, I hope she is safe somewhere.

Police: Missing woman may have left voluntarily

With no evidence of outside foul play, and with additional evidence suggesting Max may not have followed the itinerary she had described to friends before departing, police suspect that she may have voluntarily made herself hard to trace.

Police now believe “Lillian Max” may be an alias or a variation of her real name.

Police also related additional circumstantial evidence suggesting Max may have had motive to voluntarily leave Cullman, including unpaid utility bills, late business rent, and a cessation in her cellular service around the time of her departure.

Police will continue to treat Max’s disappearance as a missing persons case, though the investigation has shifted from possible suspicion of foul play to one of attempting to confirm her overall welfare.

Details of Disappearance

Max was last seen when she boarded a Greyhound bus in Birmingham, Alabama, en route to Atlanta, Georgia, on May 2, 2021. She borrowed $500 for the trip and said she had to go to a legal hearing regarding her immigration status. She has never been heard from again.

Authorities subsequently learned there was no hearing scheduled for her in Atlanta, and she may have never arrived there. She was reported missing on May 7, after she missed several appointments back in Alabama. She left all her belongings behind.

Max had lived in Cullman, Alabama for about a decade prior to her disappearance, and had previously lived in New York and California. She was well-known in the local community and operated a business, the Estetica Lilliam hair salon in the Creel Plaza.

Her friends believed she was from Mexico and a legal, permanent resident trying to get her citizenship. However, police stated she was actually from Honduras and was not a legal U.S. resident at the time of her disappearance.

Prior to her disappearance, Max had cancelled her cellular phone service. The rent for her business was left unpaid, as were utility bills. Investigators think Max left of her own accord and may not want to be found. They also think "Lilliam Max" may not be her real name.

Her case remains unsolved. She will remain listed as a missing person until her whereabouts and well-being are verified.
