"Knowing her the way I know her, I just I can’t imagine why she would have made her way into that space. It’s just not sinking in," Macy said.

Macy said the family is taking solace from support in the community, but that Allyson leaves a void behind.

"I miss holding her hand, I miss sitting next to her during sleepovers, I miss I just miss a future with her. I want nothing more than to grow old with her. She’s my wonderful little niece," she said.

Deputy van Kleef said they should know the cause of death from the medical examiner in the next few weeks. He anticipates that will guide the investigation moving forward.

Last year, it was a Christmastime, community-wide effort, with "missing person" flyers plastered nearly everywhere around town. The Washington County Sheriff's Office told KATU News those flyers drove them to keep looking.

"That kind of outpouring of love and support just shows how much that she was cared for by her family, her friends, and her community. That spurs us along, too," said Washington County sheriff's Sgt. Robert Rookhuyzen.

But Rookhuyzen said they're still waiting for test results from the state's medical examiner and still waiting for tips from the community.

[...]

"The investigation still needs to determine whether this is a homicide, a tragic accident, or something else. And so, we've got to be very open and objective to all those possibilities still," Rookhuyzen said.

[...]

“I’m sure Washington County has done the job they feel like they deemed necessary and all the right protocols -- I’m not here to say whether they have or not -- but we are on our own over here," she told KATU News. “Until some of those gaps are filled in, we are sitting here thinking the worst.”

Garland has not been named a suspect in the case.

At this point, the sheriff's office can't say for sure how Watterson died.

"I think that’s always a possibility that we will never know exactly what happened. But we are not ready to give up on that yet. We are still working this case. And it’s still an active investigation and until we follow up on every lead there is this case will remain open," said Deputy Brian van Kleef with the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff's office says there are a lot of moving parts to the investigation and they are still waiting for the results of some forensic tests - handling the little evidence they have with great care.

On Dec. 22, 2019, a homeowner in the North Plains area was the last to see Watterson alive shortly before noon. According to the homeowner, Watterson, 20, and Benjamin Hunter asked if they could use the phone because they had run into car trouble.

After making a call, the pair left.

The homeowner later recalled Hunter was in stockinged feet because he had given Watterson his shoes since she had lost hers.

The following morning, Hunter allegedly told a second homeowner he got separated from friends, NBC News reported, and the person offered him a ride home.

[...]

In April 2020, between the time Watterson went missing and when her remains were located, Hunter, 22, took a deal and pleaded guilty to three charges against him unrelated to his girlfriend’s disappearance — unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, fraudulent use of a credit card and second-degree theft, the Washington County district attorney said.

According to law enforcement officials, Hunter admitted to stealing a Ford F-150 several days before Watterson vanished, using another person’s cell phone to order and pay for a ride share, and stealing $700 worth of merchandise from a grocery store.

Hunter was sentenced to three years in state prison and ordered to serve two years of supervision after his release.
