'Noodles'

On September 28, a man became unwell on the Amsteldijk near the Toronto Bridge. A passerby called the emergency services who tried in vain to resuscitate him.
The middle-aged man was short and had striking blue eyes. Reddish hair, a well-groomed beard with mustache. He was dressed in casual clothes, not hand-me-down junk. Expensive Adidas shoes. Overall he made a fairly decent impression, he was certainly not an out-of-date type.

The police searched his pockets, the man was not carrying anything that could identify him. Detectives investigated the Amsteldijk and found nothing that resembled a crime.
Nor were any traces found on and in the body, which was carefully examined in the police mortuary in the VU Medical Center, indicating an unnatural death. DNA was taken and run through missing persons databases without results.
The gentleman was not a drug user, nor did he appear to have indulged in excessive drinking. No tattoos, but some scars, probably the result of an appendectomy.

A lengthy police investigation began. The man's teeth were in less good condition, downright bad even. He wore several sweaters on top of each other and a cardigan over that.
It wasn't that cold in those days, unless you had to spend the night on the street. Inquiries with homeless agencies and other social organizations yielded no results; the man was not known in those circles.

Search notices with a post-mortem photo were sent and the local media paid attention to the unknown deceased. Finally, two interesting witnesses came forward.

The first, a lady from Ireland, said that the man had been living somewhere in the Pijp for several years. She is said to have spoken to him there several times. His English was excellent, she suspected some academic training.
The man had told her he was from Norway. A beautiful country, said the Irish woman. A terrible country, the man replied. He never wanted to return to it for unexplained reasons.
The man said that he had cycled from Norway to the Netherlands, via Denmark and Germany. The man's bicycle was never found by the police.

The other witness was the manager of a night shop <convenience store that is open during late hours> in De Pijp. The man is said to have regularly bought packets of noodles there. He loved noodles and bought them in different flavors.
He had also complained about Norway to the man at the convenience store and told him that he had fled the country by bicycle.

The police called in the help of Norwegian colleagues, who started working based on the description but could not find anything. No one has reported him missing in his supposed home country. The case was adjourned, the body released.

On Wednesday, December 21, at half past nine in the morning, the body, which after a long period in the police mortuary, had been in the refrigeration of Uitvaartcentrum Zuid for quite some time, arrived in a gray Mercedes at the Sint Barbara cemetery. Four bearers lift the simple coffin with a simple flower arrangement into the auditorium.

I play two pieces by Edvard Grieg, on the assumption that the deceased, despite his aversion to his homeland, could have appreciated the work of this Norwegian composer. And, as a tribute to the almost perfect disappearing act he pulled off on himself, Janáček's Tagebuch eines Verschollenen .
