Yukon RCMP Historical Case Unit seeks public assistance in a homicide investigation | Royal Canadian Mounted Police
July 26, 2021
Whitehorse, Yukon

''Last seen: May 26, 2007 in Whitehorse, Yukon

Remains found: November 9, 2007

Angel Carlick, 19, was just about to graduate high school. She was a hard worker at a non-profit organization in Whitehorse, running a dinner program where she would cook meals for children. She enjoyed music and painting. Angel, a youth advocate, was involved in the community. She was caring and was seen as a big sister to her brother and loyal to her friends. Angel had a bright future ahead of her.

On the evening of May 26, Angel left a friend's place and went to downtown Whitehorse on her bike. Later that night, she called her best friend from a payphone, making plans to join her friends. She was then last seen walking away from Main Street with one or several people. This was probably the last time anyone heard from her or saw her.

Nearly six months after she disappeared, Angel's remains were discovered by a walker in a wooded area in Pilot Mountain, just north of Whitehorse, Yukon. It is not known whether she died in the area where her body was found.

Angel has not been forgotten and the investigation into her death continues. Angel's family and friends are searching for answers, justice, and understanding. The police are actively using all available resources to find the person responsible. Anyone with any knowledge about this is encouraged to come forward.

Sadly Angel's mother, Wendy Margaret Carlick, an advocate for MMIWG, was also found murdered.

''On April 19, the RCMP found the bodies of Wendy Margaret Carlick, 51, and Sarah Macintosh, 53. Their deaths are being investigated as a dual-homicide.''

''Carlick was an advocate for the families of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls, having lost her own daughter in 2007. The murder of Angel Edna Carlick remains unsolved — the fourth case referred to by the chief.''

"The deaths of Carlick and MacIntosh are not believed to be related to the death of Dawson at this time and there’s no current evidence to relate the three deaths to the murder of Angel Carlick in 2007, according to the information provided to the RCMP by the major crime unit.''

''In the highly-anticipated 8th season of Someone Knows Something, award-winning investigator David Ridgen delves into the cold case that has haunted Whitehorse for more than 15 years. As David works alongside Angel's family, friends, and community, he uncovers details surrounding her death and strives to bring her justice, while honouring the legacy of her late mother, Wendy. The Angel Carlick investigation is coming September 18, 2023. New episodes every Monday for 7 weeks. ''

''Nov 10, 2021
It’s been 14 years since the body of 19-year-old Angel Carlick was discovered on a mountainside near Whitehorse. The 19-year old Kaska woman was from Dease Lake in northern B.C. and moved to Whitehorse where she was a youth advocate who ran a dinner program for children. The police are asking for the public to step forward with any information they may have about her murder. Angel went missing in May of 2007. No one has been charged with Angel’s murder. The Yukon RCMP’s historical case unit is, again, putting out a call for assistance.''

Description Angel Edna Carlick, 19, worked at The Youth of Today Society — the same downtown Whitehorse, Yukon resource centre she said changed her life. Shortly after her high school graduation, on May 27, 2007 Carlick was seen for the last time in the city. Nearly six months later, a hiker found her body in a wooded area in Pilot Mountain, Yukon near Whitehorse. The city’s RCMP is investigating the homicide, and Carlick’s friend and former colleague says officers contact her each year in April with updates. The last she heard, three officers are working on the case.

The 19-year old Kaska woman was from Dease Lake in northern B.C. and moved to Whitehorse where she was a youth advocate who ran a dinner program for children.

Angel went missing in May of 2007.

“The last time we saw her we went with her to the place she was working downtown,” says her uncle William Carlick. “She was cooking up and she was serving soup. She was happy then, too.”

William says he copes with their deaths through ceremony.

“You just have to understand that we had time to share with them and when they leave whichever way happens we just got to continue because one day we’re going to make that journey too,” he said.

No one has been charged with Angel’s murder.

Her remains were discovered nearly six months later on Nov. 9, 2007 by a walker in a wooded area on Pilot mountain near Whitehorse

While Carlick’s death was ruled a homicide, Cst. Michael Simpson says the pathologist who examined her remains could not determine her cause of death.

It’s also not known if she died in the area where her body was found.

Angel Carlick’s mother, Wendy Carlick, was murdered in 2017 along with her friend Sarah MacIntosh in 2017 in Whitehorse. Wendy was known in the community as a missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls advocate after the murder of her daughter.

Wendy and Sarah's cases have been solved. A man named Everett Chief was arrested and convicted, sentenced to eighteen years in prison.

Unfortunately, Angel's case remains unsolved.

As to why Carlick’s case has never been solved after so many years, Simpson says there have been challenges.

For instance, he says Carlick was last seen with two males before she disappeared who have not been identified.

“I think they would hold the answers, or at least begin telling me where to look next,” he says.

impson says there’s also a lack of evidence in her case, like DNA profiles and witnesses, not to mention a long span of time between when she was last seen and when her remains were found.

"There were very, very few other details other than some rumors around town about what happened to Angel. There was some American serial killer who had been around and people were trying to connect that to Angel. And there was another fellow who had been beaten to death in Whitehorse who people were trying to connect to Angel's disappearance.

In the podcast, my aim was to look at some of these rumors and see if I could dispel them and then also find out what Angel's timeline was. Because the timeline is the most important thing to set up before you start walking down the road of any investigation. Where was Angel? Who saw her? Who was available to see her last? Who did police talk to? Who are police willing to tell me they talked to that said they saw Angel in those last moments? And basically just trying to figure out where Angel was across that weekend of May 26, 2007. ''
