It looks like Namus 2.0 has broken all the Namus links.

The recent Charley Project upgrade broke all the Charley link.

Should we have an organized effort to put up the new links? Or just fix them as we find them?

Hi carbuff,

What do you mean exactly? Does it mean that all WS posts with NamUs or Charlie Project links will now be broken due to software upgrades on their part?
Could you please link an example, tia? I will definitely help how I can...

margarita25, both Charley Project and NamUs have redone their websites in 2018. Both websites changed the formats their links were in.

Let's have some examples:

For NamUs, old links used to look like this: https://www.findthemissing.org/en/cases/10038/ (Missing Persons) and now look like this https://www.namus.gov/MissingPersons/Case#/10038 LUCKILY, NamUs redirects.

Old unidentified links looked like this https://identifyus.org/en/cases/9736 and now look like this https://www.namus.gov/UnidentifiedPersons/Case#/9736

Charley Project links DO NOT redirect. The old ones look like this: http://charleyproject.org/cases/s/scrima_jeanne.html and the new ones like this http://charleyproject.org/case/jeanne-marie-scrima

In short, a lot of new linking to be done! Mostly with Charley as they do not redirect.

Fix-as-we-find seems like it would be less crazy-making. Then maybe people could sort of "adopt" sections of less-active threads on a voluntary basis?

Either way -- this is gonna require one heck of a spreadsheet to keep track. :scared:

Carbuff, I ditto that, very annoying. I think we should wait after WS does their upgrade/move too... and then to come up with some plan for all the cases as their are thousands of them.

I have suggested to Charley Project few weeks ago to link her old link/cases and redirect them to her cases on her new page. As her old links open at her new page anyway but just at empty page it should be possible. She said she will talk to her IT man. It would be good if they did as it would be reall pity to have over decade of her work wiped up with press off the button.

Oh, Rats that is great to hear that new Namus does redirect old links! So no work needed on that then. Hopefully redirecting is not just for certain period of time.

Yeah, my concern was that it's temporary and we'll eventually have to do it anyway.

We already went through this a few years back when the Doenetwork upgraded. I seem to recall that CarlK, Cubby, and the other moderators went through and actually fixed the links.

I think we had volunteers go thread by thread, post by post to update the doe network links, but that was easy because (iirc) all we had to do was change .us to .org

And WS was much smaller then... I'm not sure how things would work now. It's been a long time since I moderated. Maybe we will have to update the OP? But that doesn't help with links to possible matches.

I'm open to ideas.

That is so frustrating that everything needs to be redone. :( You'd think in this day and age there'd be a general consensus to redirect to prevent dead links.

I think the NAMPN links are all toast, too. They seem to be generating malware.

Yes, Nampn was run by one person only, the same as Charley Project. Lady from Nampn strugled last few years and decided to shut it down completely few month ago. So unfortunately all that great work and information vanished with press of the button.
