''Authorities are seeking help in the unsolved murder of an Orange County man found stabbed to death in 1993.

The victim was identified as Alan Jay Schwalbe, 61, by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

On Aug. 11, 1993, Schwalbe was found fatally stabbed inside his home on the 300 block of 22nd Street in an unincorporated area of Costa Mesa.

There appeared to be no evidence of a struggle nor signs of forced entry, authorities said. His home also did not appear to be ransacked.

Despite investigators’ efforts, no suspect leads were obtained as the cold case remained unsolved over the years.

Several items collected at the crime scene were re-submitted for forensic testing. Authorities are hoping new technologies can uncover evidence that was previously undetectable.

“The technology used to process forensic evidence is continuously growing and expanding,” said Investigator Bob Taft, who has specialized in cold cases for the sheriff’s department for the past six years. “Items that may have been undetectable just a few short years ago now have the possibility of being discovered and these discoveries can foster new investigative leads. In addition to new technology, people’s friendships, alliances and associations change over time. People who may have been reluctant to come forward during the original investigation may feel more at ease coming forward now because of a change in these associations.”

Anyone with information is asked to call the Orange County Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau at 714-647-7055 or emailcoldcase@ocsheriff.gov.''

Anonymous tips can be submitted by calling the Orange County Crime Stoppers at 714-628-7675 or online at occrimestoppers.org

Background info.
“He was certainly one of the pillars of the (gay) community when it came to financial support,” said Rus Calisch, a friend and fellow activist. “He extended a helping hand to anyone who needed it.”

Calisch and others said Schwalbe often hired homeless people to do maintenance on the various properties he owned around the county. Once a few years ago, recalled activist Jeff Laterno, Schwalbe offered his home to a stranger who was destitute and dying of AIDS.
.................
He taught history at Rea Elementary and TeWinkle Middle School in Costa Mesa, and at Corona del Mar High School in Newport Beach, from 1961 until 1974, when he was convicted of 11 counts of child molestation and resigned.

Deputy Dist. Atty. Carl Armbrust, who prosecuted the case, said Schwalbe hired two teen-age boys who were his students to help clean apartments he owned, then showed them pornographic movies and had sex with them at the empty apartments.

I think we may have found a motive.

''Gov. Gavin Newsom is offering a $50,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the 1993 murder of Alan Schwalbe, a gay rights activist and real estate investor found stabbed to death in his Costa Mesa home.''

''He was found lying in a pool of blood on the kitchen floor, having been stabbed in the upper body several times. Nearby, the tap of a kitchen sink was still running, a reporter noted.''

''A deputy district attorney who prosecuted the case told the Los Angeles Times in 1993 Schwalbe reportedly hired two male teenage students to clean apartments he owned, then watched pornographic movies and engaged in intercourse with them. He was sentenced to serve six months in jail.''

What would that motive or motives be? Does the motive matter as much as getting the Name of the individuals? thank you Laura Bejerano Alan Schwalbe's Daughter

I'm thnking a motive of those who he molested or a family member? I went to high school with either a family member of the molested or family friend. It is certainly tragic for what happened and I paid a very big price for what my father did. Please keep in mind Alan's family for which I am one paid dearly for his terrible actions.

Thank you for posting this I hope that all those who received the reward yesterday get solved. Alan Schwalbe is my dad and as a human he deserves justice. I do not justify his incredibly horrific past though he did good too. My family did pay dearly for his horriffic actions.

Welcome to Ws @LBejerano!
Sorry for all that your family went through, hoping answers are found soon.

I got a name of a potential individual I'm unsure if this is a nickname or real name but there was a man named "bully" or "Billy" trying to get clarification he disappeared after the murder of Alan Schwalbe and hasn't been heard of since.

Just 10 minutes ago someone and I talked and they want to be anonymous there was a nickname or name given "Bully" Or "Billy?" That disappeared soon after my father Alan Schwalbe was murdered. Governor Newsome two days ago issued a $50,000 reward any sleuths out there that can figure it out? I will update once I get more clarification. Thank you all so much
Hi welcome to WS!

To clarify, you are looking for a missing person case, someone with the nickname Bully or Billy around the time of your father Alan Schwalbe’s murder?

Alan Schwalbe’s murder was in 1993 in Costa Mesa, California. So the missing person went missing in 1993 in Costa Mesa, California? Or somewhere else?

Hi everyone,

@LBejerano has now been verified as being Alan's daughter. (A bit swamped here so it will take me a few minutes to get their avatar to reflect that status and get her added to our list of Verified Members.)

As always, please treat our verified member with respect. Do not bicker with them or badger them for information they are not comfortable with sharing or unable to share for whatever reason.

Thank you to LBejerano and all other Websleuthers who are here to discuss Alan's case with a view to resolution and ultimately justice which is long overdue.

Welcome LBejerano! I hope police get some good tips with this initiative.
Thank you for your kindness. I am hoping to complete the book within the year in order to offer an award from its proceeds to match the Governor's. I've been working on my dad's case with the Sheriff's for 30 1/2 years and I am hoping for success.
