HIGHLANDS Skeletal remains that may belong to a human or an animal were discovered by a boater Sunday morning at the Sandy Hook Bay Marina, off Willow Street in Highlands, according to State Police.
State Police spokeswoman Sgt. Jeanne Hengemuhle said borough police were alerted to the discovery by a boater around 10:30 a.m., and State Police were notified about 11:40 a.m.
She said a forensic exam will be conducted today by the Monmouth County Medical Examiner's office to determine if the bones are from a human.
Hengemuhle said the skeletal remains were found floating in the water by a boater, who she did not identify. She could not say if the remains found were freestanding or were contained in something. Hengemuhle also could not say whether the remains found had any flesh or hair on them.
State troopers and local police were at the scene Sunday during heavy rain. The officers there would provide no details about the investigation.
