''25 years ago, Montreal police constable Odette Pinard was shot and killed inside a police station in the middle of a snowstorm. Over two decades later, her death remains one of the city's most notorious cold cases. The police officer was shot a single time in the head in November 1995 while she was working alone at a new community police station in Cartierville. A few months later, another Montreal Urban Community Police constable, André Lalonde was killed. Five years ago, Global's Mike Armstrong sat down with Odette's parents to reflect on the 20th anniversary of Odette's death. He met the Pinards at their home in Quebec City, the same home where they raised their daughter. Maybe the biggest thing that’s changed in the neighbourhood is the name of the street behind them: A few years ago, the city renamed it Rue Odette Pinard.''

''20 years ago today, Agent Odette Pinard was shot dead in the middle of a Montreal police station. Still unsolved, this murder left a gaping wound in the hearts of the victim's parents.

“Even if they find the culprit, it won't alleviate what I feel: absence. At each family reunion, the little one is no longer there, ”drops the policeman's father, reached by phone at his home in Quebec.

The pain is still sharp for Yvon Pinard and his wife Madeleine Dupont, two decades after the death of their daughter.

They only have unforgettable memories of her. And a photo accompanying a medal of the young woman on the wall of their kitchen.

Odette Pinard was assassinated on November 27, 1995, behind the counter at the community station in Cartierville, north of Montreal. There are only two women who have been killed on duty in the history of the Montreal police.

The mother of two, who had just returned from leave, was replacing a colleague''.

''A suspect entered, shot her in the head and left without a trace.

The 30-year-old policewoman didn't even have time to draw her gun. It was 4 p.m.''

''Who was Odette Pinard?
  • 30 years
  • Originally from Quebec
  • Married to a policeman
  • Mother of two
  • Police officer for 10 years at the Montreal Urban Community
No protection

There was no bulletproof glass in front of the counter, no bars. There was no camera in the room.

No one witnessed the scene. It was a citizen who discovered the agent inanimate at her office a few minutes later.

Yvon and Madeleine Pinard learned of the death of their youngest daughter on the 6 p.m. newscast.

“They announced that a policewoman had just died murdered. We knew very well that it was Odette, she was the only woman to work in this position, ”says Mr. Pinard, suppressing a sob.''

''March 1996: The composite of a potential suspect is made public. He is a man between 45-50 years old, tall and thin, with wavy white hair.''

''Hypotheses studied
  • Revenge against the police
  • Personal revenge
  • Street gang initiation
  • Hatred of women or authority
  • Intimidation of law enforcement
  • Diversion to commit theft elsewhere''
''To date, investigators believe that it was the uniform that was targeted, and not policewoman Pinard personally.''

WHO KILLED THERESA?
''At approximately 4:00 pm, Agent Pinard was alone at Station 1A while writing an event report. A few minutes later, a passer-by discovers her unconscious at her desk, shot in the face with a firearm. She died at the Sacré-Coeur Hospital Center. Aged 30, Odette Pinard had been with the Service for almost ten years. She left behind her husband, himself a policeman in Montreal, and her two children. This homicide remains unresolved.''

MUC police say they are close to making arrests in connection with the murder of Odette Pinard. The policewoman was shot in the head in November 1995 while she was working at a new community police station in Cartierville.

Until now, police haven't had any leads in the case, but Le Journal de Montreal newspaper reports arrests could be made soon. Commander Andre Bouchard says MUC police are working with very important information. He says once the suspects have been arrested, police will be able to explain why the investigation took so long to complete.
