''RICHMOND (NEWS 1130) — One man has been killed, and responding officers were fired upon in a brazen, daylight shooting at Vancouver International Airport that police say is related to the ongoing gang conflict in the Lower Mainland.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team has been called in, and provided an update Sunday evening.

Sgt. Frank Jang says the 28-year-old shooting victim was known to police. No arrests have been made, but he says investigators are looking for at least two suspects. Police are asking anyone with dashcam footage to contact the Richmond RCMP or IHIT.''

''The Richmond RCMP said when officers were called to the domestic departure terminal, they “intercepted the getaway vehicle” and were shot at by the suspects. No officers were hurt.''

''Soon after the shooting, a vehicle was found burning in Surrey. At that point the RCMP had not officially made a link to the ongoing gang conflict''

''After the shooting, an SUV departed the area with at least two more people inside, Jang told reporters.
The vehicle was found about 17 miles from the scene of the shooting -- and the vehicle was found burning in the 9700 block of Princess Drive.
IHIT is asking residents who were driving along the route from the airport to the area where the vehicle was found to contact them, especially if they may have dashcam video.
Jang said that IHIT will be working with airport teams to access all surveillance cams.
The investigation is ongoing.''

“RCMP have identified the victim of a fatal shooting at Vancouver International Airport on Sunday as a longtime gang associate who was the subject of a rare public warning more than three years ago.

Karman Grewal, 28, was shot and killed outside the airport's departures terminal in front of several witnesses around 3 p.m. PT.

He was well known to police, officers said Monday, and his death is believed to be related to the ongoing gang conflict in B.C.'s Lower Mainland. More than 10 people have been shot since mid-April.....

......RCMP faced a series of questions Monday as to how the suspects escaped the airport, known as YVR.

The airport is secluded on an island in Richmond, B.C., with a dedicated police and security presence. The major routes and bridges off the island were shut down after the shooting, but the suspects were able to get away.

Police intercepted the getaway vehicle — described as a red or maroon Honda Pilot — but suspects shot at the responding officers. They did not fire back or chase the suspects out of concern someone in the area might get hurt, officials said....”

......Grewal had previously been targeted in a gang-related shooting. RCMP released his photo, along with those of four other men, after a series of shootings in 2017. Officers said the men were still targets and a threat to public safety, as they had not co-operated with investigators.

Two of the five men included in the public warning are now dead, including Grewal.

"If someone remains in the gang lifestyle, it stops in only one of two ways: jail or death. It's as simple as that," said McDonald......”

''One driver even captured the suspects’ SUV fleeing the scene, firing at Richmond RCMP as they chased after the killers.

IHIT’s Sgt. Frank Jang said investigators are still looking for dash cam video of the Grewal killers’ maroon-coloured Honda Pilot after it fled the airport and ended up in Surrey in the 9700-block of Princess Drive about 3:30 p.m.

RCMP Assistant Commissioner Dwayne McDonald explained Monday how the suspects got away despite the best efforts of police at the scene and the use of an RCMP helicopter.

“When criminals commit crime, they don’t play by the rules. They’re not practising the speed limit. They don’t stop for police. And they drive at high and reckless speeds, in order to get away. So it becomes difficult no matter how quick the response,” he said. “And notwithstanding the fact that we had police officers on scene immediately and that we used air resources … the suspects were able to break containment.”

''Solicitor General Mike Farnworth is meeting with chiefs of police this week to discuss the violence.

He said the police responded “very quickly” to the airport shooting and “are working extremely hard on this case.”

The B.C. government has been working with Ottawa to tackle the problem of illegal guns and gangs in the country, Farnworth said.

“We are working with them to ensure that there’s been beefed-up security at the border, hopefully to be able to interdict illegal weapons coming across from the U.S.,” he said.''
