Deborah Smykalla, centre, with older sister Elke, left, and younger sister Diana shortly before Deborah was killed.
Deborah Smykalla began Father’s Day 1981 with a visit to the home of her parents, dropping off a gift of chocolates and flowers.

She ended the day dead at her share house at Capalaba on Brisbane’s bayside, strangled with a dog leash and found lying with her head in an oven in a brutal murder staged to look like a suicide. Almost 38 years later, with the crime still unsolved, Deborah’s sister Elke Hall is generating new leads with a Facebook group, Who Murdered Deborah Smykalla — Father’s Day Sept 1981 in Brisbane?

``Whoever killed Deborah tried to blow up the house, turning on the gas oven and lighting two fires on the floor. A safety feature in the modern oven cut the gas off and foiled the plan.

A housemate returned home at about 9.35pm to find her body, the dog lead still around her neck.``

``Coroner WJ Randall concluded that she was murdered by a person or persons unknown.``

Twist in case of woman strangled with a dog leash almost 40 years ago

``Police have released new details of a person they are yet to speak to over the murder of a woman on Brisbane’s Bayside almost 40 years ago.

Deborah Smykalla, then 22, was strangled to death in her home 37 years ago and her family is desperate for justice.

But decades on, detectives believe a former housemate of Ms Smykalla’s, known only by the nickname Bluey, could hold vital information.

That person has never been identified or spoken to by police, but officers remain hopeful someone can help track them down.``

``“She apparently was ironing and someone has come up behind her and ended her life.

“They did think at the time that she knew the person, because there wasn’t a break in.`
``Now Ms Hall has started a Facebook page sharing stories of her sister’s life and death in the hope those who hold vital clues will finally come forward``

Apparently BLUEY is a nickname for someone with red hair, imo.
Sister’s pain: My sweet Deb was strangled with a dog lead
The police also revealed that a former flatmate, only known as Bluey, could hold vital information.

However, this Bluey had never been identified or spoken to and now officers are hopeful someone can help track them down.

The motive and the murderer remain a mystery.

If you know anything about Deb’s death, please do the right thing and come forward.``

New reward to find Queensland woman Deborah Smykalla's killer

Police have renewed their search for the killer of Queensland woman Deborah Smykalla, who was found strangled to death in her home with a dog lead more than 40 years ago.
A new $500,000 reward has been offered for anyone with information that may lead police to the 22-year-old's killer.
Smykalla was found dead in her Redlands home around 9.45pm on September 6, 1981.

She was found on the kitchen floor with a dog lead wound around her neck as a small fire burned in the room.
"There was a small fire in the kitchen that was smouldering on police arrival and an overturned heater on the carpet," a statement read.
"Police believe an unknown person attempted to set the house alight."

Smykalla lived at the Capalaba house with several housemates and three dogs.
On the day of her murder, Smykalla was seen in her yard with a man in his 20s who was described as thin with short brown hair.
"Later at approximately 7.30pm, two people were observed to be sitting on the front porch," police said.
"Detectives would like to speak with these people or anyone with information about their identities."
