A 1985 unsolved homicide:

RaffaellaGBryant.jpg

Rafaella G. Bryant, age 20
Murdered 16 July 1985

On Tuesday, July 16, 1985 at 5:30 am, Virginia Beach 9-1-1 received a report of a car fire in the 4100 block of First Court Road. The Fire Department along with Police responded and found a vehicle completely consumed with fire. Once the fire was extinguished, a body was found inside the passenger compartment of a 1972 green Dodge Swinger with a vinyl top bearing a Pennsylvania license plate. Fire and Police investigators converged on the scene and began a very exhaustive investigation. Fire investigators discovered the fire was intentionally set after the car was driven into the field where it was found.

The body was transported to the State Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsy. The cause of death was asphyxia and the manner a homicide. The body was identified as Raffaella G. Bryant, a mother, who worked at an oceanfront restaurant, the Lemon Tree, located at 18th Street and Atlantic Avenue. She had last been seen leaving her employment around midnight to pick her son up at the babysitters and before returning home. Raffaella’s purse was found along Shore Drive about a mile from Atlantic Avenue.

Raffaella was a 20 year old white female who had dark brown eyes with black hair. She was 5’6’’ tall weighing 125 pounds.

Very interesting. This peaked my curiosity. Checked out the older post from an above thread. Then I took a look at the VB Cold Case Unit. There were possible additional female victims for that time period. As we all know not only were the 1970's and 1980's a nationwide turbulent crime time, we were also on the cusp of forensic transition. I lived near VB during some of the time period and also went to Tidewater Community College for a photography course. I remember that they wanted females to be walked to their cars and/or classes. If anyone knows more about these cases please post.

Note: This unsolved murder occurred during Operation Desert Storm, at a time when many Naval Reservists had been called up to active duty.

I do not have any update on this specific DNA potential match. However, I recently spoke with a NCIS Cold Case Investigator about Dennis Bowman and his possible connection to some of these cases. They do have his DNA profile and they have been checking it against those cases where there DNA evidence is available.

There are many unsolved cases in the Virginia Beach/ Norfolk, VA area, some of which have been posted on this thread. I do not suggest that Dennis Bowman is responsible for all of them, but rather that he could be considered as a potential suspect in many of them. He is certainly not their only possible perpetrator, but he IS a known serial killer who has been convicted of two particularly gruesome and vicious murders. And he was free to move around and carry on his killings for many years. Since one of his murders was committed in Virginia Beach, it begs the question that he might have been responsible for others there as well.

Thanks Richard for the information.

Bumping this thread up.

Bowman's convictions for the 1980 murder of Kathleen Doyle and 1989 murder of Aundria Bowman are only the tip of the ice berg.

How many others were there? Who were they? And where did he hide those still missing?

I agree that he could have more victims, but it seems unlikely that he would have remained in Virginia Beach after his release from prison in 1985; he would have been drummed out of the service by that time. For victims from 1985 till 2019, it makes more sense to look for victims in Michigan, IMO. For potential victims from the late 1960s till 1981, it makes sense to look for victims from both Michigan and the Virginia Beach area since we don't have a clear timeline for him from LE and don't know when he entered the naval reserves.

The Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) was very involved in the Virginia Beach case (the Kathleen Doyle murder) so it is likely that LE in both Virginia and Michigan have his Naval Reserve record, or a summary of it.

Dennis Bowman, photo taken in 1980

Dennis Bowman is a Serial Killer, now serving sentences of Life in Prison for the murders of Kathleen O'Brien Doyle (Virginia Beach, VA 1980) and his own adopted daughter Aundria Bowman (Holland, MI 1989).

He was not caught and convicted of the first murder until 2019. It is highly likely that he began killing before 1980 and that he continued killing after 1989. If a good time line for his travels and residences could be drawn, perhaps other murders - and disappearances - could be connected to him.

Here are a few unsolved Michigan cases which others have suggested as potentially connected to Dennis Bowman:

- In 1970, Shelley Speet Mills, a 19-year-old newlywed, was stabbed to death in her apartment in Grand Rapids, 30 miles northeast of Holland. Mills’s mother, who’d driven to the city to take her daughter to lunch, found her body.

- In 1977, Deborah Polinsky, a 20-year-old Holland woman, was killed in what one newspaper called a “sex slaying.” After Polinsky failed to show up for work, a colleague found her stripped, sexually assaulted, and stabbed to death in her home, with her German shepherd standing guard over the body.

- In 1979 a violent attack was made on a 27-year-old woman who early on a Sunday morning was bound, gagged, and sexually assaulted by an intruder in her home. The perpetrator took cash before fleeing the scene, and was described as a white man between 25 and 30 years old, with sandy hair and wire-rimmed glasses. He was estimated at five-foot-six and 150 pounds. According to the young woman, her assailant was wearing a leather jacket and dark pants. Forty years later, Dennis Bowman confessed to this crime.

- In about 1989 the following incidents took place:

A 13-year-old girl was nearly pulled off a Holland street by a stranger.

A nine-year-old girl on a bike was stopped by a man who opened his car door and asked repeatedly if she wanted to get ice cream.

Two siblings, aged nine and seven, were walking near Van Raalte Elementary School when they encountered a man they later estimated to be in his thirties. The suspect, who was driving a truck and wearing blue jeans and a blue winter jacket, offered the children money, then chased them on foot when they refused to get in his vehicle. The children later described the truck as shiny and red which matches the description of the vehicle Bowman drove at the time.

Although this case has been closed with the belief by LE that one David Oudemolen was the killer, I wonder if DEnnis Bowman might have been involved or perhaps the actual killer. Debra was killed in Bowman's home town and the manner of her murder is similar to that of Kathleen O'Brien Doyle (1980).

Debra Lynn Wilson, age 30
Murdered 23 December 1987

Debra was last seen by relatives around 8 p.m. on the evening of December 23, 1987 in Zeeland, Ottawa County, MI. Her husband, Rock, who was working second shift at Sintered Metal Products in Zeeland, called her and told her he was going to a Christmas party after work. When he arrived home he found all of the lights on in the house and an open sliding door that led to the back yard. He called his father, Hardee Wilson, to help search and eventually Rock found Debra’s body fully clothed next to a trailer about 120 feet from their house at about 5:30 a.m., December 24, 1987. There were no signs of forced entry, and police said they could not determine if she had been forced or carried to the location where her body was found. Neither robbery nor sexual assault appeared to be a motive.

Ottawa County Sheriff Gary Rosema indicated in a Dec. 2016 interview that the case had been solved, that Mrs. Wilson’s killer was David Oudemolen, and that Oudemolen died before he could be charged.
