York Regional Police have released video on the 30th anniversary of the unsolved murder of Eustace Compass, who was found dead in his Vaughan home in 1990 with a gunshot wound to the head. Photo by SCREENGRAB /YORK REGIONAL POLICE/YOUTUBE

''Eustace Compass was 43 when he was found dead inside his 3 Oakdale Rd. home in Vaughan on Nov. 7, 1990. YRP’s Homicide Unit — Cold Case Section say a new video outlining his death will hopefully garner some tips from the public.''

''Officers found the garage door open and Compass naked on the bedroom floor with a gunshot wound to the head.

''Aside from his car, police also identified several other items missing from his house, including a $50 watch, $50 gold tiger eye ring, his wallet and a sterling silver fine tea set.''

''Compass was last seen around 5 p.m. on Nov. 6, 1990, at a Supercentre grocery store in Richmond Hill with a man.
“Mr. Compass was only about 5-foot-6 tall and he was seen driving in that area by a neighbour with a young, blonde male in the passenger seat of that vehicle.”

''The investigation revealed that Compass frequented Toronto gay bars and often brought young men or sex workers to his home in Vaughan. Sometimes, he would not pay sex workers for their services, according to investigators.''

BEHIND THE CRIMES: Murdered accountant's body discovered in master bedroom (yorkregion.com)
YCompositeDrawingofSuspect_Super_Portrait.jpg

''Three decades have elapsed since Eustace Compass was discovered shot dead in his Maple home.

The freelance accountant’s body was found by police on the morning of Nov. 7, 1990, sprawled naked in the upper-level master bedroom of his 2,600-square-foot residence at 3 Oakdale Road.

York Regional Police may never determine who fired a .22-calibre bullet into his head.

Compass was last seen around 5 p.m. on Nov. 6. The 43-year-old was with a young, blond man at a grocery store in Richmond Hill.

The following morning, York Regional Police were knocking on his front door.

Toronto police had identified a 1989 burgundy Chrysler LeBaron convertible, found by security at Towne & Countrye Square Mall (now Centrepoint Mall), as belonging to Compass. The vehicle had been stolen and abandoned at the mall located at Steeles Avenue and Yonge Street.''

''In addition to their grisly discovery, investigators found that some of Compass's personal belongings, including jewelry and a silver tea set, were taken from the residence, yet nothing that would be considered big-ticket was missing.''

“A robbery took place, but was that the end goal?” wonders Det. Jeffrey Evans of the York Regional Police Homicide Unit – Cold Case. “We can’t say that. Is that a reason to kill him? Maybe it was to cover up what happened.

“Maybe it was revenge for something else. Or a rip-off. Everything is a possibility. There is a lot of conjecture.”

Police learned it was common for Compass, who frequented gay bars such as Chaps and Kolby’s, to troll for young male street hustlers, promising a place to live for cheap or free sex.

“He liked to go to Toronto and meet young males that were tall, thin, blond and blue-eyed,” said Evans, who said Compass was known among downtown male street hustlers. “Did he pick up the wrong kid?”

Often short-term live-ins, usually between the ages of 17 to 23, the young men often performed chores around his meticulously maintained two-storey home in the quiet neighbourhood.''

“I think even back then people in the gay community knew who did it,” said Evans. “We definitely know a lot of people knew him, and if not by name, they knew him by his car.''

''The man from the previous day, believed to be in his 20s, was questioned by police about the shooting.

''The man is still not cleared by police.''

''Evans said one person interviewed by police, who lived with Compass for a month, had moved to Windsor the day prior to the slaying.
Tired of his company, Compass had concocted a story about having to attend a funeral in Jamaica.

''The investigation was challenging from the outset. Both parents of the victim were deceased. He was believed to be the youngest of 11 children. Siblings were scattered across Jamaica and the United Kingdom. There has been no contact with family members since soon after their brother’s death.''

“At this point, we have exhausted our DNA possibilities,” said Evans. “We’ve investigated this from central Ontario to Martha’s Vineyard.

The frustrating part is that there are people who can come forward and provide information to move the investigation along, but have chosen not to.

“Without new forensic evidence, it appears we’re at a standstill unless we get something from Joe Public.

“Somebody besides the killer knows what went on. Guaranteed.''
