The couple was flying in their privately owned Cesna 150 plane. There was obviously some emergency which caused the plane to go down, probably on land, possibly in a remote, uninhabited and swampy location.

In a thickly wooded area, the Cessna would have been ripped apart by tree branches and hit the ground in pieces with virtually no hole made in the tree canopy, thus hiding the crash from air searches.

If in a very remote area or one of rugged terrain and vegetation, hikers might not have stumbled on the crash site over the past 42 years.

It is also possible that they decided to fly over a large area of water, and went down there.

As someone mentioned in the comments to the "Diver Down" article, a direct route would have taken them right over Saginaw Bay. I'm not sure why investigators think that the plane made it to Huron-Manistee National Forest.

Tons of info from their son. He states that his father didn’t use instruments and followed maps and highways so he wouldn’t have gone over water. He had some flight hours but doesn’t sound like he was experienced. Health issues. Jean hated flying. Etc. I stopped reading.

If the plane went down over land, then it's surprising that the wreckage wasn't found. I suppose there are some very remote spots, but hunters and morel mushroom hunters cover an awful lot of ground in Michigan. I would think that just about every square yard of ground gets walked on at least once a decade if not more often.
There are plenty of inland lakes, so the plane could have gone down in one of those.

GRAND TRAVERSE COUNTY, Mich. — The Block family is searching for answers decades after their loved ones’ plane disappeared in northern Michigan.

John Block was 30 years old when his parents, John Block Senior and Jean Block, planned to fly from Detroit to Luzerne, Michigan on July 4th, 1977. Their plane never arrived at the air strip east of Grayling.

Accident report (NTSB and FAA links don't work)

YouTube videos, including an interview with their son, and a map
